19:56 It's rare that I see people actually make it to this particular crash, which is my favorite one. It's something you always had in the back of your mind as a kid; what if the Lethal Lava Land painting became real? Then B3313 comes along and throws you a callback curveball to your childhood fear. It's merely startling as an adult, but has that aftershock of realizing it finally became true.
It's a sort of a jumpscare that is truly done right, basing itself on a subconscious tension that may have been built up during your childhood. It will get you good but you can't help but to admire the effectiveness of it afterwards. God, there's so much this ROM hack just does so right it feels unreal.
@Jullan-M another interesting aspect of it is that it's tied to your system clock. It only spawns in that version of the Vanilla Basement that you can only reach at night.
I'm glad you're using save states. So many people will get a romhack for a game they have never played and complain about difficulty when the difficulty is often just "You've seen the base game, played around, and understand how to do all the basic moves but not 100%" and then say romhacks are too hard. Some people really struggle with this. Save States help you learn and practice mechanics faster as opposed to having to run back to try again and again. Provided you don't just try to brute force things by using a Save State, holding right, and load every time you mess up.
I've noticed this, the tendency to find the repeating all the parts in-between because you messed up on one part instead of just getting back into the action is huge. It was the difference between completing and shelving a game in my experience.
19:11 When you saw Mario's apparition my heart also skipped a beat, but not for the same reason. You see, that castle is one of the places I know by heart, like how to get there, what places lead out of it. But when I saw the basement area, that showed that I really can't even begin to have a grasp on the game, THAT, frightened me to my core.
19:10 actually scared me, I was honestly expecting the game to crash, the only validation of that not being the case being the camera shaking violently, it was both awkwardly comfort inspiring and troubling, as if the game itself is warning you not to interact with it, like that thing isn't one of the many minions spat out by the game in an attempt to thwart you, but an unknown third party that the game fears and is trying its best not to directly tell you to refrain from making yourself known to it.
I do love the extra perspective you have of not knowing much about vanilla SM64. Not only does this game force you to go about it as you would as a kid, but you're also experiencing the game for the first time through this mod
39:25 This reminds of how back in the day I would play this nuclear plant simulator shareware game, I had no idea what I was doing since I didn't have even the most basic grasp of the English language, but I got to the point where I didn't cause a catastrophical disaster 5 seconds into the game.
It's really interesting seeing someone who's never played SM64 play B3313 but I think it would be even more interesting to see you play normal Mario 64 afterwards and see how different it is
Also, you don't need all the stars to get the ending, I won't spoil what it is though but I will say that in case the number of stars "demotivates" you.
What i love about this series is how when the most joyfull, cozy and relaxing music starts playing on the background, librarian is just "I can feel my soul exiting my body as we speak" i hope one day we can see you "beat" this rom hack!!
You mentioned the Box behaving like the Grasshopper but as if the model was missing. In the normal game, Grasshoppers actually dont exist and those Boxes are the only things that bounce you when you grab them
47:12 Now that you mention it, this hack really does make the player feel quite unimportant. There's so many enemies and things roaming around, that the player becomes this little spec in comparison; Makes you feel like you're no more important than anything else you see around. Unlike other games, where you are the main focus.
This is absolutely my favorite series of yours in a long time! you do this game justice beyond measure, and your takes and exploration of it are better than anyone else's i've seen. i feel like, in a weird way, you're the target audience for appreciating it. please keep it up, i'd love more of this series
please please please do more of this series! There are 450 stars to get, you have so much more progress to make! Little points to understand: 1. if the painting ripples when you enter, it will spit you back out when you get a star, if it doesn't ripple, it will send you to the dark hallway. 2. you can be alow more mobile if you use 2 key movements. First of all is the longjump, which you can do by crouching while running and immediately jumping while sliding. Second is the side flip, which you can do by running away from what you want to jump towards, pulling back on the analogue stick and jumping. I really want to see more of you playing this!
You don't have to ground-pound ghosts, you just have to jump on them. But you can't hurt them if they're transparent, just turn around and wait for them to come to you, then jump. Also learning how to long-jump and side-flip will make things easier for you
I like how the librarian is gradually getting better at mario 64, some day if when you finish the hack, i need to see your reaction to the vanilla game, its going to feel pretty... Normal in comparion to this complex, liminal, living sistem
Hey Librarian I've rly been enjoying the series, seeing u bump into paintings that lead nowhere remind me of playing the game when i was little and smashing into every painting in the castle hoping to find a secret new world. On another note, some of your issues with movement could be solved with long jumps, back flips, and side flips! the first two require interaction with the A and Z buttons. The third requires u to quickly change direction, opposite to where you were sprinting, then pressing the A button while in that transitional animation. I know this mod locks some of those moves behind progression, but I'd recommend giving them a shot anyway :)
thankfully all but 2 red stars are linked to actual bosses in B3313 and not just creepy event areas like the forest or mario corridor, good luck finding all 13!
6:12 not to be that guy but "there's, like, really 'long jumps' in this game that I have no idea how it expects you to make" is actually really unintentionally funny given that Long Jumps are literally the mechanic needed for those times (EDIT 1: also using kicks in mid-air to get a bit of hang-time and extra control) EDIT 2: on a related note I'm really glad you figured out how to kill ghosts, at least kind of, that'll stop you from ever missing Boo-related progress! Nice one
39:20 "Did you ever get that as a kid?" I literally thought of that the other day, I remember back when I was like 6-7 I would look at all the options in the RTS games I was playing then (and now) and it seemed so complicated like I was trying to learn how to fly an F-16 or do rocket science or something. Looking at the UI and seeing all the things you can do, all the stuff you can build, all the units you can command, it was an overload of options!

I’ve been binge-watching your videos because I got sick over Spring Break while I’m home from college and I’ve been bedridden all week. Maybe I’ll see a B3313 #4 before I go back? In any case I really enjoy your videos 🙏🏽
Learning and utilising Mario’s move set is key when it comes to making difficult jumps. I recommend that you get used to using the long jump. Not just for platforming, but also for getting around quickly.
Okay uuuuh, i find it unlikely that you'll read this but fun fact about that weird fire creature thing that crashed your game, That painting exists in the original game and is infamous for having that creature without it existing in-game. So it's VERY unexpected and sorta cool for it to just pop up there.
47:13 I’d argue a bit of the opposite. There *are* no entities, or at least none left. This world feels incomprehensibly vast and yet dead. All of the things attacking you are shadowed out figures, ghosts! The mere echoes of wanderers long reclaimed by the maze like growths of this tumorous castle
In the final episode of this series you should just look at a map of the castle in this romhack you’ll feel better about getting lost so often trust me
That only works once you've collected a red star. But for the reeeally long jumps, you want to triple jump, since in this game it causes you to spin jump and glide really far
A tip: Utilize the movement abilities. Z + A = Backflip Z + A while running = Longjump Press B while running to do a dive, it does damage to enemies while also makes you move faster than running. Press A when you land the dive to jump back to the running state. Hold A and press B to do a speedkick, works like a normal kick but you can do it on the ground. Works great to get up slippy slopes. Run in a direction and change to the opposite direction to make mario slide, press A during that slide animation to do a sideflip. Jump 3 times in a row to do a big jump and slowly fall downwards. Wallkicks, jump into a wall and press jump again Z + B = Roll forward in high velocity As in all platformers, the longer you hold jump the higher you jump.
Press LT then a in quick succession and you'll long jump, you're welcome, oh also you can press A and then X while moving forward to jump dive (I am using an Xbox controller as well)
you can perform a "long jump" by holding the trigger buttons on your PS3 controller and pressing A while moving forward. I highly recommend to find a list or a video explaining all of Mario's moves in this game as well as looking more into the history of Mario 64 and to learn how this romhack came to be and the vibes it represents
in 32:02 when you go to the plexal upstairs and enter that painting there is a chance you get warped to a level called "forgotten falls" instead of "pleasant, pleasant falls"
Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I believe green coins heal you more than regular coins do Edit: If you want to get the Vanish Cap, go through the castle’s side entrance (next to the waterfall) and go straight towards the middle double doors. There’s a painting behind them that’ll randomly take you to one of two Vanish Cap courses
To activate the blue item boxes, you must find the blue switch that is conteined within a a level thats bellow the castle´s bridge. Or at least thats where I found it.
I feel like you need to know about the longjump. It is preformed just like using the longjump module in Half-Life 1; you crouch while running and then jump. This jump sends you further forward and doesn't require as much space to wind up. You could've used it in the green switch cave.
I fell asleep during this video last night and im having a super hard time figuring out where i was last night🤣 as if this hack wasn't already confusing
Fun Fact: theres a secret level known as Bowser in the Cold Heights that gets unlocked if you get to the last level after collecting less than 13 of those red stars
