You voiced my thoughts about putting the No-breed-Does with the wethers: the play and activity will be good for them! Running and jumping around with those boys will help develop muscles and growth!
The wethers are also super friendly, so the does would remain tame and calm. Good use for that large pen.

They lay Brown eggs and I ordered from 2 different hatcheries so not crossbred(not sure it matters\_(",)_/) when I continue to hatch out chicks...from what I read were used before Cornish Cross- 12 weeks to process /280 eggs a year...All we can do is Try❤

Red Sussex chickens! Eat and breeding. Broody hen on any eggs. Like raised boxes in the shade. We used pallet wood and screened in the front, top and sides, and split up the cage into four sections for laying and hinges in back boards to get eggs. We then built a ramp up to one of the sides where we cut the screen. Hung that piece of the screen over the hole with zip ties to swing it down at night. This was in the high dessert too. Nice update on everything Blue Cactus! Love the music. Blessings

Derek I believe the speckled Sussex is the chicken you are wanting dual purpose breed, calm, broody, good size to eat and good egg layer - Bri from the Art and Bri channel just had some arrive on there channel today after she did her homework and spoke to Murray McMurray Hatchery for their advice as well - she got a batch of roosters to harvest in 12 weeks and some hens and will keep one rooster to breed replacements

Look at Dorking Chickens. They lay more eggs in the winter then other hens and are 3rd best in broodiness. For whatever reason, the hens will become broody after laying approx 35-50 eggs. Also, good foragers and are a healthy meat chicken. Males 9lbs, Females 7lbs. They are classified as an ancient breed.

Partridge and Buff Chanteclers are very very broody but they won’t work for you. They are bred for cold climate so would likely die of the heat. We are in Colorado and have had very good luck with them making enough birds to sell some hens and eat roosters. Haven’t bought chicken in about three years.

general rule of thumb is to keep 1 drake per three hens. I got lucky with mine and have 4 each; so 4 breeding pairs, and when I incubated 16 eggs I had 14 hatch out. I credited the number of drakes I have with the high fertility rate in the eggs. Just my thoughts on how many ducks you have. My ducks also out-lay my chickens. In this heat I'm only getting 2 chicken eggs a day. I get 4 duck eggs every day, though.

For chickens: I'd say look at Jersey Giants, Red Rangers/Freedom Rangers, and if you don't mind an ugly chicken the Turken/ Naked Necks. Just some ideas. The main thing is trying to find something that has good food conversion and can deal with the heat.

Those bucks are beautiful. They have deadly aim with their pee though. I had 2 large Buicks for a while. I think I'm engaged to one. He peed on me from 5 feet away. That was before the 6 feet rule. Everytime I turned my back on him he tried to mount me. It really got wild when the antelope herds across the road from us started their riutt and the does go go into season. I guess they are closely related to goats even though they are a different species.

Go watch Bri & Art’s RUclips channel with today’s video, they just talked about a breed that can be eaten (meatier breed) very broody also. It’s a red chicken but don’t remember the name but she talks about it. They got them from McMurry hatchery. Very reputable hatchery 👍

Never go into the pig's pen in sandals lol! Our male likes to try to lick people's toes and tried nibbling on them. Its the grossest thing ever lol.
Key West chickens are super broody, prolific, great moms, lay a ton of eggs. The eggs are small though and they are a smaller chicken but not as small as bantams. They have been living feral on Key West for over 400 years and can forage and take care of themselves. There are rescue groups where you can get some. We got ours 10yrs ago.
We have one of our KW hens raising 12 heritage turkeys we ordered from Ideal Poultry hatchery as day old poults, right now. They are gawky teenagers now. and about twice her size but she puts them in their place lol. Its the funniest thing ever. KW hens will raise just about anything. We found stray kittens under one last winter. staying nice and warm.
