This video is not intended to imply that modern games are completely irredeemable. There are plenty of modern games that I enjoy (AAA or other) as I'm sure most of you do as well. This is merely a video covering some of the common complaints we all have. Also, a lot of you have mentioned Indie games, to which the criticisms mentioned in this video generally don't apply. I'm mostly talking about the big budget "AAA" games here. If you'd like to see a video where I talk about why Indie games are so beneficial to gaming, you can view that here: ruclips.net/video/sgPvVVNA2u4/видео.html

How are indie games supposed to count the same as modern games? A game that is explicitly designed to play like an older game counts the same as a retro game. "Retro" doesn't mean a game is actually old, it includes the games that are styled after those older games, which accounts for about 95% of indie games.

They fucked up Mario Odessey, in that game they removed the lives system and when you die you lose 10 coins.
It is so easy to get coins so it is impossible to get a game over unless you just off a cliff over and over until you die.

I really didn't even pay attention to the world of modern gaming because I really loved playing that one already, and the few times I see the Sims 4 I was disappointed by its sallowness, and this actually felt like a theme in modern games... • @TheYoshiFanatic
      @TheYoshiFanatic 3 года назад

@@omarsheriff51 certainly a fair point that single player AAA games aren't nearly as predatory as the majority of multiplayer AAA games. You're right that they don't have all of the loot boxes and pay-to-win mechanics of the multiplayer games. But as far as DLC is concerned, yes it existed back in the 90's with games like Sonic and Knuckles, but it was an extremely uncommon practice back then. Now the majority of even single player games have DLC. With games like Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Zero Dawn, which are both fantastic games, it's almost worth it to wait until a definitive edition comes out so you can get the full experience without having to buy extras. I miss being able to buy a game and be assured that that was it, I had the full experience right there.

    • @TheYoshiFanatic
      @TheYoshiFanatic 3 года назад

@@omarsheriff51 that's a good point, most of the time the DLC a game offers is just a bonus, and not integral to the experience the game offers. With my examples of Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima, both DLCs offer story content as well as new weapons or other items to collect. These simply serve to enhance the existing full experience. Still, I do feel like I'm missing out if I don't buy the DLC in this case. Admittedly, I'm a cheapskate, and I probably should be willing to shell out the extra $10 or $20. Maybe I'm just spoiled by games like Celeste, The Messenger and Hollow Knight, which offer this sort of content as a free update.
I will acquiesce and agree that this type of DLC, while I still find it annoying, is acceptable. What I can't get behind is DLC that locks important or at least meaningful content behind a paywall, such as Zelda Breath of the Wild and Metroid Samus Returns, which both have a harder difficulty only accessible via paid DLC or mandatory amiibos. Admittedly, this isn't the norm, but it certainly does exist.

I think simplicity has a lot to do with it for me. Today, you hop into a game and, like you said, you need to sit through a drawn out opening. Once the games starts, you usually have a huge open world to explore, tons of side activities and quests to do, random loot and items to find, and tons of different skills and systems (like item crafting) to keep track of. It can be pretty overwhelming. Sometimes you just want to pop in Castlevania, smack some demons and monsters with you whip and give Dracula a piece of your mind.

Even Dark Souls is pretty simple mechanics-wise in it's core.
Think of a game like Dragon's Dogma:Dark Arisen, or Monster Hunter, God Eater, Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, Samurai Warriors, etc. I'd argue that games like these play more like retro games rather than "AAA" games.

My biggest gripe with modern games/consoles is sometimes you need to have internet connection in order for some games to work, or you need an account which is free to create but they'll inevitably start blasting ads about "premium membership" or something like that. Games like Wind Waker, Jet Grind Radio, Limbo, Cuphead, Ori, Gris, Okami, etc. will never age a day due to their distinctive artstyles, but games like Detroit and The Last of Us Pt 2 will look outdated in just a few years' time.

My last PS4 buy (2nd from last buy actually) was Ghost of Tsushima. I got bored 35 minutes in and turned it off. It was later stated to me by a friend that I never made it to the title screen. I think in those 35 minutes I moved around, killed maybe 10 people.. the rest was narrative, story telling and cut scenes. Firstly, it took more than 35 minutes before I could play it because of the huge download, system update and god knows what else. But its alarming to me how little gameplay was in that game. Story telling is good, but game designers can and should make sure that the elements are split between gameplay and story telling. Mario games have stories, but within 2 mins your doing your thing. Thats a good balance.

This video hits home. My first console was a NES, but I was born in 92 so really the PS1 era was where I started off. Modern games can appeal to me at times, but the downloads and updates have really hurt everything. Xbox 360/PS3 era was not so bad, usually these updates took at most 5 minutes or so even on terrible internet. In the PS4/Xbox One generation, I kinda fell off the wagon. I live in a rural area with poor internet, so updates can take half a day on these consoles. This in turn made me play these consoles less, and like you said, now everytime I turn those consoles I can't even play them. I really love the 6th generation of consoles my self, but I have found that 7th gen is probably my cut off. I probably have 30 or so games so far(and still buying) for 360/PS3 where as on Ps4/Xbox One I have maybe 5 to 8 games for each and I dont see myself buying anymore games for those consoles. Several of those games are just remasters of old games I love anyways.

Also padding is a huge problem in modern games.
You get a masterpiece once in a while that can justify the time but generally its padding.
I guess my biggest problem with modern gaming is that I just don't have the time to invest 100 hours in just a single game.

You nailed it with your analysis. The microtransactions are definitely annoying, but my biggest gripe is that modern games are too often released in a buggy, unfinished state. Sometimes the updates to the games can fix one problem while introducing others. Updates even end up diminishing the gameplay you’ve gotten used to. For example, I bought my PS4 when it first came out so that I could play Street Fighter 5, as I’m a huge old school Street Fighter fan. After getting to know how a few of the characters played for a few months, Capcom released an update that actually took moves away from some of the characters I’d gotten used to playing with. That was when I was officially done with many modern games. All those months of practice just felt wasted with the latest invasive meddling. Back in my day, games were released in a finalized state, and what you got was what you worked with, bugs and all. And learning how to exploit some of those bugs was part of the fun. It just seems nowadays developers are too reliant on being able to update and can sometimes ruin the experience with incessant tweaks to how the game feels.

I play both modern and retro games, and your points are in general pretty spot on.
There are some exceptions I’d like to point out. Not every retro game was a “pick up and play” style of game. For example, plenty of retro RPGs for PC were very in depth and required you to a) read the manual and b) expect to spend up to an hour just creating your character. Plus, many of these games were incredibly long, with some lasting well over 100 hours.

Man, I'm not a content creator, but I've long thought about doing a video to talk about this exact topic, and you pretty much covered everything I've wanted to say. I'm not at all into modern games, and I tell people who try to get me into them that it's mostly because it feels like you're just watching a long movie where occasionally you get to press a button or two. The focus by modern game designers seems to be almost, if not entirely, on trying to make the game look like real life, instead of making it, you know, a GAME. A fun game, preferably.
That was everything about the games I grew up on. They created a sense of wonder with the gaming environment, while giving you complete control over your character. Was it sometimes clunky compared to today? Sure, but it was fun being able to just effortlessly press a few buttons and make your character do all sorts of things. Now, everything is tactical and tedious, and you have these giant controllers with a million buttons that you have to memorize what they all do. It's just not for me.

You pretty much nailed all the reasons in this video. But the difficulty issue is the one that really bothers me with modern games. They really do hold your hand and the penalty for failure is almost non-existent. Not to get on my soap-box, but I think the aforementioned issue with modern games is actually an issue with our society as a whole. I think the everyone gets a trophy, we don't ever want you to feel bad, if you can't do it we'll just lower the bar for you so you can do it, is negatively impacting our society. And we are seeing the results of this mindset in our society today. Growth, learning, and resiliency happen through failure. Failure is an essential (and valuable) aspect of life that we are trying to have people avoid today. I honestly think a lot of my competitive drive today is a result of hours and hours of frustration from impossibly hard NES games I relentlessly tried to beat as a kid.

The problem for is mostly around AAA games. Use a game engine that is already established, use Earthlike environments as your skins and maps, put a generic guy in a army suit or a T-shirt and give him some big guns to blow something up. Sequel, just add a few more maps and weapons.
Racing games - Cops and robbers
    Gran Turismo with shinier graphics.
Does anyone ever think what a AAA Space Harrier game would like today on PS5? Does anyone think what a AAA Pilotwings could look like or play like? Where is the imagination gone?
Lastly, I hate games where controlling the camera is part of the skill of the game. Example, I prefer God of War on PS2 compared to God of War PS4. On PS4 there are so few enemies because if you had 20 of them fighting you would be dead by being attacked from behind. Imagine playing Street Fighter 2 but the camera kept going all over the place. Sometimes simple is better. Personally I hate dual analog controllers and have a hard time with them. Even on the easiest settings I struggle so I would rather play a game with intuitive controls my brain can relate to.
The games that have come out since PS2-PS5 generations are just remixing the same engines and maps. I enjoyed Gran Turismo on PS1 because it was exciting and new, but if a GT game came out today I wouldn't give it a second glance. The game that Polyphony made before GT was Motortoon Grand Prix 2 on the PS1. Its one of my favourite PS1 games (its not well regarded compared to Mariokart, but still its one of the most ambitious games on PS1).

Their games don't usually have long cutscenes and the basic gameplay is easy to grasp from the beginning but offers a lot for advanced players as well. The best aspect for me is that they don't try to hop into the bandwagon of "mature" and ultrarealistic game design. The main reason I like games is that they offer something that I can't experience elsewhere. If I want to see realistic environment I just go outside. The only complaint I have is that the overall difficulty is a bit too low in most of their games.

NPCs all break...it's awful...and yeah people will keep saying "oh they'll patch that". Like it's an adventure game, and I already passed the scene!

Um.... Retro gamers dont like modern games? Depends on what really define as a retro gamer. Im a gamer, Ive been gaming since I was five years old on the Atari 2600, had friends that had NES consoles until we got a Genesis, and Im very much a gamer to this day, I play almost all of it.
The single-most problem with modern gaming is the internet and Microsoft. When Microsoft came onto the scene with Xbox, initially, they, presumably, had SEGA on their side. SEGA did, however, pull some really strange moves with the most obvious being sending their mascot immediately to the competition that wanted to bury them in a Senate hearing, still, with the support they got from Microsoft on the Dreamcast, most gamers figured it was a really strong relationship and dubbed the Xbox the Dreamcast 2, though SEGA was everywhere and dropping exclusives everywhere, it was strange.
But, thats about all Microsoft really had. They acquired Rare from Nintendo and managed to snag Bungie. The biggest problem is, Xbox was new to the console scene and Sony and Nintendo had spent decades building relationships with developers, earning their trust, and building household names. Xbox had none of that.
When Xbox launched, along with it came the beginning of Subscription-based online services. The Dreamcast had online capability, but you werent paying SEGA for SEGA.NET, you were paying for your internet. But once Xbox Live came on the scene, it couldve been the greatest thing anyone had ever seen, if youre a fan of the Angry Videogame Nerd, youd know why, but it began something horrendous instead.
Because Microsoft had no prior relationship with developers, especially during the Xbox 360 era, Microsoft turned to what they knew best and their biggest advantage. See, Microsoft didnt have to earn anything, Microsoft had deep pockets and could buy anyone off, but they knew they couldnt buy competition outright, you had to poison the competition by degrees, that meant rather than Microsoft going right after Grand Theft Auto, they offered Rockstar, instead, a fat sum of cash for DLC content that would be exclusive to Xbox, that was the start. Developers later learned that during the development time of game making, they could dissect their games before they went gold and on vacation, and they could sell a base game for $60 and then hold parts or levels of the game in reserve to sell later as add-on content called DLC designed to expand the game for those that wanted more, problem is, instead of a pay once experience forever model, you had to buy additional content thst shouldve been part of the initial purchase from the start. Also, gaming updates allowed for developers to get lazy. In earlier console generations you play tested your games constantly, there were QA teams whose jobs were find bugs and report them to ensure when a game was finally pressed, it was top quality, id it wasnt, reviewers found them and massacred your game in reviews. These days, developers are under crunch times and are so rushed, that they ship a crap product with the intent of updating over time. That still requires man hours, which still costs a publisher money, so why not crank out a quality and complete game from the start? Its been done before for decades.
Then came the mobile sphere which made it worse. Free2Play models. The US has never gotten quality mobile games, while Japan hordes all the best games, core gamers would want to play on their phones, and with the Free2Play model came Microtransactions, one of the worst things to happen to gaming in its history. Cosmetic items at a $1 a piece that, to the unititiated eventually became Pay2Win, its free, but to not waste your life away farming, pay some money and finish the game so you can move onto the next one, or spend, literally weeks, farming resources to move to stage 1-2.
Eventually, Season Passes ame about that bundled all additional content onto one payment of, generally, $25. This ensured youd get everything post launch, because gamers were catching on, they were getting smart and just waiting for Microsofts next trap, the Game of the Year Edition. Wait a year after the games launch and get everything on a single disc, hopefully to include all the updates making the game what it shouldve been at launch, but a year later.
Eventually, companies like Capcom werent satisfied and wanted to pick gamers pockets even more, so now, you have Season 2 Pass for that year thats been emulated by Microsoft with their Killer Instinct franchise and now Nintendo with Smash Bros. Are you seeing a pattern?
The point is, internet on consoles introduced the worst thing that could happen to gamers and fans of gaming you didnt see in the retro era, with the exception of one SEGA Genesis game and that was then known as lock-on technology. The internet created a way for game creators to lose their love of developing great games to make the gamer happy into finding ways to pick peoples pockets, especially during financially tight times like now.
Its current gen times like these past few that you find just how cruel, greedy, and dishonest human beings really can be, that they'll try to cheat or swindle people lower on the financial ladder with the smallest things picking their pocket $1 at a time, and that they dont care to get ahead so they can buy their fifth house, while the people theyre selling to dont even have a single house thats the difference. The internet for gaming couldve been great for gaming to help in times of the LJN Curse, and made online gaming with friends and family, amazing, but when you buy a game today at $70 and get it home and pop it into your console to find you have a massive update to have to download, even on day 1, most internet providers have data caps and penalties for going over those, that are expensive, and you cant play a single player game without that, your game just got that much more expensive. Its a trickle effect making it unless youre well off, you wont even be able to afford to game again and thats sad.

100% agree. The only new games I play nowadays are the ones that deliberately mimic retro games. Kemco produces some pretty good jrpgs & there are plenty of relatively recent home brew games for 8 bit consoles like the NES & GB.

My biggest problem with modern gaming is some games have extra content that are only available through a download code instead of being on the disc when there is clearly still enough space.
Great video by the way however I respectfully disagree about games feeling they take forever to release after they are first revealed.
Nintendo is notorious for delaying games and consoles and not having enough supply to keep up demand for years.

Oh, leaving content off the disc when there's still space for it is definitely annoying! I'm not following your second point though. Wouldn't games being delayed make it feel like they take longer to come out?

I prefer 8 bit to 16 bit retro gaming because the games are that much shorter and I can finish a game in 20 min. Also it's instant playing. Don't have to read tutorials, pause the game to see controls, wait for a long drawn out cut scene etc.

I just turned 30 and my first console was the Sega mega drive so I grew up with retro classics, and I do feel that mainstream modern games have seen significant declines in quality in many ways. I definitely agree with the decline in difficulty, they seemed to get easier and easier with each generation. Even Sega mega drive games were significantly easier than NES games. Also, I think a lot of the new graphics have a "cheaper" look to them, somehow. A good example of this (in my opinion) is Abe's Oddysee for the PS1 vs New and Tasty. I think the combination of sprites and hand-drawn backgrounds in the original look way superior to the new and tasty graphics, it's like more effort was required from developers because the technology wasn't as advanced. That being said, though, when I turned about 18 and the PS3 came out and I had my first taste of Call of Duty online multiplayer, I was totally blown away and hooked in a way that I had never experienced up until that point. Games that good are worth waiting for. And when Battlefield 3 came out, man, games like that just provide a level of entertainment that retro games just cannot match. But the same is true for retro games, but in different ways. I also agree with the long introduction point you made; my brother got me Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain one Christmas, and that first mission sneaking out of the hospital, I found it quite tedious and didn't feel like I was playing MGS for about an hour. And I also hate how so many modern games are like movies; I don't even want to give some of the new PS5/Series X games a chance because of their movie-like presentation.

For his retirement present I got him all setup with a ps4, he was so excited to see how great video games must be now all this time later. He played a handful of games over a month or so, and never played the ps4 again. He said the games nowdays are too complicated and take too long to finish to be fun anymore. I think a major problem is that a lot of developers have lost sight of what made video games fun to begin with. They are all so focused on making the biggest games possible, with the same padded out content to have a "hundreds of hours" long experience that just ends up being dull and repetitive. They all chase after the latest fad/success and don't even try to make something unique and fun. "Oh, Skyrim is selling good? Let's copy that and make a giant open world game with no real fun content!"
Then of course, there's the obvious problem of games being broken messes upon release that require a lot of patches just to be playable, the problem with locking in-game content behind a paywall with DLC, the fact that you are even required to be online just to play, and then the wait to even have to install the game even though YOU HAVE THE DISC. The disc you buy is basically worthless now.
There are benefits to modern games, yes, but the ones that I enjoy are few and far between and some modern franchises I once enjoyed have changed too much just to be the next Skyrim (or whatever other popular game there is) that I can't even recognize them anymore.
I miss the days when all you had to do was insert the cartridge/disc and just start playing with no worry of having to pay for additional content or download patches to fix a broken game because everything was already there and you were given a working game.

Games in the 90's felt more focused than modern games and for the most part didn't really have politics in them. Not like now, where they feel unfocused and like they have a ulterior motive. Like being penalised for playing a game for longer than the intended period of time (Xcom 2 springs to mind).

Monetization is the single worst thing to happen to gaming imo. It effects everything about the game, just look at any modern game with loot boxes or ability to spend money to advance. If you can just spend money to get this skin or that character it makes having it meaningless. I always prefer earning these things

I've commented elsewhere, but the main reason these modern games are made because they sell. If your like me and don't like them much, your becoming a rare breed of gamer. Personally if I made games myself, the last thing I would start off with is a template of a planet earth skin/map, a guy wearing a helmet and holding a gun and making audiences wow by how the rain effects make the ground sludgy. I would concentrate on gameplay mechanics no matter how surreal the environment actually was. The first commandment of game design is "If the world is fun to be in, then gamers will want to keep playing your games". It should not matter if its a sequel to a successful game, it should not matter if its got teddy bears in it. If its fun, people will play it. Why studios want to make games that look like Pixar movies is beyond me, just make pixar movies.

I think the obsession with games duplicating reality in certain ways will eventually crash. The backlash a game like RDR 2 got for sacrificing fun for realism makes me think this.

    • @atomiswave1971
      @atomiswave1971 3 года назад +1

@@RetroBirdGaming Even the uncharted series bored me after a while. It was fun in the 1st mixing platforming and shooting but as the series carried on it was just shooting all the time. I don't mind surreal realism like Prince of Persia sands of time and Shadow of the collousus where you get to think, act, fight and adventure around. I know it will probably not happen but i'd love Ubisoft to do a PS4/PS5 remake of Sands of time its one of my favourite games of all time. But your right there is an obsession with developers to stick to tried formulas and this PS5 generation isn't doing anything for me so far. Resident evil 8 is really the only game so far that is exciting me and its about time Silent hill formula came back. Atmosphere is key for me in a game. I might sound a bit contradicting but thats as far as nextgen I really want to go. I also prefer games that take about 8-12 hours to beat. I feel that if a game is longer than that its artificially lengthened. I will only buy physical so if a game is download only I just won't buy it. If everything goes to download only I won't buy anything at all.

For me the biggest two issues are that the amount of storage required for modern games is immense and also the fact that you don't own them any more. If the digital distribution company shuts down or the always online DRM servers are taken offline then you can no longer play the game. With retro games you just put in the disk and play.

Modern games are great, but as with all games there are sensibilities in them that factor in. I spent my 20's in the 90's and grew up with the Genesis, SNES, Neo Geo in the arcade and those are the games I seem to always go back to. They're (in my mind) the epitome of video games, and that's my personal preference. Any young person these days will definitely lean more towards modern games because just like I was in the 90's, surrounded by them. There's a difference in gameplay, visuals and popularity that they resonate with. And that cool too.

I used to regularly go to this takeaway, grab a bag of chips and be on my way, I knew what I was getting and the main purpose was getting some tasty chips in an instant.
They revamped that place, now there are tables in the way of the counter, then you have to follow a process, they ask you several questions on what you want and then you get given a number and wait for your food to be ready and called up.
It's not about just enjoying the chips anymore, it's about the whole experience and process, you do end up with the chips but that's now just a small part of something complicated. I don't go there anymore. I can't be bothered with it.
Games used to be purely about jumping straight in and having fun, now it's a process and experience, and fun being dulled down with so much extra content obstructing it.
