Enjoyed this video. In my view, you are preserving the book for future generations. You have mitigated against deteration the best way you know how. 10/10
What is the best way to repair a dust jacket, in particular split along the flap. That split is still a problem with a jacket protector. It's a job I've put off for a long time, but wondered where to start with it.
Great video Jules. I totally agree with you regarding the repair... a book's condition doesn't improve with age, it's only going to get worse, so doing a sensitive repair is the sensible thing. For a sub £100 book why not? Ultimately of course it's your book and you can do with it as you see fit. You definitely should invest in a metal ruler and a cutting mat, they make things much easier. You can cut against the metal ruler which stops the blade from wandering away from the edge and the cutting mat of course gives the knife something to bite into. And it has ruler marks on it to give you perfect right angles. But everyone has their own style so it's what works for you. Thanks for showing us your excellent handiwork and also leaving "version 1" of the spine in the video... Trying to print things an exact size on domestic printers is a painful process!
Thanks my friend. All great points. I'll definitely pick up a mat and metal ruler at the next opportunity. I don't really repair that many books, maybe one. Or two a year like this at most. I try to buy in nice condition but when it's a rarity, any condition will do for now👍
also make sure the blade is sharp, they dull and when it comes to sensitive work that slight difference in the blade can ends with a bad finish. I personally just replace the blades every so often. Luckily it is easy to do and they are not too expensive.

Agreed, thanks so much 🙂👍
Interesting work Jules, certainly smartens the book up !
I think so my friend 👍

A closed tear could be pieced together from the reverse but tbh, I would be hesitant to try it at all and just leave in a plastic cover.

Nice repair Jules! I reckon you did the right thing. Might I recommend you to get a sharper razor and a steel ruler. Might make things easier😁
Good advise, I've been messing to get both for ages🙂
