Why did Susie Goodall’s Series Drogue snap?

- I thought I’d do this video just to illustrate why Susie Goodall’s drogue failed in the South Ocean and what I’ve done to improve my Jordan Series Drogue.
Note that in the video I say “speculated that Susie’s drogue snapped”.... that’s not correct. It did snap and that’s a fact and that is what lead to her being pitch piled by what must have been a freakishly big breaking wave.

@@ChasingContours No. My crew isn't arriving until late April plus I've discovered a weeping through-hull so I'm getting lifted out to get that sorted. Actually, it's unused so I'm going to remove it and glass over - one less hole in the hull!
@@sailingmoonshadow3169 will you replace it in the slings and go straight back in? I once replaced a through hull over a tide drying out against a wall! I was really concerned about not getting it done and then I finished within an hour and sat around twiddling my thumbs for the other 6 :)
@@ChasingContours I may do if I can get it over a weekend. I've done that before when I replaced my stern gland - lifted last thing on Friday put back first thing on Monday. Otherwise I'll get out into a cradle. If I'm out for a week I might just replace all the through-hulls.
It doesn’t look as though it broke at a knot in the line which failed - am I missing something ?
Lines generally break close to the knot because they have to make a sudden change in direction as they enter the knot, this bending causes significant additional strain on the outside of the bend resulting in the breakage at that point. That's why spliced lines are stronger - the line does not have to make sudden change in direction.
We build the new Sentinel-class cutters for the Coast Guard and only supply the US made sea anchor. The JSD only works for a small number of older boats designs. it can't handle the newer boat designs. Dyneema won't solve the JSD breakage issues.
Strange. There are many accounts of modern yachts of various sizes using a JSD successfully including ourselves.
Never deploy any drogue weight first (power mode). Always bridle first to flake out safely. Any tangle in the flaking must be manageable.
The problem with that method is that once you get a reasonable amount out, you have two lines, both with cones next to one another which could tangle. Then once you have over 30m out, you won’t be able to hold the line any longer. I don’t believe your method would work on a JSD. Perhaps a normal drogue but not a JSD.
I don't remember the original JSD having any knots.
I think it depends who made it. The first leader needs to attach to the bridle somehow but yes a knot doesn’t seem sensible give a splice would be stronger
Is it not possible to splice the two rope sizes together without all that mess of loops and knots?
Yes and that’s what I refer to. It should have ideally been spliced. I mention that mine was sent back to be spliced.
@@ChasingContours I thought you meant a splice to form a loop, then the loops joined with a reef knot.

Meaty.... hmm. Well we’re back on board in 5 days and heading to the Scillies. We were meant to be going to Svarlbard but that’s just not possible at the moment. So it’s the Isles of Scilly for some diving, climbing and seal snorkelling before maybe heading over to Southern Ireland.
We haven’t really done episodes before but perhaps we should try and give it a go.

You have the camera skill, the editing skill, and are very watchable - engaging, knowledgeable, not up yourself..... I think you’d be a huge success; and, if the channel grows then so can your adventures, and the causes you care about.
