It is truly something special when an artist and an author are brought together to create an iconic run of books. Ballard was fortunate to have two amazing runs with Penguin and Panther.
Truly a golden era. I love that they made such a special effort for Ballard covers. I wonder how many readers got lured in by that stunning Crash cover and then got bamboozled by the bonkers surreal narrative.
VERY interesting episode. I lust for copies with the Pelham covers. His rendition on the cover of the first mag was for one of Dicks printings of "Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch"? Might be wrong on that one. Didn't he also do an iconic cover for Bester's "Tyger, Tyger"? Man, I covet that one as well. A shout to Stephen Andrews for turning me on to your channel! Cheers
Nice! Your right, it was a PKD cover. I have an almost complete collection of Pelhsm and Aldridge in vintage Penguins. Both have dedicated videos coming soon. Stephen is a renowned Ballard expert🙂
Fantastic. I used to buy SFM. Great interviews with writers like Ballard and Edmund Cooper. Perfect marriage of art and SF. Pelham one of my favourite SF artists.
Lovely … my teen years right there. Collecting these in Australia, some of the early penguins had an Australian ‘edition’ - the Aldridge Wind From Nowhere at least has ‘65c’ printed on the cover in place of 3/6. Guessing the Aust printings are rarer and more collectible?
Thanks Kenny, they truly are a joyous sight to behold. Pelham is a real favourite, I'm looking forward to getting his other work for Penguin pulled together for an overview🙂
super set of JGB Penguins & Panthers Jules ! did you buy them new or from fairs/dealers ? prices are certainly pretty hot for these on ABE & eBay for sure ! Ps. must admit i do like that Concrete Island cover tho..........
Thanks my friend. I had almost all the Penguins anyway. I bought the box set and one other Pelham online. Very tough to find in nice condition. I have doubles of virtually all the Penguins ones at present, sadly no spare Panther ones. These are red hot, understandably so👍🙂
Simply stunning jackets for the ultimate New Wave SF writer.
Absolutely Steve👍🙂

He was indeed. Certainly in the mid 70's he was really being spoilt by both publishers👍
What an amazing collection of books. Thank you for introducing them to us.
Thanks Sherri🙂

The covers were definitely part of their charm but the content certainly lives up to the promise of what might lie within. A bit of a rarity.
@@JulesBurt True. Ballard was a very special writer, and clearly the publishers made a special effort on his books.
These covers are so frameable ! Fantastic 🎉
They are really terrific🙂
Ballard is one of my favourites, the stories told combined with some of the best cover art around.
Indeed, a perfect combination. I still have plenty I've not read but when I do I really savour them🙂
The bomb on the cover of Terminal Beach is Fat Man the plutonium bomb dropped on Nagasaki.
Very nice collection & some iconic cover art.
Ah yes, thanks my friend. 👍
Nice biographical notes and a great part of your collection.
Thanks Bob!

SFM is a terrific magazine, really outstanding way to showcase artwork. Filled with nostalgia🙂

Thanks Peter, yes, those Australian variants would definitely be classed as more collectible and scarcer today. Nice.
Delicious array, thanks for sharing
My pleasure 🙂
Hi Jules. Like most other SF collectors I have a few Ballards but it's great to see them all in one place, especially the Pelham covers. Great video.
Thanks Kenny, they truly are a joyous sight to behold. Pelham is a real favourite, I'm looking forward to getting his other work for Penguin pulled together for an overview🙂
I still lsugh when i read about ballards atrocity exhibition in ellisons dangerous visions and cronenbergs crash is a great film
Ah yes, highly controversial 🙂

That cover of Science Fiction Monthly, I like how the painting of what looks like a damaged craft also looks like a clown's face.
That's true, it's a great one.
