  • www.cau.edu - The CAU Philharmonic Society opened the 70th @NBA All-Star Game with an original rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” arranged by Dr. Roland Carter and directed by Dr. Curtis Powell. This performance, set at Harkness Hall on Clark Atlanta University's historic campus, aired on TNT, on March 7, 2021.
Commonly known as the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was originally penned by Atlanta University alumnus James Weldon Johnson AU’1894 and set to music by his brother J. Rosamond Johnson. It was first performed as a song in 1900 for President’s Day. The NAACP adopted it as the Black National Anthem in 1930.
