    The realistic vs. idealistic conversation between Alex and Ellen actually has a double meaning, when you think about Alex and Henry's relationship. Alex is the idealistic one, whereas Henry is realistic. Mainly because the Crown has forced him into a box where that is the only way he knows how to think. It takes Alex's support and understanding for him to come to terms with the fact that he CAN have what he wants...that it IS possible...rather than just sticking to the pessimistic approach that he will be stuck in the closet his whole life.

    I love that you guys mention there having been gay royals before. In the book Alex and Henry spend a lot of their emails talking about queer historical figures, including gay kings (James I, in particular). All their emails end with quotes from famous historical love letters (usually queer). The “history, huh?” line is actually from one of their emails, in reference to that. The book is very aware of queer history and how Alex and Henry become part of that history, in a way the movie isn’t.

      Yeah - I read (heard really) the book after seeing the movie and have to say the email potion of the film is entirely to small. I understand why but it makes the enormity of the intimacy these two had and how big a breech it was much more vivid - and also it IS such a vital and romantic part of the story that I really really like the book version better. Also because some other important sideline relations have not been detailed enough in the movie ... like the Withehouse trio that later becomes "the gang", Raphael Luna ! and Bee of course. I would have liked to see more of that as well but as I said, I understand the reasons why it is difficult in the film. I can really recommend the audiobook by the way. I'm not really the demographic for this movie (old, straight/cis, white woman), and yet, in all my years, this is truly one of the most romantic movies I have ever watched (dare I say 'swooniest'?). In the special edition of the book, set a couple of years later, there is a big epilogue-like chapter from Henry's POV and it is wonderful and swoony. Hopefully, they are saving that for the sequel to this film.

    When I was watching the film and it came to Alex's speech after being outed, it struck me because of all the bullet points that it hit, like it is so real the thing of "it is queer people's choices when thwy want to come out wnd if they want to come out" and I think it's a beautiful thing to say in a film because we don't hear it often even in everyday life.
    Also the whole thing that he said about the fact that because they are famous, that does not give people the right to out them, it kinda made me thing of the whole thing that happened with Kit Connor (who plays Nick in Heartstopper) and how basically people put so much pressure on him to come out.

    In some way I think Henry thinks he's explained himself to Alex enough that Alex would know the boundaries he's set for himself and respect them. Alex crossed the line by saying 'I Love You'. Alex should understand it's now over. Hence the comment Henry makes later about 'having done nothing but explain myself this past year' when Alex is confronting him at the palace.

    • @odile8701
      @odile8701 Год назад +17

      To be fair to Henry, he literally had that talk with Alex their first ever night together, about how he “can’t afford” for Alex to fall in love with him. And he warned him, when Alex asked if he could ever belong to someone else, that he could - but only momentarily.
      I get that Alex didn’t expect to fall in love. But he can’t really claim that Henry didn’t make his own situation perfectly clear from the very beginning. That he didn’t try to tell him what he was getting into.
      Alex is just so used to be able to follow his own heart…..

    • @thegraceland1
      @thegraceland1 Год назад +9

      @@odile8701 Agree!
      This is the second time Alex has had to literally confront Henry in person to get a response. It's Henry's MO to disappear and not talk. Which I believe he's gotten away with so far. Until Alex the pushy American. I also don't think Alex could really fully understand the pressure Henry feels to suppress who he is until their heated discussion when Alex 'storms the fucking castle’. I could see the heartbreak in Alex eyes when Henry spoke about ‘not growing up with a loving supportive family’ and ‘the weight of the history on his shoulders’.

    • @Belaugh
      @Belaugh 11 месяцев назад

      There is a missing line of dialogue in the book that really should have made the film, where Henry explains himself by admitting he fell in love with Alex at first sight.....eventually hoped/thought he could have him for a little while, never have to admit he loved him, because he was certain Alex would get bored with him and drop him before that conversation had to happen as he always felt himself to be unlovable, and loving him was too big a responsibility and commitment for anyone to take on. The fact that Alex was trying to say it first put him (Henry) into a flat panic. So he ran. AS much, if not more to protect Alex more than himself @@odile8701

      I think that what some reviewers of RWRB don't get is that growing up in an environment where your every move is scrutinised, every wrong word or look is picked over in the media, and you are constantly told that you CANNOT be gay is very heavy and repressing on a young person. Prince Harry's book has shown us part of that type of pressure - he was a pre teen when his mother died and he had to walk behind her coffin in London, forced by the crown to put his grief on display for millions.
      Henry has obviously had relationships/ONS that his grandfather found out about and has been the subject of a number of disapproving lectures. So much harder for Henry to break free of the restraints.

    Thanks guys! Great conclusion to your review of a film I thoroughly enjoyed too. It is as representative and good as it is because so many people from Production, to Writing, Direction, & are LGBTQ+. And REALLY wanted to present a classic style rom-com that was funny, idealistic, romantic and entertaining. Where none of us dies, is beaten, drugged, or commits suicide! You both were as funny, charming, and endearing as expected and always! A few observations on some of your comments:
    *I do see Alex’s metaphor parallel.. but Josh is right. You REALLY have to reach for it!
    *LOTS of Gays in Texas & Oklahoma! So REALLY HAWT ONES TOO!!!
    *Josh the emails in the book are more plentiful, insightful, detailed, and raunchy than anything they could get past censors for Amazon Prime!
    *Every-tine I hear a British person say the word “Bum” I literally “Laugh Out Loud!” So thanks for that. Side note, on “Bums”: Taylor was really worried during filming his “bum” was too hairy for that shot! #Fact… 🤪
    *Josh looked like he needed an ice bath every time TZP was onscreen. Especially when shirtless! 🥵
    *Politically speaking a scenario like this would not go over AT ALL in Texas at the moment, “Where the men are men! And the Cows are NERVOUS!” That, and the fact Henry is British AND a Royal would ABSOLUTELY not be well received in Red State Bible Belt MAGA “Murica!”
    *Josh… the lube AND condoms were not forgotten. Both prominently placed and visible on the nightstands by the bed whenever Alex & Henry spent a night together. And in the book, Henry conveniently has a Travel Size container with him in his toiletry bag!
    *Nick is actually a very good Singer and the Karaoke scene was tuned to deliberately make him sound less than… perfect.
    *You two throwing shade at Henry’s bedroom… HILARIOUS! #Gay! 😂
    *It’s the Victoria (Vicky… again!) & Albert Museum at 3:40am.
    *”Cotton-eyed Joe?!”… SERIOUSLY?! 🤠
    *Miguel is 100% a BITTER JEALOUS BITCH… and we hate her! Made even more egregious because in the film (different in the book) the “Outing” was done by a member of “The Family” who knows better! 🤬
    *Alex, apparently in a version of the book which I personally have not read. There is an additional chapter which is entirely from Henry’s perspective. Giving a more British pov.
    Remembering the miracle that can only take place in Fiction that this movie is, Where the Democrat woman, with the bi-sexual, half-Mexican son, who is boinking a Royal Prince of England… wins Texas for a Presidential re-Election!” 🤣🤣🤣 #WeCanDream Thanks for the entertaining review and I am looking forward to seeing what you tackle next! 😎
