I prefer to go a different direction. Higher proof value pours that can stand up to some ice. 100 proof BIB whiskeys that don't break the bank are a good go to. Pikesville Rye on the rocks, Early Times BIB, New Riff, Makers Barrel proof. No shame in whiskey on the rocks! Great video as always.
My tendencies lean toward beer in the summer, but I will throw in an Irish whiskey like Redbreast 12, Green Spot, Powers John's Lane 12 or a lighter fruity scotch like Arran 10. Every now and then a bourbon will be thrown into the mix that is low proof and sweet. For me a beer is more refreshing when it's hot and we are gilling and hanging out at the pool. Something about 118 degree heat and whisk(e)y don't mix well. Hey...did you see that my Brother In Law and I won a Reserve Grand Champion at a KCBS event in Norco California over this past weekend? Ribs took 1st place and chicken was in 5th. Not bad for our 2nd event ever. Cheers!
Truth be told the lighter, fruitier whisk(e)ys like Irish and Scotch are a lot easier to handle in the summer. We may just have to make that video too as some international content is coming back! 😉 Cheers and congrats on the big win! Huge bbq fans here and I love to put in some time on the grill/smoker. We need to compare notes!
Pulled the trigger on the Hard Truth High Road Rye (already have their bourbon and sweet mash rye) - it is great! Definitely a nice summer sipper - easy to drink casually, great flavor. I passed on it once before - glad you pushed me to go back for it!
As always, enjoyed the video, you two always put a smile on my face. Now that I drink 100+ proof neat as my everyday sipper, anything less seems almost like water too me, however I will try some of the ones you recommended today.
I was chatting with the new kid on the Whiskey Raiders channel when she made this very prompt earlier this week. For me the first bottle to come to mind was Barrell Seagrass. Look forward to meeting y’all at the BFH thing in a few weeks. David S.
Glad to see the Old Forester Signature. One of my favorite daily sippers. When I saw this I decided to pick up a bottle of the Rye as well. You use a lot of fancy words to describe them. I have always thought of Old Forester Signature as a randy teenager that hasn't learned how to French kiss yet. It is a little wild on the tongue but it is not unpleasant. :)
Wild turkey 101 on the rocks or 1792 are my summer go to bourbons. But to be honest, I drink less bourbon in the summer time, either I go G&T, beer or sometimes a scotch like a Glencadam 10 or a Craigellachie 13.
Jim Beam 7 is pretty good, Old Forester 1910 is 93 proof and it’s really good. Love Buffalo Trace, but I have a hard time finding it and I’ve never seen an Eagle Rare.
Another fun episode that me smile several times. I really enjoyed your perspective on these. I do enjoy the OF rye as easy summer bbq sipper. I always put it in a titanium flask because I always felt a little funny bringing such an inexpensive bottle over to someone’s house. There’s a lot of whiskey snobs out there you know. This was a real great episode thank you both for all the wonderful contact
I regret avoiding JDSB when starting my bourbon journey... Now I love it, but the barrel proof rye is easily one of my favorites - it goes toe to toe with the best out there.
It's much lighter, of course, but definitely still has the Buffalo Trace mashbill #1 just like Buffalo Trace, E.H. Taylor, and Stagg, so it still has plenty of sweet flavors.
The Bonded is closer in flavor to the Full Proof than the Top Floor... at least that has been my experience. The Top Floor and the Small Batch fell flat for me.... but I really enjoy the FP, SiB, and Bonded.
@@stuffandwhiskey Ha! I am blessed to live so close. Being a fairly new whiskey drinker, I didn’t realize how good Hard Truth’s stuff was. I bought a bottle of High Road Rye and wasn’t that impressed after my first taste. I tried it again after a week and my opinion changed. So much flavor for the price! Love your videos! Thank you both for all you do! Meet me at Hard Truth some day :)
2nd comment on this vid, that JD freakin’ rocks, and it is awesome all the freakin’ time, no matter what the temp is outside. Oh, and if you are not a Patreon you should be because your bar will benefit from these picks. I nominate Josh and Erin for whiskey duo of the year, an award that does not exist, but I appreciate these people so much I am stumpin’ for ‘em lol. Support this couple you’all, content is solid, consistent, honest and real. And access to the picks are just the topping on the cake.
Great video! Always enjoy yall's stuff. Michter's regular (not Barrel strength) rye is a nice one to sip on the porch/patio in the evening in the Summer and its readily available. Maybe a little less available and slightly more $ is the recently released Bulleit 12 year rye. Low proof, orange marmalade bomb IMO.
Nice topic! I was in Nashville for 3 days, and thought of you guys. CMA awards time!! Crazy. If I were a Patreon member, I'd reached out. I will join, however. Promise. Went to a few quality liquor stores while in town. I really liked Frugal MacDougal, made friends with the staff there. Super friendly and helpful. Especially William!!! Raising a Glencairn for William right now! 😂 Got my first bottle of Ben Holladay, 7 year. Fantastic!! I picked uo a Jack store pick with William's help, but haven't opened it yet. Upcoming.... Anyway, great content. Love watching your videos. And, I have to ask: do you mind disclosing a "wrist check"? Two of my passions, bourbon and watches. 😅 Thanks for being who you are. KP from NC
That’s awesome Kurt! Frugal is a Nashville staple and William is awesome for sure. Glad you had a great time and thanks so much for the kind words! Cheers!
Bought a .750 Benchmark Top Floor at a local grocery store on sale for around $13 then stopped by the nearby Walmart on a whim and they had the .750 Buffalo Trace for under $24. Picked it up and did a blind taste with the two. Buffalo Trace won but it was so close it was virtually a tie. I find both to be inoffensive. Just smooth simple bourbons. Personally I like most rye whiskeys better for their complexity.
Alcohol/ethanol can and does make a lot of people sweat, so naturally, if you're already sitting out in the heat/sun already sweating a bit, it's just a little more wise and comfortable to find something lower proof or at least something that doesn't present much ethanol/alcohol burn/heat that doesn't continue adding to the sweatiness.
I also like the Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare when I can find it, however, I'm also a big fan of Russell's Reserve 10yr, Old Foster 1910, Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond, and 1792 Bottled in Bond. Cooper's Craft and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is not necessarily ignored either. Great show as always! Cheers!
For me Benchmark Top Floor is impossible to get in Oregon, I mail ordered one and am blown away how good it is! I can get Eagle Rare somewhat easy for $39. But I prefer Bowman small batch over Eagle Rare. Buffalo Trace is $28 and readily available and Bowman is $36 here, would much rather get Bowman.
missing the international wiskey videos. What are you enjoying on that front lately? I have went through a couple different releases from Kilchomen (Sanaig and one other)that were very good
Funny you should say that about international offerings. They're making a return. The old Wildcard Wednesday pool and Monday's Pours Unknown pool have been combined. Stay tuned!
Another fine video. I haven't had the Bowman or the Hard Truth. And I'd add Redwood Empire's Emerald Giant Rye or their Lost Monarch "bou-rye" or Early Times BIB to the list.
Where I live, seasons aren't really a thing, so I've never thought about varying what I drink depending on the time of year. I mostly stay inside with the blinds shut tight anyway, so on some days, I don't even know what the conditions are like outside. (I don't like sunshine or bright light.) There are days when I prefer lighter stuff, and I suppose that is what falls into the "summer sipper" category. Easy going Irish, Scotch, or Japanese whisky would seem to be good options. Green Spot, Redbreast 12 or 15, Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie, Bunnahabhain 12 (or 18 if you want to spend a fortune), Arran 10, Suntory Toki, or Nikka Coffey Grain would all be good choices. Suntory Toki, in particular, is a great rocks pour. Mexican corn whisky is another option; the ones I've tried have been well balanced and relatively light. Sierra Norte and Abasolo are good. Or if you really want a drink that is stereotypically associated with summer, just grab some rum or cachaça. The ones from French-speaking and Spanish-speaking countries and Brazil tend to be lighter in style than the rich, funky ones from English-speaking countries. If I didn't absolutely hate sitting out in the sun, I could imagine sitting out with a nice glass of Haitian rum. Maybe I can talk myself into doing that on a cloudy day or after dark.
I'm good with most of this list, but I personally wouldn't include Eagle Rare here just for the fact that it's 10 years old and has some complexity to it that I like to focus on rather than just pouring it over some ice with a group of people and sipping on it without really thinking about it.
Though I don't drink seasonally iim a sun worshipper and the hotter the better I'm okay sipping on 123-140 anytime of the year. Been around the sun quite a few times and have built up a serious tolerance to both heat and proof. But I do keep many light bottles on hand for those that mix and don't like proof. It's just what a good host does. Great list for sure I'm hoping Ohio pulls their head out and picks up Hard Truth. Would be a very popular choice. Enjoy!!
Aaahem. Hate to be a stickler for details….. butttt… that JD SiB is an ERIN pick. Josh wanted #2. Which was CLEARLY wrong 🤣🤣🤣 Love yall. Thanks again for the 24KM. It’s fantastic. Sad Chad and I didn’t follow yall to NBC.
So if I am going to get a hard truth do you think I should go with hard truth high road rye or sweet mash rye? My palette aligns with Josh's palette pretty well.
If you lean bourbon over rye, definitely grab the bourbon for an easy summer sipper. It's a solid bottle for the money. If you're choosing High Road Rye vs the higher proof Sweet Mash Rye, you really can't go wrong with either. We'd both skew to the higher proof of the Sweet Mash Rye unless we absolutely needed the lower proof of the High Road for easier sipping.
@stuffandwhiskey I have been wanting to pick up the sweet mash rye for a while and then you guys mentioned this one and I was like hmmmm maybe I need to try that one instead but I think I am going to try the sweet mash rye. Thanks
Mood whiskeys are a thing for sure! And I guess for some, seasons can impact their mood for what whiskey they want. We hear it a lot with ryes in the fall, although we think ryes are great year 'round.
That's gotta be the higher proof sweet mash products and not the 93 proof High Road Rye or 90 proof bourbon. At least we hope so. If it's the barrel proof sweet mash rye, that's a great buy. If it's the lower proof stuff, that's an easy pass.
It's one of my favorites but it's a rather bold and rich whiskey, for it's proof and budget at least, in my opinion. The Single Barrel select store picks are a little lighter and yet have some really great unique flavors.
Good call out. We do like ECBP a ton, and the small batch is solid for sure, but not one we tend to reach for in the summer heat. We tend to gravitate away from the Heaven Hill/Jim Beam profiles as the temperature rises.

JT Melleck rice whiskey. May be hard for a lot of people to get, but if you can get it it's one of the best lower proof whiskies out there.
This is on my short list. Haven't seen it near STL yet.
Yup it is awesome stuff for sure
If you can't find it Basil Hayden Toast would make for a good substitute.
We bet! It's not sold here but we have tried a cask strength pick and loved it. A lower proof variant would be awesome in the summer heat!
Pulled the trigger on the Hard Truth High Road Rye (already have their bourbon and sweet mash rye) - it is great! Definitely a nice summer sipper - easy to drink casually, great flavor. I passed on it once before - glad you pushed me to go back for it!
I drink the same things year round...my usual go toos are 13th Colony, Frey Ranch and Ben Holladay
I like four roses small batch select. Fruity and light on the palate
1792 is damn good
I’ve found myself going to cocktails more in the summer. Whiskey Sours, Ryerita’s, Whiskey Smashes, Mules etc.
Tin Cup 10 is an easy sipper (got a good deal on it). Any of the Michters US 1 series.
My two go two summer sippers would have to be early times bottled in bond and barrell seagrass.
Great list. Many of these bottles are in my collection as well. Good to know I’m prepared for the summer.
Penelope Valencia with orange peel and Luxardo cherry. Only 97 proof and sooo delicious on a hot, summer day at the pool or the beach!
Love Valencia too!

Hard Truth is amazing. Love what they're doing. Great video guys. Erin has got one beautiful smile.
Nice episode- that Jack is on my wishlist for this summer.
I've been enjoying the green river wheated. 90 proof. Not really complex. I get hints of orange peel. Nice on ice as a starter.
BIG fans of Green River! We're out of our bottle and need to replace it. It likely should've been on this list and very easily could be!
those JD Select store picks are just really good great episode
Really good and criminally underrated. We're big big fans!

Great list. I really liked Powers Irish Rye last year for my summertime sipping. Only $30. Light and fruity
Ooooooh, I didn't Power made a rye.
Went on an Alaskan Cruise with NCL. Buffalo Trace and 1792 were available in bars all over the ship.
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel is around $30 at Costco in California
I need to try that Top Floor. Benchmark recently got into my market so I've had the single barrel which I liked, and the Full Proof which I loved.
It's much lighter, of course, but definitely still has the Buffalo Trace mashbill #1 just like Buffalo Trace, E.H. Taylor, and Stagg, so it still has plenty of sweet flavors.

My wife and I run through OF 100 rye bottles. So fast. It’s so good and cheap. $26 for a 1L. Spot on how good it is in cocktails.
