Attack on Titan is set in a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by enormous walls due to the Titans, gigantic humanoid beings who devour humans. The story follows the adventures of Eren Jaeger and his childhood friends Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert, whose lives are changed forever after a Colossal Titan breaches the wall of their home town. Vowing revenge and to reclaim the world from the Titans, Eren and his friends join the Scout Regiment, an elite group of soldiers who fight Titans.

just so you guys know everything will be explained eventually it will just take some time and every scene is important even tho it might not seem that importent that is one of the reasons why this show is highly praised.

man i really hope. I was spoiled on almost the entirety of season 4 by pretentious manga readers :/ at least it's less likely for them since they're watching after it ended (so there's less hype and spoilers flying around idk)
You guys will have to adjust to some Anime tropes. The moment when Sasha went crazy for the food was just an exaggeration of just how tired and hungry she was.
Tbh it’s weird how they use so many effects and over the top things in episode 3…… we never see them again lol
I think they intentionally did this for a couple reasons which I won’t mention because of spoilers. I’m only imagining they threw in the tropes to make people believe that this is just another typical anime until… it isn’t. Lol
Yup the dramatic line movement to emphasize yelling too. Beginning of s1 is much more tropey

Jean wiped his "trust in others" on Conny's shirt according to what the subtitles say but:
Basically, he complimented Mikasa's hair, then a few seconds later sees Eren, the guy who slapped his hand away instead of giving him a handshake, tell Mikasa to cut her hair
So he's wiping off Eren's high five :P

It mostly correct, but it feels unusual, abberant even.
But I've seen in a lot of translations that he says something like "his dignity" or whatever

I said this before. "To be continued" will be the most frustrating phrase. Almost every episode it a cliffhanger.
Attack on titan was written (and drawn) by one man so the show doesn't have writers. They just adapt the manga (Japanese comic book) into animation. This is the case with most anime shows.

One important thing to point out, if before the ending there is no "To be continued.." screen, that means there is a post credit scene. So keep that in mind. Loving your reaction so far!!

The inner monologue is something many newbies find annoying at some point about anime since they find it to get in the way of things. Beyond the topic of whether it's good or bad, it's good to know that most anime, including Attack on Titan, is ADAPTED from a comic/manga. Thought-bubbles are regularly used and so the anime-version adapts them as well.
Ooooh, I just realized why movies are ackward sometimes. They never have inner thoughts scenes and silence can be interpreted in 100 ways if the movie doesn't nail the acting and atmosphere in those moments... For some reason this never registered to me until I read this comment. Thanks for the epiphany ❤
I had actually never thought of it as weird to see the character's inner thoughts. I used to read a lot when I was younger and you see character's inner thoughts all the time reading so I wonder if that's why it's never struck me as odd
Yeah, some people are put off by the inner dialogue because they aren't used to it. I believe most Western movies don't have any inner dialogue. Take Breaking Bad for example. I genuinely can't remember a single inner dialogue, which sometimes forces me to guess what the main character is thinking in many scenes based solely on his facial expressions, gestures, or just his silence.
31:22 what made me fall in love with sasha, her quick reflexes are unmatched
The basic makeup of civilization is that it's protected by three walls, with the higher-class people living on the interior. Along each of the walls, at each cardinal direction, there is a town built around the gate on the exterior that is also walled off.
So basically every gate on the wall that leads towards the interior is essentially a double gate. There is an exterior gate which leads into the town and then there is an interior gate that leads to the next inner wall. Exterior gate --> Town --> Interior gate.
The show doesn't do a particularly good job at showing the size of these walls, but they are absolutely huge. The outer wall, Maria, is 100km away from the inner wall, Rose. Rose is 130km away from the center wall, Sina. And Sine is 250km in diameter. Meaning the entire diameter of these walls is 710km (441miles)!
To put that in perspective, if you placed them in Europe, the wall diameter would be almost as long as the entire length of Italy.
These episodes take place in Trost, the southern town along the edge of wall Rose. Which is 100km north of the town of Shiganshina, which is Eren's home town that was destroyed in the first episode.
Yeah, this is the information they show in between episodes. People who have time and opportunity should pause to read all the little bits of information. The world building is fascinating!

the subs are off a bit on whatever site your watching from. When Jean was wiping his hand on Connie's back he was wiping his trust off his hand, because he just smacked Eren's hand and felt betrayed since he told Mikasa to cut her hair. Not building trust.
I noticed a few things were off but wasn't that big of a deal but had to pause it when I noticed they misspelled Commander Erwin and had Commander Elvin instead lol.

I think it's good for ou guys to keep track of which walls have been broken so far as it's important to the story. As you know there's 3 walls but there are small round half circle towns that protude from each wall designed to lure titans. in the first episode, the town shigansina where they're from is one of those smaller towns. shiganshina was destroyed, then the titan that ran through the gate that led to wall maria, so they lost one of the smaller towns on the edge AND all of wall maria and humanity retreated to the second wall, rose. in this episode, the collosal titan just kicked the gate to trost, similar to shiganshina a smaller town on the edge of wall rose, wall rose is in danger here which is VITAL as the rest of humanity cannot squeeze into wall sina, the inner wall.
When this was aired in Japan, it's usually interrupted by commercials in half. So the short info screen is for that. I recommend pausing during it to absorb the info, it's pretty interesting.

Ah yes, you have quickly learned this show is king of the "AWH COME ON" cliff hangers. At least you guys can watch it all together. The emotional turmoil of waiting years for the cliff hangers took equivalent years off my life
It's so interesting looking at this from the beginning knowing what's to come later. The writing in this show is seriously brilliant. Won't spoil it for you guys obviously but the little details this show includes and how they tie together throughout the whole show is so cool. Can't wait to rewatch this masterpiece with y'all :D

I love how the guys were so invested with Eren and his development, cheering for him when he managed to stay still with the training gear and such.
They were just really enjoying the light hearted moments and then all of a sudden boom! The big ass titan appeared and broke the wall again.
"Is this really happening?!" is really a mood because that's what I said when I first watched this episode years ago.

I know many people (not saying you guys of course!), that feel anime is a thing for younger people, for kids. I love how anime like AoT just shattered those notions within the first episode.
Also I saw a quick sub title mishap, perhaps you guys already know, but they introduced the Survey Corps real quick. The commander's name is actually Erwin, whereas the subtitles named him Elfin.

Every time I watch someone new watch this show I always warn them about the MENACE and true villain of this whole series....the to be continued screen.
In all seriousness This show's community is pretty good about not spoiling and down voting anything that is a spoiler, so I'd say either don't read the comments or don't read them shortly after a video goes up, but this show is good enough that us fans derive a TON of pleasure from watching people react to it, it's the closest we can get to the feeling of the first watch, you're well on your way now though, hope y'all enjoy the series
No they're not. This community is fucking trash. Well, maybe small minority of the community but I see SO many spoilery comments. They hype up episodes, explain every fucking thing the reactors miss or forget, correct them if they misunderstand something (EVERYONE MISUNDERSTANDS STUFF BUT THE SHOW WILL EVENTUALLY EXPLAIN FURTHER), asks very specific questions about the show, put timestamps to very normal looking scenes on first watch, tell them to pay attention to something, and a lot more. All these comments contains hints, clues, spoilery elements, and is just completely unnecessary.
Having mods are good but some mods are ass and still let through comments with "hints" (i still call them spoilers) about the show. Why can't people just say nothing about the show. Literally anything about the show can be a spoiler. Even the show itself already spoils things. This may not apply to most reactors since they might not think much about the comments and gloss over them but people like filmbuff (another aot reactor) will absolutely get spoiled even by comments that have VERY subtle "hints". That man analyzes everything. If you don't know him, I highly recommend you check out his reactions. His discussions get longer the more episodes he watches and he catches literally everything in the show. Your suggestion about them not reading comments is what I believe is the best, but that's not possible since they want to interact with viewers.

I'm glad you guys are covering this anime! I love this series and its a great horror + adventure/ growing up in hard times story.
As a side note, I loved the fact you guys picked up in the last watch video that not many western medias would outright say "because of the food shortage, they sent the people to die". I find the media in North America to be controlled a lot more than in European and Asian countries. The Dubbed version of this series used to be on American TV (before Streaming sites) but was discontinued due to a content warning (I assume either blood and gore, or that it may have been on a younger audience's channel).
Again, glad you are covering this series, I'm excited to see how you all continue to react to this great (slightly confusing maybe) story, with all it's twists and turns :) Happy watching!!

Sasha's food scenes are one of my favorite things in the anime. That scene of her showing them the meat she stole was so great. I'm fairly new to animes but I've seen foodie girls in several already.

They were watching on Hulu for the first couple of episodes but don’t worry, now they’re watching on Crunchyroll

I have seen this show like 10-15 times now i swear, and i am left speechless from the foreshadowing everytime...
This is going to be such a exciting and equally painful reaction series because I just want you guys to binge it all right away! Even though I know what happens I CANNOT wait to see your reactions! I love Answers reaction in particular, you can tell hes really getting into it :D
You are asking all the right questions and picking up the clues. Just be prepared for some confusion, some of these are questions we held for a full decade. But its such an impactful story, one I know so many of us grew up with. And honestly, just a brilliant choice for your first anime series. I just know you guys are going to love it!
