I'm from Greece , she was presented from the start as a half-mexican cause she or her agents were afraid she wouldn't make it due to her nationality , after she became famous the truth was revealed . The truth is that in Greece these last years lots of singers use spanish titles in their songs propably for the despacito reason you mentioned . If you have time check it. There are songs like caliente , bonita and others ... Sprry I'm not gonna research but spanish titles are trendings in Greece

I just wanted to clarify some facts here, Eleni Foureira never pretended to be Spanish or speak it fluently... She did not write those songs and doesn't take credit for writing them. A lot of the Greek media would speculate about her ethnicity because of the way her stage name sounded, but she would not clarify her ethnic heritage, due to being wary of Greece's and the Greek's views on Albanian people... For the people who wrote Feguo, their first language was not English. Speaking of her ethnicity, there was an interview on a Greek talk show where she was scared to mention her true ethnicity and when she did she was met with racist backlash from the talk show host himself on TV and it STILL AIRED... A lot of Armenian people have sung songs in Greek and with terrible grammar. Does that mean they are faking their ethnicity? No, they just happen to be singing in another language terribly, this isn't exclusive to her or any American artists.

What is this world turning into? People get so easely offended that i'm afraid they will start WW3 over Eleni's songs. I agree! So many people sing in languages other than their mothertongue. Example: Rita Ora, some members of Black Eyed Peas, Multiple K-Idols who sing in Korean but are originally from Japan/China, etc. So there's absolutely nothing wrong with singing in other languages. With that said, I did think that her song was very basic, with minimal effort to include actual Spanish lyrics (not just the basic words that everybody knows), but that's just my opinion. It doesn't mean she's not talented or allowed to sing in Spanish though.

Greek fan here. I believe Eleni actually felt the need to hide her true roots in order to grow as an artist. At first she wanted to represent greece At eurovision but greece wouldnt accept her because she was born in albania, So cyprus was happy to take her.

To clarify, James is saying that she doesn’t speak Spanish and yet is singing songs in Spanish that could easily be sung in English. I mean she’s literally singing a couple words in Spanish, with a fake accent, and her grammar sucks ass.

If you knew ANYTHING about greek and spanish, you'd know the phonetics of the two are almost identical, and we spaniards love Greece and vice versa. She doesn't pretend to be spanish, but has a huge fanbase in Spain and hence pleases fans by releasing more songs in spanish. She's loved by Spain, Greece and Cyprus alike.

In my opinion , Eleni gained many fans ,especially Spanish ones, from Eurovision. She even went on tour there . So if you think about it, she's trying to please all her fans and not only the Greek ones. Also she doesn't try to hide her roots. she had many interviews telling that she's really proud about being Albanian and there's an interview with her telling the whole story about her name and how she grew up to be the woman she is today. I just want to say that you haven't done your research correctly but that's understandable because all her interviews are mostly Greek. Other than that , I liked the points that you've made in this video and I also found the video entertaining.(btw I'm Greek that's why I know so many things about Eleni)
Fuego is a great song in my opinion. Not too latino, not oriental, not balkanic, just perfect. This video is funny 😂 but if you or anyone else was hoping to get some more context, Eleni didn’t write “Fuego”; she was just the singer that ended up being the artist on it and there was at least one other artist that had sung a demo of it before deciding not to be the one to release it. (Part of why I know this is because I interviewed one of the composers of the song “Fuego”). 😆
When the song was embraced so significantly by Spanish Eurovision fans Eleni made a Spanish-language version of it. She’s also not even remotely the only one incorporating more Latin sounds/lyrics into their music (as you mentioned with your other examples).
There’s singers from Romania, Ukraine, Czech Republic doing that more now. Some have Latin heritage and others don’t. It’s absolutely getting a boost because of global music trends being more welcoming to Latin music. But if I’m not mistaken (I’d have to look it up again to be sure), the Romanian pop market has had a lot more of a Latin influence present among many of it’s releases far before THAT song came out. The singer INNA is just one example.
Back in the 2000s, a lot of Western pop artists would use samples of Eastern/Asian instrumentation in their songs. So clearly this isn’t even new for the music industry. It’s largely full of sheep that simply follow whatever trends become popularised by a few. 🐑
