Rock Climber Finds Financial Freedom in a Tiny House

  • In 2012, Art completed his 117 square foot tiny house on wheels constructed with SIPs (structurally insulated panels) and reclaimed cypress siding. Currently, Art has his tiny home parked in Lafayette, Louisiana. We visited him this past February and he showed us a wild time!
    Art’s Louisiana based tiny home is wonderfully minimal, uncluttered and he works hard to keep it that way. He resisted building any extra storage or shelving, knowing that if he creates the storage space, he will fill it. Using a “less is more” philosophy,
    Art is proud of his minimal belongings: he owns three cups (handmade by his daughter) and a very limited wardrobe.

    One of the best I've seen so far. I love the minimalist aspect, the countertop and the shoji paper door. But I still don't understand why people don't put dormers in the loft - without them, it looks like a coffin :s

    For me, the ideas in ruclips.net/user/postUgkxAfqpMLyFn37qcqUl0FAzqkkycQeXqrhP Plans were a starting point for building different sheds . Ryan gives ideas that allow an individual to draw nicest conclusions into the design and building of his or her own shed.

    If you find yourself in the Northwest (Central Washington)....and needing a place to park... we have a tiny house community we are building. We are also capable of assisting people to build their own tiny homes both trailer mounted or cargo box style. We have nearly all of the construction tools to include wood or metal. Instead of grid tied systems we have done much homework on what it takes to have a solar system work efficiently. Among a few other ideas on sustainable power generation. Great video and I greatly enjoyed your sharing. Very nicely constructed and designed. If I make it to Louisiana.... maybe I can park there a day or two...If we all share and offer help to each other... we can beat this old paradigm of paying to exist. Why are humans the only animals on earth that pay to exist... because we have consented to this idea that it's normal. Why? because cult ure has told you this... why else would someone keep paying all of their hard earned money just to have a place to sleep and hang out?

    Great tiny home. I love all-in-one designs, and that countertop is great for its usefulness. Art hits the nail on the head as far as appliances; for our vintage Airstream project we've sourced all gently used, stainless (when possible) marine appliances for their durability and superior build quality over their RV cousins.

      Yeah, there are some tips in there but you have to watch the whole thing to find them. The best we can offer right now are our lifestyle videos (ruclips.net/p/PLbxRepdOq2Mmmq5sUNuU9TDu60J2zoYBd) and our build timelapses (ruclips.net/p/PLbxRepdOq2MlVOrTHnYCT2jl1-APBRgdi). Wouldn't that be a little difficult since they already completed theirs? Unless they start a new one. Each video is a little tip in itself I think.
      There is also Tiny Nest and Living Big in a Tiny House which both do great tutorials for building.

    There may even be room in the closet to store kitchenware. To extend counter space, place a cutting board over a sink or stove. Try pull-out boards and a portable stove top. With under-counter appliances, span windows across an entire kitchen counter for greater light in such a busy area.

    The trick I use to keep my ice cream from becoming too hard may work for him for preventing frozen lettuce. Put the lettuce package in a large zip-lock bag(don't take the air out) and he can take a damn paper towels and wrap each beer bottle to make them colder/faster.

    I'm thinking that if Art placed his lettuce in one of those lightly insulated bags, the ones that cost a buck and are used to transport ice cream from the store to home, that may be a solution to prevent his lettuce from freezing.

    Is no one going to talk about how his curtains are right next to the burners?

    • @TinyHouseGiantJourney
      @TinyHouseGiantJourney  9 лет назад +6

      Jacob Estes Most tiny houses have this situation, so do we. His curtains are attached with bungees and he can pop them off quickly when he cooks. Ours use a pressure rod and we do the same, just remove them when we cook and put them back when we don't :)

    • @jacobestes
      @jacobestes 9 лет назад +2

      Tiny House Giant Journey Instead of curtains, couldn't he use something like books of matches stitched together, or maybe some oily rags?

    • @TinyHouseGiantJourney
      @TinyHouseGiantJourney  9 лет назад +12

      Jacob Estes Nothing quite like living on the edge! Though I wouldn't make the assumption that Art is not smart enough to know about fire safety. Many large houses out there are more prone to fire issues than Art's house. He's built many houses of all sizes, has created business and worked in law enforcement for years. He knows what he's doing. I do like the idea of matches stitched together to form curtains though, maybe you should create an Etsy shop selling them!
