I was introduced to fusion around the same time as I discovered rush (13 -15). Love both types of music and so many others. Thanks - btw- was lucky to catch metheny, Holland, dejounette and Hancock in 89.
I have a 4 disk live album box set of this concert. All you have to say is Stanley Clarke; his album School Daze changed everything I ever listened in terms of Jazz!!!
Thanks for doing this one. One of my favorite pieces of music ever, and this live version is so strong. I remember reading when I bought this album in 1978-ish that this song was a response to the jazz purists who were critical of them for going electric. I always think of this song as a big FU to the haters. A beautiful and amazing FU. Also, how did they get Lenny to play so controlled on this track. So much of his work with RoF was pretty not-subtle. Not being critical of his other work whatsoever. Just noting how perfectly he kept this song together.
I like that you bring that up cause Romantic Warrior, for me, is the best Fusion Song ever made and it's all acoustic. Never knew how big of a sound a Four-piece could make until I heard this.
At RTF's height all these guys were legendary. It was said A Di could play at top speed for so long he was able to wad his pick into a little ball from the heat.
Just found your channel and I never heard these guys before either, but they have some really impressive musicianship on display! Speaking of lesser known acts, I'd love to see you react to this Japanese new age fusion group called Paradigm Shift - their self titled 1985 album can be found on the FOND/SOUNDS RUclips channel. Looking forward to more music reacts!
This performance wasn't too long after they recorded the record (11 days to record the whole album). You can tell there were very few overdubs. They recorded it as they played it.
I've had the good fortune to see Weather Report & Return to Forever live, back in the day, before you had to take out a loan against your mortgage to buy tickets. And I agree, Jaco was great, but Stanley, ... Stanley Clarke's playing brought tears to my eyes. And that's all I'm going to say about that. (sniffles) Nice reaction.
yes--I also had the good fortune of seeing weather report live- with Jaco on bass-- back in 1981- unfortunately I never saw RTF-some of the most interesting--creative and powerful music ever-also brings a nostalgic tear to my eye--after growing up on this- today's music 🎵-- just irritates me- it's ridiculous- the music industry is in quicksand
@@harrybenoit9033 Yeah, I think they were touring on their Heavy Weather album. Good times. The music industry has always sucked. I mean The Cowsills? C'mon. Although I will confess, I bought Hair.
There is no other band Return to Forever Chick Corea Stanley Clarke Al Di Meola Lenny White just with the fusion of fusion it all started Miles Davis b****** Brew check also play with miles these only people mahavishnu John McLaughlin Billy Cobham on drums this is the fusion I grew up with my uncle taught me I was 16 to 17 years old when I learned of Return to Forever mahavishnu Orchestra weather report I love this music deeply

Acoustic Bass looks like an Ukulele in his hands☺️☺️👍

Love Al DiMeola here. Just a kid lol. He was amazing already.

or the one he recorded with Jeff Beck side 1 and John MacLaughlin side 1 on guitar but other musicians were David Sancious, Chick Corea etc
There can’t be many drummers that could have held that together like Lenny White. Amazing version of this track!

Saw them on the album tour in '76, then again for their reunion tour this century. Seen Al multiple times in various configurations!

These are some of the greatest musician ever used to could find them Blues Alley in Georgetown
Al de Meola on guitar. Check out De Meola doing Chasing the Devil down a Spainish Highway. It is awesome
When I bought this album, I thought it was the "Album of the Century". Nothing better before or after (for me)

Always try to play behind me yes I was on drums
wo
Camera men or directors never know who's got the lead, and miss a lot of the money shots when the guys are soloing. Drives me crazy
They are the effin worst. Trying to show off their skills instead of documenting history🙄🙄🙄
