Cuando hay tanta emoción, tanto drama , no hacen falta subtítulos. Gran, gran performance. Excelente Donizetti y sus discípulos. Maravillosa ópera, música sublime, dirección perfecta. Las voces estupendas. Gran drama. Me encantó el personaje de Amelia…exquisito como todas las heroínas de Donizetti. Grande el maestro Cesar, conmovedora actuación e interpretación. Mil gracias por subir esta joya. Gracias de corazón.
Donizetti was an amazingly prolific composer. Even his less performed operas have some fabulous music. The final act of this opera has some particularly wonderful music. What a great find!
The final act was not written by Donizetti. He wrote only half of this opera. Sad history, all because of the lead soprano at the Opéra, Rosine Stolz, at the time, she so hated the work that she refused to sing in it or have it produced.

Esatto.Perfino al Festival Donizetti di Bergamo in tutti questi anni non è mai stata eseguita.Eppure ci sono delle splendide e celebri arie come quelle del Duca e di Marcello di Bruges.

Time: 1573
Act 1
The Duke of Alba has been sent to Flanders to suppress the rebellion against Spanish rule. Shortly before the action begins, Amelia's father Egmont, a Flemish hero, had been executed by the Duke and she is now determined to assassinate him. The Duke discovers that his long-lost son Marcello, Amelia's lover, is now the leader of the rebellion. The Duke arrests him when he refuses to join the Spanish army.
Act 2
When Marcello is freed from prison, he appeals to the Duke to spare his co-conspirators and Amelia, all of whom have been arrested in Daniele Bauer's tavern. The Duke reveals to Marcello that he is his father. In exchange for his friends' freedom, Marcello kneels before the Duke and acknowledges him as his father.
Act 3
Marcello confesses to Amelia that he is the Duke's son. She asks him to kill the Duke as proof of his love for her. Torn between his father and the woman he loves, Marcello hesitates. Later at the port of Antwerp, Amelia, disguised as a man, takes matters into her own hands and attempts to stab the Duke to death. Marcello throws himself on the Duke to shield him and is unwittingly killed by Amelia.

I hate to tell you, but Donizetti didn't write a single note of this aria. He left the opera unfinished, especially the last two acts, and this aria was composed by Matteo Salvi, who finished the opera in the 1880's. Verdi reused the libretto (with modifications) for I Vespri Siciliani.

What a dreary, uninspired score. Donizetti had obviously lost it by this time in his life. The production hardly helps; atrocioiusly sung on all count. A work that deserves to be consigned to the scrapheap. Boring, boring, boring.
