The Brood and Night of the Hunter are great. I own both of them. My dad told me about Night of the Hunter a long time ago and once I watched it became one of my favorites.
Thanks for the list and the reminder about the sale! I'll definitely have to check these out. I was super impressed by M and its use of sound, especially since talking pictures hadn't been around long in 1931. My other favorite Criterion films so far: 12 Angry Men For All Mankind The Graduate Three Colors trilogy Memories of Murder
I really appreciate overviews like these because they service the films much better than the typical horrible trailer. I'm not into Criterion releases as much as you, but many always pique my interest, especially with older movies I've taken forever to get around seeing. It's also always insightful or entertaining to listen to RUclipsrs like you or Daisuke Beppu talk about films in the Criterion Collection.
Daisuke Beppu is a Criterion legend. There’s owning titles from The Criterion Collection, and then there’s actually owning The Criterion Collection, and he’s in the second category.
One of the things i like about I Wanna Hold Your Hand is its probably the last time a film about Beatlemania made while all four Beatles were still alive. Great movie, you can see influence for Used Cars BTTF and other Zemeckis movies in it. Its a perfect companion for a double feature for the mentioned Dazed and Confused or American Graffiti
Thanks for the recommendations! I only have a handful of Criterion titles currently, but a lot of these look great, and so I hit up B&N and probably spent a lot more than I had to! Got "The Hidden Fortress" and "The Complete Lady Snowblood" from your recommendations, but also grabbed "The Princess Bride", "It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", "Fantastic Mr. Fox", and "Shaft (in 4K)". Wanted to also get "When We Were Kings", but it wasn't available to ship online and only good for store pickup (closest store is a couple of hours away), so I'm holding off on that. I did sign up for the Criterion newsletter on their site so that I'll get notified of sales in the future too, so thanks for the heads up on that.
Hi Jeff, I bought 94 films in the last B&N July Criterion sale. Very interesting list as there are a few I have not seen. Glad to see one of my top 10 of all time (Night of the Hunter) make your ten. I've not seen "Come and See" and need to see "The Uninvited" again. I probably won't buy more than 10 this time as I just picked up a dozen in the recent Kino Lorber 50% off last month. Thanks for this! Just 7.8k subscribers to go!
I should just add that Night of the Hunter is getting a 4k from Kino for those that would prefer to wait for that. Great list by the way, nice to hear some different titles. I wish I could take advantage of the 50% off sale in Australia
This was one of your best videos in a long time! You really were right on the money and moved along quickly on the pacing and on point. Also, even though not all of these movies are movies I have seen or necessarily would watch, I like the fact you picked some more obscure films. Fisher King is the most likely pickup out of these for me. The war movie is probably very good. I am just a little too down right now on events in the world. So I can’t really swallow brutal war films and things ATM. I may visit that one further down the road. I know you are probably sick of me mentioning this film, but will you do a review on the new Ghost And The Darkness Blu ray from Shout? Unless you already did and I missed it.
if you haven't seen them, my 10 recommendations for the sale that cover a good range of styles are -High And Low (1963): Part pressure cooker kidnapping story and part police procedural, Kurosawa pulls of both really excellently here. Lots of interesting stuff about moral quandaries and social class -Mikey And Nicky (1976): Atypical take on the gangster film that becomes a really impactful look at male friendship -not one film, but The Essential Jacques Demy box set contains a lot of good stuff ranging from a fairy tale to a musical romantic comedy to a dark drama about gambling addiction -Tampopo (1985): A comedy about making the perfect bowl of ramen which riffs on the style of westerns. Lots of funny vignettes intercut into the main story that are all about people's relationship with food -Detour (1945): Super tightly paced film noir story about a man who steals the identity of a dead man and is then blackmailed by a woman who knows his secret -Rififi (1955): Quintessential heist film with an incredible heist scene performed in total silence -Death by Hanging (1968): Biting dark comedy satire of capital punishment in Japan and Japanese treatment of Koreans that goes to some really strange places and a totally unpredictable ending -Twenty-Four Eyes (1954): Different kind of war film set from the perspective of an elementary school teacher in a small Japanese town before, during, and after WWII as she sees her first grade class grow up over the years as Japan becomes increasingly fascist -The 39 Steps (1935): Hitchcock's precursor to North By Northwest that I think manages to tell the same story with tighter pacing and better comedic elements -Death of a Cyclist (1955): Interesting story about how guilt eats you alive from the inside. Also a look at class privilege in fascist Spain and what people would do to hold onto it
The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes are surprisingly high on my list of favorite Hitchcock films. They're so fun to watch, especially with the comedic elements mixed in.
@@NelsonAT9 The 39 Steps is probably my 2nd favorite overall after Shadow Of A Doubt. The Lady Vanishes, in my opinion, is a perfectly fine movie. It certainly succeeds at being a lighthearted comedic murder mystery on a train but its missing what makes some of Hitchcock's really great works so great.
I picked up -America Lost And Found: The BBS Story -Ali: Feat Eats the Soul -Dreams -Melvin Van Peebles: Essential Films -Blow Out -All That Jazz -The Funeral -The Last Temptation of Christ -Chan Is Missing -Night of the Hunter
Hi Jeff. Great video and recommendations. "Hidden Fortress" is a gem!! So agree with your thoughts about "The Brood", it's a classic Cronenberg film. "Lady Snowblood" is also very good. For starting out, I always recommend Sidney Lumet's "12 Angry Men" which is one of my favorites and a good introduction to Criterion in my humble opinion.
I’m your room tour, you mentioned that people were commenting about Freddy… I see why lol. Are those actual human eyeballs XD. Love this list though! Excited to see the hidden fortress
Great picks, hadn't heard of most of these. Just ordered Hidden Fortress, Lady Snowblood and Come and See but will definitely be picking up more of these once they go on sale (Night of the Hunter in particular looks fascinating).
Barnes and Noble has a good selection of Criterion Blu Ray movies. I buy the ones that come with the bonus features, since they have the most value for the physical movies!
Nice picks! It's tough to try to make a list like this, but I appreciate that you had a fairly wide span of style and theme. Fun fact: The woman holding the shotgun in the scene from Night of the Hunter is Lillian Gish, of silent film fame. (By the time this was made, she was primarily working in theater, but she did choose films on occasion.) And if I remember correctly, The Uninvited was the first film to depict ghosts as legitimate entities, rather than trickery or some kind of dream/hallucination. That there was no earthly explanation for the paranormal activity in the film particularly disturbed audiences at the time.
I was quite impressed with two films in the last couple years from Criterion... "The Lure" about murderous mermaids and "Blue is the Warmest Color" a love story between two women... one of the most captivating heart wrenching films I have seen in a long time.
The Brood is one of the very few films that scared me as a kid. One of my favourite Cronenbergs. I'm glad I'm not doing this list, there's no way I could settle on just ten titles, there's too many greats on Criterion to choose from. Anyone who likes Come & See should check out The Ascent too.
I picked up the Godzilla set and pre-ordered Raging Bull 4K. I approve to highlight The Fisher King. Love that movie! In my top 5 Gilliam films. I think it's number 4 for me, but considering 12 Monkeys and Brazil (pick up that Criterion if you haven't) are the competition, that's really good company! A 4K suggestion for me would be Menace II Society. The darkest of the early 90's hood films. The Blu-ray for Deep Cover is one not to overlook either. Really good cast with Lawrence Fishburne, Jeff Goldblum, and Charles Martin Smith.
Brazil is one of my most-wanted Criterions. If I’m not mistaken, there was actually some missing special features between their laserdisc, the Criterion DVD, and the Criterion Blu-ray. Also, Menace II Society is a must-own release. I wish Criterion and the Hughes brothers could get Dead Presidents but that’s not gonna happen.
Fisher King is a great Terry Gilliam release for sure but in my honest opinion, they did the MOST impressive job with Brazil. Also, if you're into sports documentaries you CANNOT go wrong with the "100 Years of Olympic Films" box set. It's exhaustive, excellent and pricey, so the half off sale is a good time to buy it. My only real complaint about it is they don't have any extras aside from a hardback book that's included.
Just buy the Blu-rays. Not only are they unlikely to get a Criterion 4K, but Kino’s 4Ks of Criterion titles are usually weaker in the special features department. Also, all Criterion releases command very high prices on the secondhand market.
Great video as always- I'm actually commenting for self serving purposes. I need to upgrade my movie shelves (discs only). I keep everything in a separate room- so I don't care about how it looks, basically the cheapest thing that won't fall apart will make me happy. I figured suggestions from other subscribers would be the best place to get advice (i realize building them is preferred by most, but i don't have a lot of free time away from work, I'd rather buy them and use my time to watch the nearly 100 unopened blu ray/4k discs i have sitting around).
I tried to get that during a Criterion sale, and I kindly asked for a copy that hadn’t been spider-wrapped. It ended with five B&N employees grilling me as to why I needed one without the security tag, instead of the mangled one on the floor. Needless to say me and my $140 left empty-handed.
To add to your collection, I highly suggest that you buy “For all Mankind” by Al Reinert. Criterion did a 4k restoration to this classic documentary about the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. It has the actual astronauts who narrate it that makes this documentary extra special and meaningful. It has two aspect ratios, a commentary with the director and Apollo 17’s astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last man on the moon. The color is fantastic as well as the 5.1 DTS-HD surround sound. This is an excellent documentary.
@@JeffRauseo No, this was done by the director and documentarian Al Reinert, who worked for NASA. He found footage in a deep freeze film vault from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions that were never released to the public. For instance, he found excellent footage of a rocket launching on the launch pad and during the different stage separations as the astronauts went to the Moon or around the Earth. The engineers installed these cameras in case something may go wrong during a mission. The director had a chance to talk to about twenty astronauts about their experiences. As you watch the documentary, the astronauts narrate it, not television reporters. The director also found a lot of footage of mission control at Johnson Space Center during those missions. Later footage shows some astronauts goofing off while walking on the Moon, collecting Moon rocks, and riding on the Lunar Rover. Lastly, this same director helped write the script for Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" film. I think you would enjoy this documentary, especially if you are interested in space exploration. This has both the 4k and Blu-Ray discs with many special features.
The Brood is my favorite because it shows that Addiction creates this Psychological mind set that feeds off itself creating this circular environment that constantly builds to create new and worse problems and in the end he thinks he rescued his daughter only to find out it's going to repeat itself an unfortunately a truth we won't admit and only we see in the end. We represent the father in our quest to blindly fix these problems. So the true Horror is the illusion of control 🤔 Being filmed in Canada gives that extra isolated feeling Good Video 😎
Thanks for choosing some films from yesteryear! One worth checking out is French horror film "Eyes Without a Face." The story concerns a young woman disfigured in a car accident driven by her surgeon father. She is confined to her house wearing a porcelain mask. Her father's female assistant lures young women into the house and he surgically removes their faces.
My CC catalog is only 11 deep. Of your recommendations I only hv The Uninvited, which I really enjoyed. A few that I hv that I revisit annually are The Rose, Traffic, Rosemary's Baby, The Black Stallion, and The Last Emperor. Def gonna hv to pick up at least one more during this current sale. Also Jeff, this was a great video concept. This video also brought to my attention something that no other movie reviewer I've seen has. And that is your endless knowledge of cinema. Keep doing what you do because I know I'm not the only one who appreciates you. And with that said, you & your family hv a wonderful and safe 4th of July. 👊
Hi Jeff! Would it be possible for you to make a couple of videos on Criterion titles that have DVD versions, but have never been released on Blu-ray: a video on the best ones that deserve a BR release, and another on "Not sure how this title made it to Criterion?!" 🙏👍😄
I love The Hidden Fortress and M own both on Criterion blue rayI wanna hold your hand seen it alot on cable back in the day thought it was ok The Brood of course great film The Fisher King was great also I seem to love all of Gilliams films even though he always seemed to have issues while making his films and When we were kings I also own I saw this on hbo b4 i purchased it and The Uninvited seen it many times and recently on Tcm had to buy that one too awhile back and Come and See also own this film the scene where he barely escapes the burning shack wow and Lady Smowblood just purchased this last week part of my criteriin sale pick up
Thank you for these recommendations. I'm definitely going to buy a few of these. I didn't create my home theater to way the fast & furious. I live my life 1 amazing movie at a time😋
Jeff that's a great list, I added a couple to my Netflix DVD queue. I had many Criterion laserdiscs because of their superior quality. I did not buy any Criterion DVDs, I rented from Netflix. On Blu-ray I've gone with a small selection for quality (new superior transfers) and extra features: Blow-Up, Women In Love, La Piscine, War Of The Worlds, The Great Escape, Topsy-Turvy, The Breaking Point, A Hard Day's Night. I was disappointed by The Last Temptation Of Christ but apparently it's an uncorrectable source problem. I'm hoping Criterion will release When Worlds Collide.
*Be careful* with Night of the Hunter though, there is what seems to be credible info that it is going to be coming to 4K, so although it's a great movie recommendation, it might be best to hold off on buying the Criterion Blu Ray.
I would love to purchase a few Criterion Blu Rays from Terrance Malik, Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers, but I have this feeling those movies will be hitting 4k in the near future. With my luck, I'd purchase them now and Criterion will have them on 4k in 2-3 months.
I watch movies, foreign films, and read books and will see anything on WWII, and by far, the greatest movie I have ever seen and ever made was "Come and See." It is incredibly intense and hard to watch. Ever single second of that movie was action packed and intense. I could not take my eyes off of the screen. It is the ultimate WW2 movie. Go and see it...
Come and See makes Saving Private Ryan look like pop music. A very realistic and sad depiction of war. Lady Snowblood is fantastic. Also check out "House" if you want the most bizarre and fantastic movie you've ever seen. And finally, "For All Mankind" if you want a great NASA doc in 4K.
I wish they would have better sales in the UK. Not a lot of their Blu-Ray's are region free. One that is is the Ingmar Bergman collection, which I've been on the fence about ever since it released. For one it doesn't have my favorite of his, that he only wrote, not directed, Torment, for another thing I've already got a collection with restored DVD's, and many of his movies aren't really that great IMO to warrant an upgrade. But the ones that are might make the box worth it, but the shipping price always puts me off.
Some very good films in this selection! Within my own (small Criterion collection) some of mine would be: Stalker L'Avventura A Brighter Summer Day Lord of the Flies Hiroshima Mon Amor Mulholland Dr. Anti-Christ
One title I could not recommend more is Barry Lyndon, a breathtaking film by Stanley Kubrick. Not a fan of The Brood, way too OTT. Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby is more my forte. Two that really seems to be forgotten are The American Friend, a subtle German thriller with Dennis Hopper and The Hit, a British road movie thriller about two hitmen and a gangster. As for Come and See, I loathe this film, yes it is visceral, but understandably bias. Got around 100 Criterions, and now I’m importing my first Criterion 4K (Raging Bull)
Absolutely love Barry Lyndon, it's fantastic! My favourite Kubrick, I reckon. I also love Come and See, but I think a lot of that is down to the lead performance.

-Rififi (1955): Quintessential heist film with an incredible heist scene performed in total silence
-Death by Hanging (1968): Biting dark comedy satire of capital punishment in Japan and Japanese treatment of Koreans that goes to some really strange places and a totally unpredictable ending
-Twenty-Four Eyes (1954): Different kind of war film set from the perspective of an elementary school teacher in a small Japanese town before, during, and after WWII as she sees her first grade class grow up over the years as Japan becomes increasingly fascist

I figured suggestions from other subscribers would be the best place to get advice (i realize building them is preferred by most, but i don't have a lot of free time away from work, I'd rather buy them and use my time to watch the nearly 100 unopened blu ray/4k discs i have sitting around).
Great list. Thank you.
Great video as always 👍🏼
Thanks Now I need to see many of these pictures lol
Spine 1000 - Godzilla: The Showa Era Films - 1954-1975 is a must-own.
I tried to get that during a Criterion sale, and I kindly asked for a copy that hadn’t been spider-wrapped. It ended with five B&N employees grilling me as to why I needed one without the security tag, instead of the mangled one on the floor. Needless to say me and my $140 left empty-handed.
Love the Brood! Also have you seen Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood? Criterion released awhile back. It’s in my top 5 favorite films of all time.
Great picks, Jeff!
Directed by Stanley Kubrick?
@@DRaymore44 I was just joking. About the conspiracy theories out there. It does sound great - I’ve heard about it and want to own it!
Agree with Come and See... Another Soviet movie to get from Criterion is "War and Peace". Impressive cinematography and some good acting...
One worth checking out is French horror film "Eyes Without a Face."
The story concerns a young woman disfigured in a car accident driven by her surgeon father.
'The Last Emperor' is so good. I've rewatched it every 2-3 years ever since it came out in 1987 and there's still so much there to captivate.
Hi Jeff! Would it be possible for you to make a couple of videos on Criterion titles that have DVD versions, but have never been released on Blu-ray: a video on the best ones that deserve a BR release, and another on "Not sure how this title made it to Criterion?!" 🙏👍😄
Picked up Night of the Hunter today! Interesting though as I got mine in a standard case-looks like you have the boxed packaging?
Yeah I got the original digipack packaging
I also only got the standard case, but that’s fine cuz I really didn’t like the movie anyway. Did you?
@@spiritphotography101 yes! Seen it twice since I got it, absolutely adored everything about it
I love The Hidden Fortress and M own both on Criterion blue rayI wanna hold your hand seen it alot on cable back in the day thought it was ok The Brood of course great film The Fisher King was great also I seem to love all of Gilliams films even though he always seemed to have issues while making his films and When we were kings I also own I saw this on hbo b4 i purchased it and The Uninvited seen it many times and recently on Tcm had to buy that one too awhile back and Come and See also own this film the scene where he barely escapes the burning shack wow and Lady Smowblood just purchased this last week part of my criteriin sale pick up
Great suggestions, some I've never seen. Though not really advertised like B&N, Amazon usually cuts prices during B&N sales
Thank you for these recommendations. I'm definitely going to buy a few of these.
I didn't create my home theater to way the fast & furious.
I live my life 1 amazing movie at a time😋
Great picks. Going to wait for the eventual 4k re- release or maybe 8k?
So many essential horror films in the collection. The Innocents, Kwaidan and Night of the Living Dead come to mind.
I have collected many of david cronenberg blu ray movies. May i know what makes the brood a classic to collect?
I haven't been big on collecting Criterion movies but would like Night of the living Dead and the Police Story box set.
The Brood was my mother's favorite movie.
Dude, put some sunglasses on that Freddy.
Gotta support the people that recommended The Brood
*Be careful* with Night of the Hunter though, there is what seems to be credible info that it is going to be coming to 4K, so although it's a great movie recommendation, it might be best to hold off on buying the Criterion Blu Ray.
I’ve got when we were kings
Had it for a while
Dunno if it's a boutique label, but one of my favs is Well Go USA
Fantastic list
I love the film recommendation Videos
Thank you Jeff. 👍🏻🙏🏻
I took your advice, and got the Criterion Silence of The Lambs instead of the new 4K.
You have a flash frame of yourself pop in at around 10:56 I almost jumped cause I didn't expect you to pop in during the film scene 😨
Lol, that was unintentional. If Freddy would’ve been there it would’ve been funnier.
I'm assuming that you haven't watched 'A Hard Day's Night' all the way through, as there are issues with the 4k disc.
I don’t have the 4K. I’ve watched it all the way through several times
great shirt!
Watched Navjo Joe the other day loved it
The Ascent 1977 is also a great film! Highly recommended
This just reminded me, the Eclipse line, which are “never coming to Blu-ray.” Someone will bring them to Blu-ray or 4K now, guaranteed.
Some very good films in this selection!
Within my own (small Criterion collection) some of mine would be:
Stalker
L'Avventura
A Brighter Summer Day
Lord of the Flies
Hiroshima Mon Amor
Mulholland Dr.
Anti-Christ
Have you seen Cats Eye? It's releasing on 4K in AUSTRALIA at JB HIFI
Yes great Stephen King movie
