I think he wanted to help her....I think he believed since he had a mask and changed his voice that she would not recognize him....He felt bad that his actions caused that for her so he decided to try and help her
About the plot: When Theo finds out about Kathy cheating, he mentioned that there's no need to be a psychiatrist to understand she wanted to get caught, so same happens with him
*spoiler* I think initially he felt guilty that his plan lead to Alyssia killing her husband and he had to find out if he was really to blame or not to rid his guilty conscious. I also think subconsciously he wanted to get caught, because when the police finally came and caught him he said he felt "relief".
Yeah exactly but the thing he lost too much and if just he had done the thing Ruth told him to do which would be so hard for him .... atleast he wouldn't have to go to deep shit .
What you’re missing here is that Theo is not a normal person. He also has a dark past, trauma, he’s highly obsessive and possessive. He didn’t know at the beginning she had recognized him. She attacked him but the books explains it as a reaction to have come out of a heavy dose of medication she was on for a very long time due to her being aggressive with the staff. He realizes it when she start talking and tell his her version of the story. Then he knows that since he obviously didn’t kill Gabriel but heard the gunshots after leaving, it must have been Alicia. Then he knows
this book had me on edge the whole time. it just had me keep guessing who could it be and proving me wrong everytime I was sure of someone. it was a fantastic journey. i do agree that many of the side characters were introduced unnecessarily, but all in all it's one of my 5 star reads! great review!!
Spoiler alert. ⚠️ I think the reason why he got a job at the facility is because he wanted to get caught, at least subconsciously. We can see through the book how he's constantly thinking about her, which could be an indicator of guilty conscience. 🤔 Okay, he wanted to make sure she wouldn't say anything and went to check, which is understandable since he is guilty, but... I still think he wanted to let go of it all. As for the additional characters, they were so random and unnecessary and from the first few pages you could already tell who's to blame. 😂
that's an interesting point!! i always just thought he wanted to see if he could get away with it to kind of prove how smart he is so I never thought of it your way! and yesss agreed about the side characters lol
Theo felt guilty for ruining 3 lives, he said in the book so I think that the good part of him wanted to help Alicia, and also he was probably kind of self sabotaging because he was probably depressed because he still lost his wife. Things were never great between them. And she was just depressed and distant since her lover died. So he probably was giving up in a way.
I'm late to reading this book. I enjoyed reading it this past weekend. I like it because it kept me turning the page. However, I think the ending is a bit weird. I get why Theo wanted to help Alicia to speak again because he as a physiotherapist really wanted to help her, maybe he felt guilty about the murder 6 years ago, maybe the Alcestis painting really intrigued him, and he didn't think Alicia would recognize him anyway. What doesn't make sense is why Theo went back to Alicia's cell and killed her at the end? Alicia wrote the very last diary entry only after Theo had gone back and injected her with morphine. Had he not tried to kill her, Alicia wouldn't have any evidence to put any blame at all on Theo. I get that Theo is mentally unstable himself, so it might explain why he did what he did, but at that point he had so much care for Alicia, and knowing her having childhood trauma, he would have even more sympathy on her, so it didn't make sense that he would hurt her at the end even considering he is also mentally unstable.
Good video. Spoiler: Although I don't think Theo knows that Alicia recognized who he is from her attacking him the first time them met. Theo only knew she knew at the very end when she lied to Theo about how her husband died. This explains why Theo took the job. He wanted to help her, and he's confident that she would not recognize him. I might be wrong.
Also as for the cousin...I think rhat story was there to give us another option to play with in our minds while reading. I know for me there was a point where I thought maybe the cousin was messing with her because he needed money and wanted her to go crazy or was planning to kill her to get inheritance from her...So I see the point of the cousin
I think his role also is to further make her feel like an isolated and abandoned person that led her to the silent patient she was in the pyschiatric unit with violent tendencies when triggered. Paul was someone close to her that would go on the roof of the house to avoid her parents and aunt. Paul has always been stuck being 8 years old under the care and scrutiny of her aunt Lydia. When Paul plead Alicia for money after gambling it away, and seeming disappointed she only gave 2k instead of 20k, she probably felt like there was no one in her life she could rely and trust on, only Gabriel the sweet loving dependable guy. Him cheating on her and chosing her to die instead of him was like the nail that hit the coffin, he had killed her like her father metaphorically killing after he said he would rather have alicia killed instead of her mother. Alicia had lost all faith in humanity.
Spoiler Valid point on the plot could've easily not happen at all. That's why this book in the core is about portraying and losing yourself along the way in the patient. Theo is convinced he does the right things still solely for Alicia. Instead he did it to battle his own ego/issues/trauma's. You can sometimes see this red line throughout the book, but it only got really clear on the last couple of pages ofc.
I feel like this is one of those where the murderer is narcissistic and wanted to go back to his crime to taunt her. And to get clarification that she knew who he was and that he knew only he could get her to talk as if he was bragging all along. I know he didn’t intend her to kill him but still she did and I think he was happy with that as Kathy was then his again, she did his dirty work so he didn’t have too.
Just finished reading this book and while I was completely drawn in by the book, I agree with a lot of your points. A lot of side characters got introduced that didn’t have much to add to the plot, but every one of those characters did Alicia wrong in some way. Too many red herrings and it didn’t make sense.

I honestly dont even know how to feel... I was in a reading slump while reading this.. I feel like it would have been a better experience if I would have read it in a shorter period of time. I loved the final part of the story... I felt like the first 3/4 were drawn out and a little boring. I was FIGHTING to get through this book... I didn't see the twist coming either. The twist alone made this a decent book.
Spoiler Maybe i'm more emphatetic to the people who experience trauma. But i connected more with Alicia/ Theo. And despite him being wrong for his actions. I think the initial reason he had for breaking into Alicia's house was to help her understand her husband is a bad man. I feel bad that Alicia is in the hospital. But i am a little mad that Kathy was not confronted by theo. I GUESS her losing her lover and remaining in a loveless marriage < you can say> was punishment enough. But I'm more mad with Kathy and other husband, than Alicia and Theo- despite later characters doing a lot worse things due to their traumatic reactions.
Also ! The way the staff at the facility seems to be treating their patients ( alicia)- rude/ disrespect- made me feel they were not fit to work in a psychiatric hospital. Thoughts??
Great review... Consider these two books International Bestseller 📚 Higher Is Calling & Just eat the worm by Maxwell Adekoje for personal development. Happy New Year 🎊
I enjoyed the writing style very much as well. I did see the twist coming though. Theo gave off red flags to much for me. Theo's reason for becoming Alicia's therapist was not smart for him as he could have gotten away with it but I guess curiosity did him in. Thank you I enjoyed your review.
Can’t believe how people love this book. I think they get paid to hype it THAT MUCH😂💔.The book was really boring. TO ME as a thriller it was slow. The characters weren’t interesting at all. Only the twist was worth mentioning. Don’t know why this book is famous. This is the first thriller novel I have read that written by a man. Perhaps well be the last time.
Spoiler warning To your last thought, I feel like the only logical answers I have as to why he accepted the job and tried to get Alicia to talk was out of a guilty conscience I feel like he felt remorse about how things played out because his intention wasn't to get Gabriel killed maybe he wanted some type of closure or to understand why she murdered him to clear his consciousness or maybe it was simply because he got a kick out of messing with Alicia's mind Or maybe because he wanted to get caught considering he felt releaved at the end of the book. Ether way it's obvious there's something wrong with Theo
I read the book and I was pretty annoyed. The story was a lie and not a thriller. All this time, we were thinking that the two parts are happening consecutively but they weren't. Stupid book.
It was not a lie. It was manipulation. We ourselves believed Theo’s story was congruent with Alicia’s. Happening at once. But that was unconscious, no one told us that was the case. Thats what makes this book so incredible. We believed it without being told to do so, without second guessing. Thats what made the plot twist so mind blowing.
@@kiaravictoriano578 idk i just feel bad for him. The guy was just living his life until he found out that his wife was cheating on him. Just think from his perspective of what he felt. He didn't knew what Alicia was already going through and he did all that in the heat of the moment. And that's what I think. He later felt guilty which we find out later. But in the end got caught which he knew someday he would be. All this was caused by his wife and she didn't have a single punishment throughout the book. That's the sad part. Only Theo and Alicia went through shit.
@@kiaravictoriano578his wife cheated on him then he killed the man to keep her for himself but she got depressed because her lover got killed and then he felt like it’s pointless
I get that his wife got depressed cuz her lover died. But I still feel annoyed with her. Everything could have been avoided if Kathy and Alicia's husband just divorced, instead of sneaking around like teenagers. Not realizing how much it probably messed up their partners... idk
I think he wanted to help her....I think he believed since he had a mask and changed his voice that she would not recognize him....He felt bad that his actions caused that for her so he decided to try and help her
About the plot: When Theo finds out about Kathy cheating, he mentioned that there's no need to be a psychiatrist to understand she wanted to get caught, so same happens with him
That's interesting, especially as at the very end of the book Theo says he felt so relieved when the inspector knew it was him that had killed Alicia.

I love when I can predict some of the plot twists. But I don’t like TSP’s plot twists. I was like “I knew it! But, that’s it? Oh. Ok.”
yes i agree!!
Samee , I also kinda guessed the main culprit was Theo in the middle of the story

Hello I’m here for the spoiler free part can’t wait :) I wanna read this so badly
Now I wanna read it and see if I guess the twist
you should read it!!! and i want to see if you can guess it hahah
I read it but I’m still confused about the ending can someone explain the plot twists to me😭
Theo was the man that Alicia was seeing out her window. He didn't kill either of them... Theo's wife was having an affair with Alicia's husband.
Can someone explain why Theo took extra time out of work to speak to these other people as I don’t understand it. Thanks.
