This is my favorite lens on any system for all time. The compromises between focal length range, aperture, sharpness, AF speed, size, weight, ergonomics, and cost is absolutely amazing. I have taken so many great photos with this lens.
This is an impressive lens. I sold it after using it for a few months, but I regretted it a few months later, because when I checked my photo album, I found that more than half of the good photos were taken by it. Yes, I bought one again. After this time, I feel the value of this lens even more!
Thanks Chris. That chart showing maximum aperture at each focal length was really helpful. Not enough reviewers do that imo. Thanks for another great review.
Whew I've been waiting on this review since the 28-200's release! From personal experience it has the versatility of the APSC 18-135mm lenses with much better light gathering and sharpness. My only ding is that Tamron didn't make this a stabilized lens, as sometimes you need to crank that ISO up at 200mm to get sharp images at high MP.
I was waiting for it too and Indeed we miss the stabilization. But it makes the lens significantly lighter. Tamron 17-70mm APSC is heavy for the same reason.
FINALLY! This Tamron is actually the first superzoom ever, that rivals the venerable Olympus 12-100mm mft superzoom in optical quality. But now in full frame with a brighter aperture. Toss in the 18mm 2.8 and 45mm 1.8 Samyangs, and you have an affordable killer travel kit!
Yeah, I have the 12-100 and always considered it the type of lens that can cause you to buy into a system. The availability of the 28-200 is causing me to very probably make the switch to Sony. An A7C +28-200 is basically no bigger than an E-M1.2 + 12-100

For some reason it's more reliable in AF-C mode. I use it on 7R III. I'm very happy with it and haven't had a lens change since the summer of 2020 lol

I have been using this lens for a few months now on my Sony A7Riii and I really love it. I use it quite a lot as a walk around lens, most of the time during daylight hours. When using it in low light in the evening I use it with my camera on a tripod. The wide zoom range makes it quite a versatile lens.

Whether Sony a7CR + Tamron 200mm + crop = as sharp as Sony A7CR + new Tamron 300mm natively (due to huge resolution of A7CR)? An A7R body with this lens seems like a great travel option amazing potential to go from fairly wide to super zoomed in with enough sharpness to crop generously. I was on the verge of actually buying that exact setup, but the lack of OIS really put me off for the way I shoot
After watching this review I bought the lens. I also own the Sony 70-200 F4 G mk2. It is really hard to see any difference in sharpness or contrast between the two lenses, and stabilisation with the Tamron is very similar, even though the Tamron doesn't have internal stabilisation.

This actually might be the ticket for me as an Sony apsc shooter. I imagine quite a few people already have the sigma 16 1.4 for wide angle, and this would cover just about everything else while offering a bit more on the telephoto side for those random bird opportunities than an 18-135. Would love to see this retested on an apsc to see if the image quality holds up as well as it did here

Hi, I like your reviews. Clear, trustfull en to the point. I keep struggling with a choice between the Tamrom 28-200 and the Sony 24-105. I like to shoot nature, animals in nature, portraits and all kind of events. I shoot almost always in good light conditions. If you, as a photographer with such a profile, have to choose between those lenses, witch one should you choose? And if picture quality is important? The price isn’t a big deal here in Belgium, with the current cashback on the Sony lenses the difference is more or less 200 dollar. Geert
Thanks for another great review. I have the Tamron 17-28mm which I think is a great lens, and the Tamron 28-75mm which is only OK. Is there any chance that you could compare the Tamron 28-75 against the 28-200? I do mainly landscape work, so the extra zoom is far more important than the wider aperture.

Hi Chris! Does the 'Lock' switch on the lens only lock the zoom ring closed at 28mm? Or can you lock it at any focal length to avoid the zoom creep you mentioned?
Is it better to buy a Sony 18-105 lens or a Tamron 28-200 for the alpha6000? I know that the tamron has a bigger "shot" but I wonder which one takes better photos at the focal lengths I use most often, around 16-28 and 50-100. I also have a kit for the sony 16-50 and 55-210. I would like to have one lens for everything :)
Hello, I just bought the lens and it arrived today. However it is fairly stiff to zoom.. Is this because I bought a demo model that has been on display in the shop? Will it get less stiff the more I use or??
my first experience with the tamron rxd serie lenses was disappointing (28-75 f2.8 and 20mm 2.8) mainly because of the distortion. Also my experience with tamron super zooms for the A mount is that Tamron has unacceptable distortion. But with this 28-200 distortion is very good controlled, and overall it performs much better than my sony 24-240. and 40% less weight as a bonus. I think for many photographers this is the only lens you will ever need. What really is missing is a focus hold / manual fucus button on the lens, as the one on the camera is not very ergonomically in use.
Excellent content as always! Well done. This lens is tipping the scale of my system selection. Like many I'm looking seriously at the Sony A7RIII, R6, and X-T4. Having sold all my Nikon dslr kit while it had value I've been sitting on the sidelines waiting for a good direction. Curious of your personal thoughts concerning the A7RIII vs. R6? This is for capturing life with my 6 children as well as serious photography which we all do as a family (landscape etc.). Thanks Brother (love your library selections) :D.
Chris I have the older copy and use it almost daily I have the 3.8- 5.6 great lens even though I use it on my APS-C cameras. I normally shoot at F6.5 OR F-11
"I'm updating to a7r3 soon as many people have requested" lol, why not the newest model a7r4 or even a1? You are one of the best reviewers, dude! Get the best camera!
I don't want the a7rIV because I want to continue testing lenses at the 42mp/45mp resolution. It means by tests can be a little more comparable across camera systems
Will there be an mk2 version any time soon? The 28-75 mk2 has much better corner sharpness and autofocus than its predecessor, and if the 28-200 would get similar improvements, it would be a killer lens.
I would suggest to you to upgrade to the A7r4. There are many grey dealers on ebay that ship directly from UK (or switzerland). I've seen them for around 2500€. I think the upgrade is worth the extra money considering the extra pixel, the better color rendition and the better autofocus
No, I love the 42mp sensor of my new a7R III because it's perfect for lens testing. 61mp is too far away from Sony's 24mp cameras to be useful to people who own those (and there are many), and 42mp is roughly in line with the 45mp cameras I use for testing Nikon and Canon equipment :-)
Great review as always, nice to see a super zoom that doesnt sick. Great for A7 users and even R2 and 3 owners. Also nice to see that A7R2 being upgraded, but (aside from price) do you think it would be better to go for the R4 instead for testing lenses with its 61mp resolution and its 26mp APS-C mode could do the job of both the R2 and the A5100 in 1 body.
Nah, I love the 42mp sensor of my new a7R III because it's perfect for lens testing. 61mp is too far away from Sony's 24mp cameras to be useful to people who own those (and there are many), and 42mp is roughly in line with the 45mp cameras I use for testing Nikon and Canon equipment :-) you do make a good point about shooting in APS-C mode though
In my experience this may be the best performance to cost value you can get. It's an amazing lens with super sharpness and speed from 28mm to 75mm where it still delivers f4.0. It's a close competitor to Tamron's 28-75 2.8 G2. At the long end it still delivers f4.0 at 75mm and drops to f4.5 at 100mm, f5.0 at 135mm and f5.6 toward 200mm. Tamron's 70-180 2.8 beats it on the long end with better contrast and faster aperture but not by much. Focus is excellent but not quite as quick as the 70-180. Combine the 28-200 with a fast 85 1.8 (Viltrox) and you've got an excellent kit.
I enjoyed for first time this weekend this lens. It is really sharp, outdoor i cant see a difference with the 28-75 tamron or sony 24-105 really sharp lenses, and in crop mode i have 28-300 reach with a sony a7riii really good
You should test one off the camera store shelf, not one Tamron sent to you to test. If Tamron would like to have you test a lines they can reimburse you for the one you purchased off the shelf.
More to the point, that magnitude of focal range without the awful optics of traditional superzooms. Sure there are compromises, but it beats the pants off the Sony/Nikon/Canon superzooms in resolution and/or light gathering.
I have this bought. No regret at all. I have it side by side to the 28-75. Honestly, you are not going to notice the difference at 28mm. At other focal length, the main difference is the aperture. The long end alone is better than the Sony 70-300 in the overlapping focal length! And if large aperture is not a priority, it is only marginally worse than the tamron 70-180 (which I also have). The convenience makes me shoot more photos I normally would have missed. This lens has given me more keepers than my 70-180 for that reason alone, despite the marginally worse performance. The only thing I miss on the 70-180 when I don’t bring it is the low light performance on the tele end
ngl, it'd be sweet if you got the chance to try the sony g master 35mm 1.4... it truly is a dream lens (not so much for videographers maybe due to focus breathing?) size, sharpness, focus speed, overall my favorite lens ever. personally speaking... i'd get the 85mm gm but it's not so fast focusing and size makes it quite a deal breaker, the sigma 85mm dg dn sounds and looks so much more attractive and i'll probably fall in love with it ^^ (if i didnt care for weather sealing the sony 85 1.8 would do much more than well enough for me)

Hi Chris! Does the 'Lock' switch on the lens only lock the zoom ring closed at 28mm? Or can you lock it at any focal length to avoid the zoom creep you mentioned?
Only locks at 28mm
Your excellent explanation causes me to buy one ............ thanks christ
You should wait for the a7r3a to come out, Christopher. Looks like a nice revision to the rear screen resolution.
I just switched over from canon to Sony. This was the first lens i bought....it was too convenient for the price...28-200mm? EASY Decision
Hello, I just bought the lens and it arrived today. However it is fairly stiff to zoom.. Is this because I bought a demo model that has been on display in the shop? Will it get less stiff the more I use or??
No idea, sorry!
It loosens up a bit over time.
my first experience with the tamron rxd serie lenses was disappointing (28-75 f2.8 and 20mm 2.8) mainly because of the distortion.
Wow, impressive. Would be nice paired with the 20 f2.
wish they make this lens for fuji x mount😢
At least you have the 18-300 on that mount. Perhaps not quite as good optically, but very versatile.
Chris
I have the older copy and use it almost daily I have the 3.8- 5.6 great lens even though I use it on my APS-C cameras.
Right? Hopefully the g2 would have IS.
I love your reviews! ^^
Please do tamron 35-150 vc osd
Is this lens suitable for street photography or portrait shooting? I will use it with Sony A6000
Eye focus on a7 r2 does Not work... isn't it?
Is this lens good on a Sony a7iii? And is the focus good?
Se puede usar este lente con un objetivo Nikon D3100.?
no, only for sony ML cameras
So well balanced lens !
I just bought this as my first lens for Sony. I hope it’s good...
I enjoyed for first time this weekend this lens. It is really sharp, outdoor i cant see a difference with the 28-75 tamron or sony 24-105 really sharp lenses, and in crop mode i have 28-300 reach with a sony a7riii really good
No Test on an APS-C body? That could be an interesting range to work with on APS-C
Not really - 28mm isn't a wide enough angle. Much better to go with a smaller and less expensive APS-C superzoom like an 18-200mm lens
good stuff Chris!
You should test one off the camera store shelf, not one Tamron sent to you to test. If Tamron would like to have you test a lines they can reimburse you for the one you purchased off the shelf.
I am new to DSLR world, can anyone tell me is this good as a all round lense for Canon 90d
Can you do two 35mm lenses sometime: the Tamron 35mm f/1.8 and the original canon 35L
make a video on sony 24-240mm and tamrom 28-200mm plzz
that magnitude of focal range!!!!!
More to the point, that magnitude of focal range without the awful optics of traditional superzooms. Sure there are compromises, but it beats the pants off the Sony/Nikon/Canon superzooms in resolution and/or light gathering.
comparisson with 70 -200 f4?
They're very different lenses. One is a super zoom, one is just a tele zoom
The only thing I miss on the 70-180 when I don’t bring it is the low light performance on the tele end
should i get this lens?
ngl, it'd be sweet if you got the chance to try the sony g master 35mm 1.4... it truly is a dream lens (not so much for videographers maybe due to focus breathing?) size, sharpness, focus speed, overall my favorite lens ever.
personally speaking...
i'd get the 85mm gm but it's not so fast focusing and size makes it quite a deal breaker, the sigma 85mm dg dn sounds and looks so much more attractive and i'll probably fall in love with it ^^ (if i didnt care for weather sealing the sony 85 1.8 would do much more than well enough for me)
All the previous Tamron super zooms crawled sickly so this one could walk and even run gracefully.
