    Maker’s Mark No. 46 is a great choice, in my opinion. It’s currently my favorite wheater. Overall, I think it tastes significantly better than the standard Maker’s Mark, and I find it has a softer and more pleasant finish, which should be good for a beginner.

    Nice video! I appreciate the time stamps in the description. I can get the gist without spending the full 20 minutes. I totally agree on the Basil Hayden's. I think it's delicious if I'm in the mood for an 80 proofer, which is often. The rest of my list would be Evan Williams Black Label, Eagle Rare or Buffalo Trace, Larceny and Evan Williams White Label or Wild Turkey 101. I tried Four Roses SiB and Rare Breed when I got started with bourbon and found them just too hot to enjoy. I love them now but I don't think they are good choices for a beginner. But that's just me...

      Definitely some solid recs there Fred. Most lists include them and BT/ER can be tough to find here and in many markets, so we purposefully left those out, but they’re hard to go wrong with.
      On our typical filming we like for folks to feel like they’re sitting in our home with us and enjoying a pour as we discuss a topic or do a tasting, but for lists like this time stamps will always be there (and we’ve got some fun lists coming up 😉). Basil Hayden and Blanton's were my gateway bourbons that brought me over from Scotch and Irish whiskeys. This was when Blanton's was readily available and $50. I see both sides of the Basil "controversy". It is an excellent beginner bourbon. Even as a seasoned bourbon drinker now, I can appreciate it. I am also a beer enthusiast, and I equate Basil to a good Pilsner. Sure it might not pack all the flavor of an IPA or a porter, but sometimes you just want something light and easy.
    That said, Basil Hayden is dramatically overpriced for what it is (age, proof point, etc). The price is artificially set high to appeal to the "upmarket". When it was one of my gateways, I was able to routinely get it from my military Class Six store for $25 for 750ml.
    Overall, I really like your list and agree with it mostly. The Four Roses SB is a great "step up".
    I LOVE Rare Breed, but I'm not sure I'd go there for a beginner. I might substitute Eagle Rare. But if you want to do a step up in proof, Rare Breed is a great way to go!

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 года назад +1

      Great input John! We’ll agree with pretty much all of it and add that Basil Hayden at $25 is a steal! The Pilsner analogy is especially fantastic and hits the nail right on the head. Cheers!

    Another great video. I have not tried the Evan WIlliams but like the ECSB which you compared it to and also have not tried the Rare Breed and I agree with your list and like the idea of the progression. If I would have tried any of your first 4 25-30 years ago I would have drank a lot more bourbon and less Crown Royal by now. Still would drink CR on occassion because I do like it but these bourbons are all great. IMO if someone were to try your first 4 in order with the ECSB at #2 and did not like any by the time they got to #4 they might want to think about being done with bourbon and try something else.
    I did notice when you said Basil Hayden she said why in a way that she thinks you are crazy. I wonder if she agrees with your list.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 года назад

      Great points all around! And we were on the same page with the list but that's a great catch. We always try to include a "why" behind everything we discuss. Speaking to the "why" is so much more informative than simply saying whether we do or don't like something. We hope to always touch on the "why" so you can decide whether our "why" aligns with your own, and hopefully whether or suggestions on a specific bottle are helpful to you or not. Keen eye, Glock!

    As someone who started drinking bourbon seriously a few months ago, I wish I had seen this video then. It's a really thoughtful approach. In a roundabout way, I wound up owning each of the bottles listed above. I started with Basil Hayden myself and...HATED it. So, I wouldn't start with that myself but the rest of the bottles mentioned I agree 100% for a beginner. What really kicked off my journey was EH Taylor small batch after visiting BT distillery. If asked, I would probably recommend 1783 or 1792 small batch instead of the BH or maybe a Russell's 10 year (it's a higher proof but they don't drink like it) for a beginner. The advice I would give is to find a proof range you enjoy. You do have to note that some higher proofs drink hotter than others. For example, OF 1920 doesn't drink too hot. My mistake was that I listened to too many RUclipsrs advice and wound up with some great bottles but were too hot for me as a beginner. Next thing I knew I had a shelf of high proof and cask strength stuff burning a hole in my soul! Wild Turkey Rare Breed is awesomeness. I would max out at 100 proof just starting out. Keep up the good work!

    • @stuffandwhiskey

      Great comment Victor! Glad you enjoyed the video and we think 1783 would be a great starter ourselves. We hadn't yet gotten into that when we filmed this but if we had it to do over again, we think it's a great place to get going. We love your comment so much as it highlights how important it is to contextualize the feedback you hear about a pour, and your comment is a good reminder for us to always speak to who the pours are for. Cheers and thanks for watching!

      Maker's Cask Strength is one we do enjoy, although we're not sure if we'll rebuy as long as Maker's 46 Cask Strength is available. That said, wheated bourbons aren't our favorite profile. We tend to like a little more spice.

    ahh the good ol days when the Evan William's Single Barrels were available in stores. By me they're gone so I'd replace that with Evan Williams 1783. At first I didn't like the Basil Hayden's due to the 80 proof BUT a beginner should know what 80 proof Bourbon tastes like. I like the higher proof picks to round out the bunch. Just in case if those are too high of a proof maybe the 4 Roses Small Batch would be better. A beginner Bourbon that I enjoy that is super readily available is Bulleit or Elijah Craig. At $30 you can't go wrong imo.

Took forever for me to finish the 1783 I had, and the BIB will also linger or be a great option for guest cocktails. I introduce scotch drinkers to bourbon with Basil Hayden, and I'm undefeated at turning them into bourbon drinkers. I realized I like the Makers 46 more than I remembered. Welcome aboard, Kevin! Curious if the 1783 you had was the older 86 proof offering or the newer 90 proof offering? We find the older variant to be pretty lackluster but the new 90 proof offering brings a rounder profile and more fruitiness to the mix which we do enjoy. And well said on Maker's 46. I have a bottle of Basil Hayden. I use it to top off my infinity bottle. I can't see that it's significantly different from Jim Beam white. I'd recommend Knob Creek 9 instead, which costs less and is a ton better. I grant that at 100 proof the Knob Creek might be too hot for a beginner, but you can always proof it down.
    I have to confess this looks to me more like a list of personal favorites than a list of good bourbons for beginners. And the two aren't the same, at least not for me. If I were to make a list of the five bourbons I'd recommend to beginners, it would be different from my list of my five favorites.
    I have episodes planned for those two lists, but it'll be weeks before they appear. I didn't realize, when I first began the Whisky For Beginners channel, just how much basic information I hadn't been able to find in one place. If I had, it might have scared me off. 😂

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  Год назад +1

      Fair points, although we wouldn’t call these personal favorites. They’re on our list as we’ve found them to be pours that newcomers enjoy when we’ve shared these particular bottles with them. Pretty much everything we cover is informed by real world experience, and we always try to speak to the “why” behind including any product on any list.

    The prices for these bottles are really throwing me off. When I think beginner friendly bourbons, I try to consider price as well. Maybe it is just the crowds I am in, but people kind of gawk at anything over $30, and all of those are over $30 in our market. Evan Williams SiB recently jumped over that line.
    Price of whiskey I find is a high barrier to entry into the whiskey community and I don't want people to think that you must spend "a lot" of money to get started.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  Год назад +1

      Those are fair points for sure. Would have to rewatch but think we covered our take in the video in that we feel the slightly higher price of these products gets folks a significant jump in quality over a lot of truly budget bottles, which we think in turn makes it easier for people to get into bourbon. The 375ml Basil Hayden, Maker’s 46, and at the time of this filming the Evan Williams SiB (before it became a KY only release) were all $29.99 or less in our market and we feel Four Roses SiB and Rare Breed are worth $40 and $50 respectively. That said, we’re due for a “5 Best Budget Bourbons for Beginners” list. Cheers and thanks so much for watching and commenting Thrifty Whiskey!

    I disagree on Basil Hayden. Buy Old Grand Dad bonded and add water. It’s the same high rye mash bill from Jim Beam at half the price…plus OGD has enough proof to make a cocktail if you choose.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 года назад

      Fair point Todd. To be fair as well, Basil Hayden is reportedly aged for 8 years compared to OGD Bonded 4 years, so while we do lean toward the proof of OGD Bonded ourselves, we still stand by the age and subsequent “rounder” profile of Basil Hayden being the better “premium beginner bourbon” as it were (despite the same mashbill).

    • @toddsuter3783
      @toddsuter3783 2 года назад

      Well, BH lost that 8 year age statement in 2014 so who knows for sure...and how much character remains at 80proof. I agree that BH is a “beginners” bourbon, but I also think (in good conscience) it’s important to educate beginners about value, that way they aren’t being primarily seduced by marketing.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 года назад

      @@toddsuter3783 again very fair points. Wish we had a device to proof whiskey in real time. OGD Bonded proofed down to 80 vs Basil Hayden would make a fascinating entry into our double blind head-to-head pool. Maybe we’ll spring for a proofing solution on Amazon and get that in.

    • @toddsuter3783
      @toddsuter3783 2 года назад

      That would be an interesting comparison. You shouldn’t need a proofing machine though. A digital kitchen scale and some math should get you there. P1 x V1 = P2 x V2-> so, an initial 1.6oz, 100p OGD + 0.4oz water should be close to a final 2oz, 80p pour.

    To save money and not find out you screwed yourself over by buying a bottle that you didn't like for close to 50 dollars, I would suggest you find a liquor retailer that sells the 50ml and 375ml bottles of all the bottles you want to taste. If you are actually dropping more than 40 dollars on a bourbon, I would probably risk buying a Rare Breed, Eagle Rare, Russell's Reserve 10 year, or Smoke Wagon Small Batch in order to let yourself taste much more premium bourbon that most people consider top notch without breaking the bank. And if you find you don't like it, I don't think there are many people that wouldn't consider taking the bottle off your hands.

    • @stuffandwhiskey

      Great point! A lot of what we want to try isn’t available in smaller bottles so we do share and trade samples a lot as well. That can be a great way to try a lot of whiskey before you buy as well, whether it be local trades or an online community.

      We've long thought the same thing, however Bourbon Pursuit had a discussion about this recently and their intel directly from Beam said that Old Grand Dad has its own unique mashbill. While we're doubtful about that, Basil Hayden is definitely aged longer than OGD, which combined with the low proof makes it a good intro pour for beginners, but on pure value alone we're right there with you. Completely disagree with your selections, at least for beginners. I'd have to put Buffalo Trace in there, even tho I hate it, Old Forester 86 proof would have to be on the list, Russell's Reserve 10yr over Rare Breed and its cheaper. I cant really recommend a good wheated bourbon because I have hated every one I've tried. I'd prob also throw Woodford Reserve in there somewhere, i havent had anything from them other than the Double Oaked, but its in my top 3 bourbons overall.
    For ryes, at least for people familiar with bourbon, I'd highly recommend anything from Sagamore Spirits. Their Double Oak Rye is my #1 whiskey, period. Beats out all of the bourbons I like and I'm not typically a big fan of straight ryes.
