Vanessa's first appearance isn't actually in "Dude, we're getting the band back together" but in "The Magnificent Few" as a small, almost non-speaking part in Doofenshmirtz's subplot. He claims he hired her as his lab assistant, but in the end it's revealed that it was "bring your daughter to work" day.

ok i am such a sucker for musical episodes when i saw you made this video and had community and clone high in the thumbnail i was like YES. YES . OH MY GOD
and the fact that you covered once more with feeling (the buffy episode) in it as well made me SO happy because i'm the biggest buffy fan in the world legitimately. so i am going to talk about buffy in your comment section i apologize in advance
so first of all to answer your question about their ages, in s6 they're all out of high school. they graduate in s3, s4 is in college, s5 is when buffy's sister dawn is introduced and it's all about buffy growing up, and s6 is the incredibly terribly sad and mentally taxing season which is why OMWF is so full of intense plot and drama.
while this definitely was a joss whedon passion project and that's very obvious, i personally love that it's a plot-heavy episode that's full of music cause if they tried to move all of this plot WITHOUT songs..... i would be bored out of my mind, but again i am a sucker for musical episodes. anyways moving on
it's a really rough episode that isn't fun in the way that most musical episodes are, so if you aren't invested in the show then it's not for everyone. (tbh, that could be said about all of s6 though)
the plot of the *whole season* is expanded on and moved forward through song - tara and willow's relationship is a BIG part of s6, giles also leaves this season which is what he sings about in this episode, anya and xander sing about their fears regarding marriage (which... their marriage fails btw it's all like foreshadowing), and don't even get me started on buffy and spike
i do really enjoy this episode, but you pretty much NEED the context of the previous 5 seasons to enjoy it as much as i do and frankly i do not blame you for not getting through the entire show LMAO. (especially s4... worst season probably of the whole show other than s7)
anyways this video has been incredibly entertaining and i always love being given a chance to talk about buffy the vampire slayer so thank you for that

it IS very important but it's also a pretty big bummer of an episode (esp for a musical episode) so i understand why you didn't like it much originally LMAO
i can't imagine going from s2 where buffy and spike hate each other to s6 JSGHDH that'd throw me for a loop

I'm sure the comments have yelled this at you enough already but the Buffy musical episode is like... universally beloved. The fact that it is plot driven and not just a fun sideplot episode is what makes it so great. It's the perfect culmination of all the stories in the show and the fact that they are all miserable is good, actually.
You have a point about the horny thing tho

    • @RariettyC
      @RariettyC 3 месяца назад +1

Even as someone who hasn't watched any of Buffy the musical episode being directly tied to character development is why I admire it, even from afar. It's also why the best Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Community musical episodes are good; so many musical episodes feel like one-off jokes meant to be consumed without any context, but the point of any musical is to convey plot development through meaningful song.
You can write a one-shot single episode plot that works as a musical that anyone can understand if that's the only episode they see, and that's fine, but it feels like a much more interesting use of both the TV and musical mediums to use your musical episode to actually develop and conclude plot threads from previous episodes. The way that musical episodes enable characters who have been limited by either dialogue or silence for hours of story up until this point to finally be able to directly express their emotions in a climactic way is a benefit that TV shows have over either movies or stage musicals.

NO, NOT THAT HEATHERS EP. As a devoted fan of both the movie and musical, I have never hated a tv show more in my life.
Crazy Ex Girlfriend is my favourite musical show of a time. The charactrer and songs from Greg is my all time favourite especially Hey, West Covinia and Shitshow.
I do love American Dad more than Family Guy. Roger is my favourite asshole. The trapped in the closet parody by Steve is so good.
Always Sunny. The Nightman Cometh, I know all of the lyrics 🤣 thats how much I love this show and episode.

As someone who did choir for years and one musical in middle school and will watch almost show that seems mildly entertaining to me several times over I didn't realize how much I needed this video. And idk why but it struck me how good it is when u set up the intro for American Dad. I have unfortunately seen every Seth MacFarlane show at least 3 times and his musical talent isn't acknowledged as much as it should be!! And to reference Mean Girls the Musical like god I probably listen to a song from that soundtrack at least once a day. All this to say musicals are just fun songs that tell spell out a story and have to be preformed so that everyone can fully understand and appreciate them, and I feel like most are but a majority of the common audience for these shows don't care. Musicals get too much hate anyway none of what I said made any sense thank you for making this video xo

Don't know if you've seen it, but you've mentioned liking modern cartoons so I'll recommend it. Tangled the Series is a continuation from the movie that is done so well with some truly fantastic songs that I can't recommend enough. I think most of the premier/midseason/season finales have enough songs have enough songs to qualify. It just truly has some fantastic songs, big fan of Ready As I'll Ever Be and Nothing Left to Loose are the biggest highlights for me. It's defiantly a show simular to something like a Phinease and Ferb or Steven Universe in the sense that music is highly present but not always being a straight up musical tv show. Loved the list in general, even if I had not seen many of the show. You are highly engaging to watch. (I also loved the My Babysitters a Vampire video, I loved that show as a kid. I love a found family dynamic that the show had particularly in season 2)

I think I have one (of many, I’m sure) answer(s) to your, ‘I don’t exactly know why I like this so much/find this so impactful from a logistical standpoint, I just do,’ conundrum.
As a former theater kid (and now proud owner of a musical theater degree), the best way I’ve heard anyone describe why people tend to find music/musicals so impactful was explained thusly by a few professors of mine, and it’s really stuck with me: when it comes to musicals, character/emotional motivation to break into song/dance works like this, if you can’t find the words to explain your emotions via dialogue, you sing them, and if the emotions are too overwhelming to even open your mouth, then you express them with dance. (I’m lengthening that to try and explain what they meant in a bit more depth, the actual phrase was really more like, “if you can’t say it, sing it, and if you can’t sing it, dance it” but I didn’t want to just assume that would totally make sense to anyone and everyone without the context of, like, knowing my professors, idk.)

remember you is by far the best episode of modern television, and by far in animation. I remember when I first watched it, and from that point on I was addicted to the show. I had liked the show previous to watching that episode, but not to this level. Essentially the same thing you said is what I felt. That episode is just such a gut grinder. At the time I was too young to really grasp the underlying metaphor for dementia, but I still comprehended the gravity of the situation. This was also the episode which made me look forward to any episode with Marceline and Simon, I was desperate for any more information about them, or some sort if catharsis to their relationship, and overall it made me care so much more about the lore of the show. I don't know if I can even put into words how much this episode effected my childhood, but anytime I hear the song I cry, maybe not so much anymore, but at the bare minimum a few hot tears.

I think the zeitgeist nostalgic era is catching up me. Finally some early 10s and late 00s rep. I'm glad to have grown up with Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Phineas and Ferb. Their musical episodes were ingrained into my psych, and I can remember Phineas and Ferb being brought up and referenced so often in elementary and middle school. My best friend and I were huge Adventure Time fans, down to owning franchise video games and playing the Card Wars app. The show's seemingly endless universe of creativity was already my first major influence to start writing fictional stories in my notebooks and drawing illustrations to go along with them, but unraveling the more emotional narratives from season 3 onward was the first time I could remember getting viscerally emotional at a TV show. That song "I Remember You" was the precise point where I can remember that level of emotional impact that I hadn't fully understood but would linger in my mind forever.

I loved adventure time when it was coming out. But tbh I Remember You is still the only episode i properly remember.

The GALL of showing footage from Influenza the Musical yet not using it. I cannot believe it.
Shia being a bad singer adds to the charm.

came from this year's musical episode awards, figured i would drop my own favorite down here too since everyone else has lol
it's gotta be wander over yonder's "my fair hatey" for me
there's just so much to love about it- they skip the regular intro in favor of a whole musical-esque number (and i personally think jack mcbrayer is a fabulous singer, so bonus points) and within the context of the episode, and the rest of that season as a whole, the music is almost ironically cheerful in comparison to what the plot actually is. at one point, clean rips of all the music was available on the composer's soundcloud, andy bean. pretty sure it still is, but i downloaded the album so i havent actually looked

Been watching the old legend of zelda cartoon, i think on amazon prime. And for whatever reason, every epsiode opens with the super show theme, amd they all end with the live action "do the Mario!" bit and it just cracks me up every time

Absolute disrespect to the Buffy episode 😤 I honestly loved how the singing forced characters to voice things they wouldn't have and moved the arcs along and I listen to the soundtrack religiously in lieu of rewatching a hundred seasons of drama

I know it doesn't fit the rules, but Psych: The Musical is my all time musical "episode". I know next to nothing about actual musical productions, and my bias for Psych may be speaking here, but the episode was really funny and had great songs in my opinion. "Santa Barbara Skies" and "I've Heard it Both Ways" are great, but "You Can't Do This!" has been on my daily rotation since I first saw the episode.
Anyway, you've actually convinced me to try American Dad after avoiding it all these years. Good video!

I don't really hate the superhero origin episode. I think troy said it best with. "I think it's cool that we are all connected even if it's in bad ways" And the fact that they stay together is a testament to their friendship and found family. Like yeah, they put each other through some shit but they still got something better out of it together. And I like how it reframes the question of whether or not it was worth it in the end knowing how much they fought before in the early seasons when they felt dating each other had some strain to it.
