    I have to say, I think the weirdness added to it for me. I had both of your reactions, going "is that maybe too weird?" and "wow they must have had fun writing this", but ultimately I think it works in-narrative, purely because they made nihilism the primary antagonist. When nihilism says "nothing matters, so join me in apathy", the film retorts with "actually, everything matters so much, no matter how absurd or silly or asinine you may find it, join me in caring about it". And I found that wonderful.

      I agree, the juxtaposition of 'look how ludicrous everything is!' early in the movie and the end realisation that everything is significant in some way, to someone, gives a catharsis to the ending.
      About 2/3 of the way through, I was honestly worried that they couldn't stick the landing on this movie, but they did it with great style.

      Agreed, I also think it added some comedic relief and that some things they’d go back to like the raccoon worked as a “long-joke” where it was “funny, then not so funny, then funny again” and just made me enjoy the movie so much more.

      Yes! The fact that the everything bagel = nihilism (nothing matters, you do the same old same old, go to work, do taxes, and just eat and everything bagel for breakfast) vs the googly eye = life full-filled (sticking googly eyes on literally anything immediately makes it come to life, have a personality and starts to make the world feel more alive and more fun) was an excellent - if absurdly silly - metaphor for the meaning of life that I personally adored

    The thing I loved about EEAAO that you guys sadly didn't mention was the philosophical and psychological discussion. They basically showed someone going through an existential crisis and demonstrated the two ways secular people often reconcile that - nihilism and absurdism - but did so in an easily digestible and entertaining way that was equal parts laugh-until-you-cry and then actually cry.
    Also the rock scene. God that scene was so powerful.

    For me, Racacooni was the best alternative universe. Michelle had to fix the problems she has caused in other people's "universes". She takes responsibility and actually responds to the "you've taken everything from me" line. She had ruined the lives of some people in that universe, and she met their norms and set things right. She met them on their level and she finally made something "better" instead of letting things crumble around her.
    And also, returning to Racacooni 5 times was basically saying that people's lives are not jokes. People believe in their realities, and you cant just step in and ruin what they consider to be important to them. Returning to these universes 5 times was hammering the theme that people's internal lives are as real as your own.

    I resonated with Joy the most. As a nihilist, there was a long time where I struggled with the meaning of life and the reason, or the absence of, to continue. When I get to the part of the movie where we discover what was going on and what Joy wanted to do, I was already tearing and low key crying for the rest of the movie.
    The most astonishing part of it was that when Evelyn achieved the same status as Joy, essentially understanding that nothing matters, she arrived at a different conclusion as Joy. Where Joy decided that nothing matters and therefore all should be ended, Evelyn decided that nothing matters and therefore we can do anything and everything. This was the journey that I went through, to finally decide to become Evelyn.
    What resonated with me the most was actually not at all the stuff that was discussed here, where everyone watches the same movie but see different things and arrive at different conclusion, proves that this movie truly is everything everywhere all at once.

    This was an amazing movie, most I've ever laughed and cried in the theater in my life. The absurd portions that might take others out worked perfectly with the crew I was watching with. Loved the movie. Nothing felt too weird to me in a way I could not accept and keep caring about the characters at that moment. Totally agree with Dan's take on that. It's that "this is too weird for me" that we need to overcome to truly accept someone and understand their perspective. When something is weird to me I look into myself for reasons I perceive it that way more than rejecting it on that premise.

    I can totally accept your criticisms of the too-silliness of the end. Indeed, it was grotesque and offputting, especially after the fact.
    However, in the moment, the emotional beats transcended the silliness for me.
    The experience was sublime - a molotov cocktail of emotion exploding out of me, as I smiled and snickered at the absolute absurdity, gritting teeth through a swell of tears borne of existential catharsis. I felt the purpose and the intent of the filmmakers, designed for the first-time viewer. It was great.
    Later viewings will tell a different story.

    Not sure they understood what was going on in the second part of the movie with the powers. The way they explain it is basically that if you do something incredibly improbably for you to do while wearing the headset, the multiverse basically glitches out, and you take advantage of that to borrow memories from another you. To get to a specific universe, they need to do a specific action, but doing any weird thing basically lets them jump to a random universe, that is still within their 'neighborhood' of the multiverse. Evilyn goes 'off the map' to the sausage universe because she didn't do anything weird. In the second part, they're Jacky Channing it with whatever memories they can get, and just using those skills as if they were kung foo. They aren't breaking the rules established, it's just that all the characters are desperate and throwing shit at the fan to see what sticks.

    • @minhuang8848
      @minhuang8848 2 года назад +6

      Well, seems to me like the "award" scene was a bit contrived in that sense, getting two skilled fighters at once, what are the chances? Especially since the chances are so slim for everyone BUT Evelyn; she is the one consistently skilled person outside her own universe... or whatever making something out of your life entails. They aren't necessarily breaking it, but let's just say that sphincters aren't the only thing being stretched in that scene.

    Michelle Yeoh shared how the Daniels originally had Jackie Chan in mind for the lead and met with him to pitch it and get him to do it. He said he was busy and couldn't do it. Then they reworked it to have Michelle in the lead and I think it worked really well, she did amazing. The style of fighting would fit Jackie as well though and makes sense that they wrote it with him in mind. The whole cast was great in their roles, I really liked Ke Huy Quan as the husband. He was perfect for it

    To Brando sando, as a Brando sando fando:
    I really feel like those ridiculous and emotional moments were the point of eeaao.
    The idea is to be repulsed and shocked out of the moment with the character the first time you see these moments aspects of each world. Hopefully by the end we can stay with Michelle and feel the emotions she feels as we both return to the ridiculous moments and choose kindness and empathy.
    The punctuate it with an even sillier moment because they want you to recognize that and feel the emotions anyway. I remember feeling similar to how you describe when the mustard and ketchup "ejaculation" scene happens. "Woah, that's a bit much" and then choosing to laugh and appreciate the beautiful moment of communication and committed love the bridges a protagonist and an antagonist across all multiverses.
    In the end if it didn't work for you it didn't work, but I encourage you to imagine that it is both serious and silly and feel both things at once, should you watch it again.
    Thanks!

    I have to disagree with the movie breaking its own rules for its magic system, although I will say the rules are broadly defined to make it convenient for writing. When Evelyn first verse jumps to the janitor’s closet, she not only has to do the weird thing, but also imagine herself being in the closet. So I think intent (lol) matters a lot for verse jumping.
    There are also three points (hot dog, sign spinner, and hibachi chef) where it clearly shows she is taking a shot in the dark and hoping she gains a skill that will help her, and is briefly confused about what universe she is in. She wanted a skill to slip out of handcuffs, she wanted a skill to fight at long range against a dog flail. This is my fan theory I guess, but since there are probably infinite universes where she is a hibachi chef, she happened to go to one where racaccoonie exists because she just had a conversation about it earlier and the concept was fresh in her mind. Same thing with hot dog hands, she just confessed her love for Deirdre earlier.
    The only one I can’t really explain is why both of the guys needed butt plugs lol. But that choreography was so good I couldn’t care. (Fun fact: those two guys have a RUclips channel where they do martial arts choreography!)

This movie filled the hole that I think many of us felt after seeing Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but EEAAO did it in a beautiful way that I don't think could have been accomplished in the MCU. A friend of mine saw the movie when it first came out and urged me to go into it completely blind. Other than briefly glimpsing the movie poster, I was able to prevent spoilers and it was one of the greatest gifts my friend could have given me. ETA: Also, I'd have to double check but my recollection is that it's a relatively low budget movie and they did a lot of the effects on a fairly low budget and the stunt team was very small. Stephanie Hsu said they only had one version of each outfit so it's so weird to think of how much they could achieve based on all of that.

    • @seonor
      @seonor 2 года назад +1

      They movie had a budget of 25 million. The visual effects were done during lockdown by the directors and seven other people (mostly music video directors) in their homes on their own computers - you can actually see them in the movie, one shot while the many versions of Evelyn are shown is them on a Zoom call. Most of the stunt team was credited as actors (11 or so) and the rest was credited as "additional stunt performers" to reflect that. But yes, the stunt team was pretty small.

    Posted in the old video before it was taken down, but 3 points:
    1) Star Trek: Discovery is polarizing, but I'm glad it exists if for the sole reason being to let Strange New Worlds to have been made. It's a fantastic series that harkens to the best of old-school Trek. The format is back to being an episodic and a true ensemble cast (with serialized character arcs), the acting is stellar (especially Anson Mount/Cpt. Pike and Ethan Peck/Lt. Spock), and the episodes, while not being anything groundbreaking, are well-written.
    2) Ke Huy Quan left acting because he was disappointed with the lack of role diversity for AAPI actors in Hollywood. It was thanks to the critical and commercial (western) success of Crazy Rich Asians that he decided to return to acting.
    3) I'm in complete agreement with Sanderson about feeling like the the weirdness and grossness was a bit too much, and distracted me from connecting with the messaging & emotional beats. It's the reason why I also rated the movie a 9/10. Maybe after a rewatch, when I'm less "shocked" by the absurdity, I can appreciate the messaging more.

    Just in regards to the 'weirdness' and the 'do weird things to tap into other timelines' I saw it more as a metaphor for letting yourself live life. If you never do anything at all, you end up in a world where all you're doing is Taxes and Laundry. However, if you let yourself do things, experience life, have fun, be with others, and just explore the world around you like how kids and teenagers do then sure you'll do some dumb weird ass stuff, but you also have stories to tell, you've lived a life, and you'll never even have dreamed where that life will take you.
    Experience life; live it, don't be afraid to be silly is a bit message I took away from the movie.

    Re: Star Trek. I'm of the opinion that we're in the Joel Schumacher era of Star Trek right now. If we can just get through it, we'll finally get someone in charge who "gets" Star Trek (I hope). Strange New Worlds is close, it's ok, but I agree that it feels like they stumbled into it and even now they still refuse to fully commit. I do really like Prodigy, though! VERY nice surprise. It feels more like Avatar: The Last Airbender, which works much better for me. There's an endgame for the season, but it doesn't dominate every moment of the show, so the characters have time to breathe and develop, and it's not dark at all. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes!

    Best part about this is that even though it's nothing but spoilers it doesn't spoil fucking anything because the movie is so random I still feel like I'd have to watch it myself to understand what the hell these guys are talking about.

    I specifically watched this movie just so I could listen to this podcast on it, lol but I'm glad I did because I also enjoyed it as a 9/10.
    The creative magic system and balance of so many multiverses was great (and FINALLY fight scenes with interesting and dynamic choreography when she uses their core wounds to pacify them with objects from the muktiverse) but funny enough I think the real reason Brandon didn't like the woman tossing the raccoon wasn't because it was undercutting the mood or anything but moreso that he loves consistent worldbulding and that literally and figuratively threw him off (distracted him as he said).
    And it does this because he loves worldbuilding and that violates some worldbuilt believability that so often can throw someone off.
    Like seeing a bear in a phone booth or whatever it was that Dan discussed in a previous episode where they don't try to hang a lantern on it and the reader is like what the hell was that?
    Sure they can explain away a lot using the multiverse zaniness (like maybe the butt plugging thing was because they were both coworkers in the alphaverse that shared a similar experience and therefore had the same Kung fu trigger) but basic stuff like hijacking a weak middle aged woman's body and suddenly tossing a guy 20 feet is obviously not possible.

    The first half of the story idea Brandon had reminded me of the Netflix show 'Sharkdog'. It's an ok kids show. It does get annoying, like all kids shows do, after the 30th or 40th rerun of your kids adamantly requesting it, but it's not the worst show my kids watch.
    Around the point the evil dolphin came into it he sorta deviated though. Lol

      Yeah, I mean there are some obvious differences, but I see where you're coming from.
      It's actually a bit surprising you don't see personalized requirements for abilities in stories more often. They're kind of an interesting limitation and they would work really well to foreshadow certain events or hint at particular character flaws.
      Pity Darker than Black isn't more popular, the premise was fairly interesting, character designs were solid, music was good, and overall the original series had a very distinctive vibe. We don't need to mention 2nd series.

    In a previous episode, Brandon said something to the effect that he doesn't like the multiverse, since it trivializes things that were high stakes. He references the Thanos storyline in the MCU as an example. In light of this, has your view of a multiverse trivializing any sing universe changed since watching this movie?

    • @robbybevard8034
      @robbybevard8034 2 года назад +6

      I imagine the difference there is, in *franchises*, the multiverse is sidestepping already existing stories you've already invested in and saying they weren't important. THis one is self contained and designed around the concept and the single message, so its a different beast.

    This move actually hit a lot of similar story points to the new movie Turning Red. I wonder why this story is resonating so well? (the parental units not letting go of their children) I kind of feel like there is this movement in cinema right now and media where "younger" generations are coming into their "positions of power" like directors and cinematographers and getting to start making media shifting the perspectives.

    • @geroni211

    I think that they missed the fact that Raccacconie was a movie, and in the universe where that movie existed was also a universe where Evelyn was an actress, that’s why she knows of Raccacconie, because she was in the movie. So the ridiculousness of her throwing him onto the truck to rescue Raccaccoonie isn’t ridiculousness in a different universe, it’s ridiculousness in a movie in a different universe. So for me it works fine.
