Etude No. 2 by Paul Smadbeck (performed on MalletKat by Aaron Grooves)

- Etude #2 is one of my all-time favorite marimba solos. It focuses on triple laterals, one of my favorite techniques on marimba, and super satisfying to play.
It would be an understatement to say that Paul Smadbeck is a personal hero of mine. His music opened a world of technique and possibility that transformed my approach to marimba. He has composed some of the most-performed, iconic marimba literature, and he has pushed the envelope of what's capable on this instrument.
I'm performing here on malletKat, as I do not currently own a marimba. Please enjoy!

What amazes me as a non-marimba player is the precision in spacing the mallets apart with one hand. You always amaze me Aaron.
Thanks! Definitely a challenge on this malletKat, but after a few practice sessions, starting to adjust successfully!
@@aarongrooves I just started watching your videos and it is so hard to not just be in awe of your talent.
Thanks for the wonderful music! ♥️
This guy is so talented
Yes is true
He plays every instrument including snubby js pipe things, he sings, he dances and tap dances, he plays geometry dash, he has a cool haircut, What else? Aaron you are my hero
UdieFrom1Kaway TM isn’t the snobby j thing the same note placement as the mallets and piano?
interviewer: So how many talents do you have
Aaron: *yes*
Lol underrated
Aaron , what can I say? You continue to blow me away with your otherworldly talent! I feel i like I’m not worthy to even witness your performances. But I am glad that I do!!
Thanks Mike R! I feel like I'm not worthy of your incredibly generous comments. Grateful 🙏
Marimba is such an underrated instrument

you're awesome!!
Это просто шикарно!❤️
Sounds like something from Ocarina Of Time
It actually does.
amazing
I couldn't even try to do this if I had four arms and hands ... Wow! Thank you very much!
Sounds like a 1950s flair. It was fantastic. Beautiful!
i am impressed.
Amigo te veo desde hace tiempo, y no hace falta decir que eres muy talentoso, sigue así y seguirás creciendo ✌️👌
Yes!!!
“stay home,stay safe”you too arron!
Delightful!
Your triple laterals are so clean! I had such a hard time getting them consistent in uni. Wish i still had an instrument to play so i could keep learning and practicing!
godly74 thanks! And I know what you mean. After I finished school, I had several years with no marimba playing before I got this malletkat. It's not quite the same as a marimba, but it's been super helpful!
👌
Your talent is like your hair, awesome!
Genius!
@Abigail Pak thanks!! 🙏
This... is good music. Keep up the good work.
The two thumbs down are the two keys that were not hit by the mallets.
👏
Hey something I noticed: you started youtube when i was exactly 3 years old on my birthday :D. This might be why i started my own channel this year. Your musical heart made my heart want to play guitar. That is why this channel is the best and should have 10 million subs ;)
Congrats on starting your channel! Wait, you were how many years old? It just says "when i was exactly years old on my birthday" 🤔
@@aarongrooves 3 years btw(srry i tend to type a little fast)
Omg u inspire me to do better at marimba
Your the best 😱
OMG you liked my comment im so lucky 😁
L hope doing good thxs for the music you do your great
I wish I was this good on keyboards you are a very talented individual those double strokes are like mmmmm
Oh wow, this is so good! I've never seen or heard of malletKat before, that's crazy cool. I wonder if it's more challenging to play on it since it looks like there's less room to work? (I would guess the...bounce back?...would feel different too, maybe)
He has absorbed the talent of 10 different talented people like Super Cell
Yessss!
I really aspire to be like you
No pensé que se escuchara tan bien :o
adore you 💔💖
I never knew they made qtips that big....
Why he still not popular
can you do 1 hour of note block battle
Excellent performance!! Where do your marimba samples come from? They sound great!!
This is Grand Marimba by Soniccouture. I put a link in the description :)
Great performance! I love the sound from Soniccouture too it's quite incredible! What software do you use to make the sample work?
Sry for the slow response! I use Reaper as my main D.A.W. I think reaper.fm
Violinists : My instrument sounds amazing!
Pianists: No! Mine sounds better!
Random dude: Amateurs...
Violinists: What was that, punk?!
Random dude (Aaron): AMATEURS
Cringeee
Ha! Cringe, but appreciated 🙏
Sammut Rotation 2 next!
No way! I actually tried this last night, and it was difficult on this malletkat without the luxury of bar placement options. But I think with some more work I might be able to figure it out...
yes! can i write something for you?
Can you play O Canada
Music teachers : you have to listen to the music.
Musicians : you have to feel the music.
Aaron Grooves : you have to *be* the music.
Great performance! Would you say that the Malletkat has a similar feel to a marimba? Is controlling dynamics natural or do you feel limited by the constraints of the technology?
Dynamics are a huge challenge. I had to go in and adjust several midi velocities in order to get the pianos and pianissimos soft enough. And if you play too softly, it doesn't trigger. The feel is not bad, much more rebound than a marimba, which is good in some ways and bad in others. The greatest challenge for marimba literature is that I can't utilize bar placement in the same way. This makes some literature next to impossible. But if you're considering getting one, I highly recommend it, especially if you have a nice marimba patch (it's a shame they don't come with a great marimba patch). There are some incredibly awesome things that can be done with the malletKat, especially when used as a malletKat instead of a marimba substitute. lol
I used to play Marimba in high school band. Xylophone felt too small, vibraphone felt too ringy. What does it feel like transitioning from a Marimba to this? We played with Yarn Mallets.
I would LOVE sheet music for this if anyone can refer it to me :) gonna try out for Fresno State’s indoor drum line
I bought my original from Steve Weiss: www.steveweissmusic.com/product/21925/marimba-solo
Also available at Malletech: www.mostlymarimba.com/books-a-recordings/music-books.html?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.pbv.v3.tpl&product_id=1408&category_id=894
I got to visit Fresno State once for a jazz event. Good luck with your audition!
Somebody get this man a Marimba!
Yes please! lol
omg drybones
Wow... Really amazing! Are you using an original MalletKat sound, or are you using an external VST?
Thanks so much! That marimba patch is not native to the MalletKat. There's a link to it in the description!
@@aarongrooves Sorry, I didn't see it, and thanks!!
@@tanrebcucarellosqui4321 No prob! It's actually not that obvious, I'm just realizing lol.
Posso pegar algumas musicas
N-Nani? How can one posses such power (anime Nani noises)
But seriously I can barely keep 4/4 time in my High School band but you have ascended to a higher music plane of existence
Wow, great performance and wonderful sound, last thing unexpected... 😅 Big up Aaron, amazing!!!
Just damn... @aarongrooves (which is a totally justified name) have you aver thought about making arrangements of Schubert or Schumann lieder and inviting a vocalist along for the ride?
Yes! I've actually thought about doing some Schubert with marimba and voice. I totally forgot about that idea. I love Gretchen am spinnrade. Adding that to my list. Thanks for the reminder!
It’s going to be my birthday tomorrow!
Nathan Higa Happy BDay!
AaronGrooves Thanks a lot today is my birthday
Wow these bars are sooo small! must have taken some time to adjust the mallet spacing for these small bars.
Definitely took some getting used to. But after about 3 nights of practice, my hands are starting to find octaves naturally. One benefit of the Kat is that intervals are consistent across the full range. Trying to focus on the positives :D
I first saw this guy when i watched a stickman video
*SOMEBODY GET THIS MAN A MARIMBA!*
Yes please!! 😄
Bandcamp? iTunes?
Hadn't considered that. Should I release a malletKat marimba solos album? 🤔
Likee
is this marimba supposed to give extra rebound or something?
Warum so lang kein video
Ich fange jetzt tatsächlich an, mehr zu veröffentlichen. Schau dir meine Uploads an. Und nächste Woche kommt noch eine :)
Any info on where to find a 5-octave malletkat ? Or is there an extension to their 4-octave model? Amazing playing!
There is no 5 octave model, you can get the 4 octave model with one 1 octave extension, but this is a 3 octave with two 1 octave extenders. I think it's a better idea to do it like that because you have access to a 3 octave variation which is more accurate for xylophone and glockenspiel, plus it takes up less space when you don't need the whole range. It also might help cost-wise because you can start with just buying the 3 octave, and add 1 octave extenders at a later time when you have the money for it. The only downside is that it's an extra step to set up the 5 octave situation, but it's a really minor issue.
If they did offer a 5 octave model with properly graded key sizes for a marimba, I would suggest that over this setup, but it's currently not a thing.
I ended up getting the 3 octave with the 2 extension modules. It breaks down pretty easy and fits into one hardcase for travel. www.alternatemode.com/malletkat/
They've changed the lineup since I got mine.

Percussionists stand up.
