  • Master violinmaking is more personal than most imagine, and when it comes to Stradivarius and Guarnerius this is as personal as it gets.

    I built my first fiddle from thin plywood and wood blocks. I fixed the neck on with screw. Maybe he was looking over my shoulder.

      My grandfather made his first violin out of cigar boxes, and my first violin almost looked like I did = we just might be kindred spirits. :)

    Good Day Kevin . Very important information . I was wondering if there are any Stradivarius violins with the original neck ? I think the extended neck modes were done after 1860 ?
    I hope your own neck is healing well ? You sound in good form by the tone of your voice . Funny how the violin made properly , ages better than us mere mortals ? Thank you for your passion and devotion to detail . May Christ bless you and your wife to have many more years of violin making and musical delights . JayBird

      There are a number of Stradivarius violins with their original necks that had the "extension" style of operation done, like "The Harrison," "The Lady Blunt", etc.. Also, violins like the "Gould" at The Metropolitan that have been retrofitted back. I am only aware of two violin that are completely original like the viola shown in the video, and someday I hope to be allowed to photograph them.

      Your message was cut off so P.S.
      While most of the necks had been replaced by 1860, there were still quite a few neck grafts done after that. Some neck grafts being performed a second time because of evolving standards and broken peg boxes, etc.. And yes.. Oh to age as well as a fine violin! Amen, and may Christ's blessings be upon you. (I don't claim to be a saint, but I did become an ordained minister in order to perform marriages.) :)

      In 1729 G.F.Handel travelled to Italy to hire singers and commission a violin from Stradivarius . For the second ' Royal Academy of Music ' . The violin by Stradivarius was the real 1732 Red Diamond ' Louis von Spencer ' . It was paid for by Lady Sara Churchill / Duchess of Marlborough with the 100,000 pound dowery to marry her Grand Daughter Lady Diana Spencer to the new Prince of Wales Fredrick Louis von Hanover , hence ' Louis von Spencer ' listed in Wikipedia . King George II and PM Walpol put a stop the the marriage as Lady Sara was doing all this in secret . Lady Diana Spencer lived next door to G.F.Handel , she loved music and was very close friends with Handel . The opening of the Royal Academy of Music in 1732 was ' Esther' the 17 th Book of the Bible . Handel used this violin to compose and perform 'Messiah ' in 1749 for the opening of the Foundling Hospital in London . Handel died in 1759 , at age 22 King George III became King in 1760 and would have inherited this violin . An 8 year old W.A.Mozart played for King George III and Queen Charlotte in April 1764 . Maybe he played Handel's violin ? The Red Diamond that has a label in three pieces and was in the Ocean for two days that is part of the Nippon Foundation and listed with Tarisio is NOT CORRECT as they have no knowledge of anything prior to 1860 . So what happened to the real 1732 Lady Diana Spencer / Stradivarius ? Any ideas ? @@kevinleeluthier

    Dear Master, if i may ask; is there a reason for the nail holes being arranged unevenly? I hope you will live a blessed 2024a

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  6 месяцев назад +4

      To reduce the risk of splitting the heel of the neck when driving the nails in. If the top two nails were even, they would be in the same grain line. Thank you for watching and asking, and I wish you to have the same "blessed new year!"

    @kevinleeluthier: A wonderful video and idea to 'give credit where credit is due'. If I may ask quick question? What sort of maple is used in (on?) the violin back in this video? It has a close resemblance to the back of my violin. Is it Balkan maple (sometimes, I believe called 'large leaf maple')? And, of course: Happy New Year! All the best in 2024!

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  6 месяцев назад +3

      Here's some controversy for you that I will have to pursue in a future video: Though this back isn't the deepest or most "gorgeous" slab flamed maple from this area, it is wonderful artistically and acoustically, and it came from a tree in the same obscure pocket of the woods in Canada where two independent geneticists verified that Stradivari obtained some of his finest maple. The tree was cut in 1995 and it has hung from my ceiling ever since. Always small leaf maple, and unbelievably rare and expensive, especially from Canada since so few trees worthy of becoming master violins grow in that country. None that I know of in the U.S.. I do love Balkan maple and that would more often be my answer, but you happen to ask about this particular back. :)
      I hope this answer wasn't overkill. Happy New Year! Thanks for watching!
