    Easily my new favourrite channel you two. Stunning to see what a quality shipwright can do to a van space. I'm an engineer, dirtbike rider, car enthusiast, part time maker of anything/mechanic/wood worker/welder/fabricator and when I one day get my time to build a van I'll be going back over this build in depth for ideas. A class act; leaps an bounds beyond the majority of junk out there. Priviliged to get to watch along, thankyou both.

I build camper vans in my spare time and getting ready to start another one, Ive picked up a few ideas and want to apply some of my past skills into the next one. Anyone who does this kind of work has to have one thing above all else, patience. Looking forward to more of your videos.

    Loved the "I'm just lazy, so I'm cutting the dovetails straight off with the saw". For me that meant - I know I'll get it to work!

    I wish my local hardware store sold those hand tools; every time I'm back in Canada I make a pilgrimage to Lee Valley to pick up some more Veritas tools. What you are able to do with just a few quality tools is really great and goes to show that you don't need lots of tools to do quality work. Love the build and can't wait to see what you do with your sailboat.

      @@SailHub Ahhh, well for my photography I use the Godox brand, cheap and Chinese. For the softboxes I pay good money, but what you have already looks just fine. For seeing cuts you can buy LED headbands for hiking/biking, I use the same when I'm crafting things on my boat which also lacks light in the evening. Have fun!

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  23 дня назад

      Cheers fella, I’ve had my eye on a Godox ml100 for a while… a little under powered for the workshop though, that’s for inside the van for podcasting.
      I think we could do with a 300w as at the moment I I have to carry the dammed thing around with me. Headtorches are great, we have exposure ones from the mtb’s but they create harsh shadows which don’t help for my kind of work. I think big lights are better but they are just too costly!

    Great to see the development. If you need to raise more money to support the project, don't be afraid to have 'sail hub' mugs and keys rings at small profit. Then suggest to your audience they can get on board the support by purchasing.
    I'm following a lad 'CarlRogers' building a Sheppard's hut and he's created a fleece the subscribers can by... £100 is abit steep to me, but buying a mug/key ring etc I'm sure plenty would reach into their pockets.

    That standard of fit out should deliver a rattle proof van! It is a treat to see someone with the knowledge, skills and experience, work on detailed items like this. Interestingly it reminds me of the high level required to do something complex and intricate, and get it 100% right. Why is it that education, exams are focused on 'pass' marks of 75%? I don't employ someone to do 75% of job or pay 75% of tax etc.

    • @SailHub

      Sadly though… most people aim for a pass mark there’s days… it’s a shame really, we’re loosing what made our craft so good. Anyhow, we’re enjoying building the van and it seems like your enjoying watching it so it’s a win win here!!

      @SailHub  24 дня назад

      Yeah, me too! I’ve seen varying results on boats as a deck… but this does seem pretty sweet. They are apparently the only people in the world that can make it like this. The promises are there and if it works out it’s a no brainer for a deck! We’ve got our fingers crossed as it’s this or Kiwi Grip at present and let’s face it, the cork will look well smart in comparison, as well as being kinder on bare knees!

Probably never would have gotten anywhere if I had been trying to get to this level. I went with mostly marine stuff because... well, camper stuff is garbage. I'm using Safire, another Finnish manufacturer's diesel stove which the local chandlery seems to think is even better than the Wallas, very pleased with it so far.

    With plywood, would a finger joint been better? Was the choice of the blind dovetail to hide the joint?

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  24 дня назад

      Yeah, that’s the point of the blind dovetail, as to not spoil the face edge and grain matching on the front panel.
      As bot box joints. They would work yeah, but they have nowhere near the strength of a dovetail and of course, I really don’t like to spend my days machining!

  • @TARWCreations
    @TARWCreations 16 дней назад +1

    When I was doing carpentry in college they had us doing dovetails on plywood and horrible pine off cuts.
    It’s disgusting to do fine woodworking with but great for practicing…. If you can get a tidy fit on a horrible piece of wood, doing the job on a quality solid piece later is easy-er

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  16 дней назад +1

      Yeah, I can see it being a good way to learn? Mind you you don’t really learn much about pairing end grain with ply. Probably pine is what I would recommend for practice.

    • @TARWCreations
      @TARWCreations 16 дней назад +1

      @ 100% agree. The problem with college budgets it’s they have to take what they can get.
      I do think using less than suitable wood to practice on is good for dovetails. Not just for working the wood but how the right tool gets the job done. Had to watch too many students fails because their chisel wasn’t sharp and would just destroy projects

    Did you say you are building this van with basic hand tools available at a hardware store? Lol right. Nothing like setting expectations. You might want to mention your hand tools are top level cabinetry tools, many requiring years of experience just to sharpen, let alone use. Just messing with you, love the skill level. The galley and curved bulkhead are amazing.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  24 дня назад +1

      Haha! Thanks mate, mind you you can buy it all from a hardware store and it really doesn’t need to be fancy. I think fancy is great if your using them all of the time. But otherwise it’s just not needed.

    • @34136TS

      Here’s one for ya, what did I make it from?!

    • @scottspropertyservices6877
      @scottspropertyservices6877 24 дня назад

      @ hmm, my first thought was the obvious choice of solid walnut but how you just worded that im now thinking it must be something different like the corian offcut from the sink cutout.
      But you had 2 holes for 2 cutting boards…So maybe it’s a trick question & you’v used 2 different materials for different tasks🧐
      Would be nice if one fit the sink recess perfectly so it stays a flush benchtop for when the sinks not in use.
      I doubt you picked up a 2pack from Aldi 😂
      Final answer - 1 walnut & 1 corian🤞🏼

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  24 дня назад

      @scottspropertyservices6877 haha! Some great thoughts going on there.
      Sadly no inset chopping board, I’ve had that on the last two boats and wanted east access to the sinks for our home.
      So, both are controlled by one button, nope not corian or walnut but it was turned on a woodwork lathe!
