Remember... This band did NOT release a video until 'One' was released off their 4th album. We didn't have all these media platforms back then ... It was video(MTV), radio(which, believe it or not, NEVER EVER EVER EVER played Metallica) and word of mouth. These dudes fought in the trenches ... Touring and converting the masses. That's why they didn't break big.... Bigger... Before. Back then you earned your fanbase or sold your soul to the industry. They took the road less traveled... And paved the way for the many. 🤘... I suggest "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" from this same album.

The structure of the song is also intentionally related to the drug. The beginning faster pace is meant to represent feining searchin thinkin incessantly about getting high. The immaculate slow 2nd part solo is THE high and the feeling the user gets. and the end picks up again to represent the come down/regret gotta do it all over again constant.

IMHO this is their greatest song. Truly a piece of art.

Others have mentioned it, but the structure of the song was imitating the cycle of drug addiction. It starts out fast and frantic...the need for a fix, then it slows and mellows as the drug takes effect. It doesn't last long, and then the song gets even more frantic as the need for drugs becomes even stronger. Iron Maiden was one of the early pioneers of metal. Metallica took that and made it more aggressive.

You asked "why did it take till their third album to get super popular?'

Iron Maiden is a British Heavy Metal band that got its start in the late-1970s, and were contemporaries with Def Leppard and Motörhead. Iron Maiden has been described as a “thinking man’s” Heavy Metal band, because of the various subjects and viewpoints displayed in their songwriting. They also had to play fast, to compete in the UK with the Punk Rock music scene there at the time. Metallica incorporated Classical music influences into their arrangements of their songs and instrumentals, which made them unique in Heavy Metal music. Bassist Cliff Burton had taken a college course in Classical Music Theory and Composition, and he made it an emphasis to incorporate what he learned into the band’s songwriting process. Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus accident in Sweden in September, 1986, when the bus hit an icy patch on the road, slid sideways, and flipped onto its side. Burton was ejected from a top bunk bed along the side window, then the bus landed on top of him. Cliff Burton was 24 years old.

A Reason why they weren't broadly accepted until the fourth album is that metal had huge amount of people pushing back against the genre even existing. You can hear all the older stuff on any classic rock station now, but hardly any radio would even touch it until like the 90s.

Gotta see them live, bro. 1991 Moscow. 1.6 million people in attendance!! Everybody does Enter Sandman but another fire song from that show is called Creeping Death.

Beauty in storytelling. So many levels of deep. All their songs are. ORION is a fave instrumental. The musical interlude in this song is representative of the High, as it goes up and comes crashing down. They are definitely fun to grow with.

The movie Old School had this song MOP when they were grabbing their pledges for a fraternity. It was hilarious 😂 !! Metallica is in their own lane! I've been a fan since 81' im 2 yrs younger than the boys, and I was 21 when Master of Puppets dropped!! It was crazy! No gimmicks or wild clothing and crap just pure Metal, thrash and lyrics that were insane! My favorite band!♥️ Been lucky to see them many times throughout 80's to present! Better live!! 🎼🤘🎸🔥🔥

Old school during the rush scene when they drive around in the black truck kidnapping all the pledges. Only movie/tv spot I can pick from memory where this was used.

One of the big reasons why Heavy/Thrash Metal didn't get airplay back then was, not only were the early-mid 80's owned by commercially-friendly, "MTV ready" New Wave and Europop bands, but also, thanks in part to certain album imagery, Heavy Metal was considered "demonic" music, and was widely vilified in the press and other mediums. This "satanic panic" led by moral majority crusaders like Tipper Gore made it hard, if not impossible, for these bands to break through into the mainstream. It wasn't until the late 80's that this started to change.

I really liked your reaction man, its so cool to see someone who dont know this song, hearing it for the first time. Read the lyics and you will understand the song and what its about. They are talking about how drugs control your life and become your master, and you will do whatever it takes to get more and more to get high. Plus its also saying that even though you maybe enjoying at first, and it might be fun, but eventually its actually laughing at you, cause its killing you at the same timesame time.
