The 138's better separation and clearer less " muddy" bass/ mid range.

Ok, so I wouldn't be here if I wasn't actively comparing the 2 speaker sets... so thank you for this seriously in depth comparison that doesn't have someone telling me how they think sound, just lets me make my decision for me, so thank you! I'm thinkin the highs are a lil more crisp and defined in the 1380s but there's just something about the slightly wider soundstage of the 1280s that are pushing me that way. Maybe it's just the way my speakers are portraying them, but that being said, it also made me appreciate the speakers I'm using haha The ridiculous non-replaceable 3.5mm cord on my speakers is making a stuuuupid buzzing noise and it's time for an upgrade!

1280 model has "DBS" (newer) version. The new DBS updated version is $10 more with slight improvements (power, sub out, minimalized/updated remote). Both 1280 versions have front bass port thats in the middle/top, but the 1380db has a front bass port thats on the bottom (other studio monitors that have front bottom bass ports are Kali, Presonus, KRK, Focal and others). Im not sure which is better honestly, to have it on the bottom or the middle/top.

Definitely; fullness, depth, balance, richness is better on edifier 1280dbs. Speakers 1380, in my opinion, are rather dry and deaf, they have less than the middle, the emphasis is on the top, although they also play well, a matter of taste. For an amateur.

Overall the 1380 comes closer to the original but I think 1280 has a tighter bass. Perhaps stuffing the 1380 bassport might help. It's a shame the bass port is not on the same height. Lowering the mic(s) might sound different in favor of the 1380. I ordered the 1380 because they were cheaper at that time. Haven't received them yet.

MR4 is more balanced, 1380 sounds slightly clearer but also slightly less bass/depth? than 1280.
