Repairing an inflatable dinghy airdeck
Our Avon dinghy has Hypalon tubes but a PVC airdeck which perishes much faster than Hypalon. So unless we can repair the airdeck then then dinghy is pretty much useless. The sun has begun to cause cracks in the top with multiple hairline leaks so I decided to glue an entirely new top from one sheet of PVC.
PVC was on a 1.5m roll and bought in 25cm increments. This is from www.Ribstore.co.uk

Hike & Fly: Super Committing Cliff Launch, Slovenia

I didn't really intend for it to be a review of the wing but it kind of turned out that way. I don't have much experience of the wing just yet as I've only done about 5 hike and fly outings on it so far. But roughly speaking: - It's easy to inflate. Perhaps too easy in some wind! - Reverse launch in no wind does work. - Wing (1.6kg), harness, airbag, reserve, bag and lunch is about 4kg. - Rucks...

      Have you ever taken a hit by a boom? Or had a spinnaker pole come down from its tracks? No offence but I don’t have any intention of being left injured or swimming as the boat sails away from me. Give the roll of the boat and the forces involved trying to get a JSD back, I saw no harm in wearing my climbing helmet, which I wear when climbing the mast anyway. You wear a helmet on a high street because you’re expected to. You’re telling me not to wear one on a boat because it’s unexpected. At sea singlehanded you need to think for yourself and do what feels right or safe.

      Yeah fine although I made the mistake of inflating it to full pressure and it bubbled up. I think after a repair like this you can’t assume you’ll go to full pressure again. Never deploy any drogue weight first (power mode). Always bridle first to flake out safely. Any tangle in the flaking must be manageable.

    • @ChasingContours
      @ChasingContours 7 месяцев назад

      The problem with that method is that once you get a reasonable amount out, you have two lines, both with cones next to one another which could tangle. Then once you have over 30m out, you won’t be able to hold the line any longer. I don’t believe your method would work on a JSD. Perhaps a normal drogue but not a JSD.

  • @chriscooling4781
    @chriscooling4781 7 месяцев назад

    For any drogue, fit a trip line to retrieve easily. Trip lines DO NOT foul the rode. I retrieve my Jordan series by hand in one minute.

    • @ChasingContours
      @ChasingContours 7 месяцев назад

      How do you retrieve the trip line? If it comes back to the boat then it will foul the main rode. If you add a float then it will mean you firstly have to circle round to get it and secondly it’ll prevent the JSD sinking and performing its intended function.

    • @chriscooling4781
      @chriscooling4781 7 месяцев назад

      @@ChasingContours The trip line is fastened to the weight (no float) and runs loosely back to the cockpit. It is deployed with the rode and never tangles. I've tested this at sea. The prospect of spending 2 hours retrieving a tripless rode is a dangerous disincentive to timely deployment.

      @@ChasingContours Once off Madeira in a 1m swell. Not ideal but waiting for a big blow test.. I also tested the Ocean Brake manufacture for towing resistance. The 12m yacht / 55hp Volvo managed 2.5 knots contradicting the total brake idea (rode should be able to suspend the yacht!). I tie off the bridles securely on 2 + 2 winches without chain plates.

    • @ChasingContours
      @ChasingContours 7 месяцев назад

      @@chriscooling4781I don’t think a 1m swell will be useful for testing retrieval. After a a big blow you’ll have 4-5m non breaking waves left over. That is the scenario to test. To me you did this the hard way. On my drough. I have an extra rope attached to the ver end of the drough. This pulls the very end in first. Taking out the load of each parachute. Or alternatively you could slowly motor backwards and pull in by hand as this will also take the load out of the parachutes. As far as having a line trailing you won't hang on for long. You really need the yacht to turn up ie stop.

    • @ChasingContours
      @ChasingContours 10 месяцев назад

      Tying a trip line to a 100m series drogue doesn’t work. It’s been tried. Firstly it can tangle the drogue and parachutes and if you put a float on it then it prevents the drogue from sinking between each wave. People have also tried reversing and ended up with it in their prop. When singlehanded that would be difficult.

Which is not very often. Most is tucked away so far behind cabinets I wouldn’t be able to get to it properly. I have had dealings with them after I bought my drogue since I sent back my drogue to have the flemish loop removed and replaced with a splice since it is stronger. This was after I’d owned it for 3 years. They offered to do this free for any customer after Susie Goodall’s snapped in the southern ocean. • @ChasingContours
      @ChasingContours Год назад

      Hi Steve. That would work initially but the drag just warps alone is significant, never mind a rope with a bite and backwards cones. After perhaps 30mm it would start to pull it out by itself strongly and then you risk it snagging itself as you trailing a large bite (loop). That sounds really hazardous. You really don’t want to paying out anything in case something gets trapped. You want to throw it over and get clear of it entirely. If it’s flaked into a bag carefully it will come out clean every time.

    Leaving a small air gap is key (even 3 to 4 mm will do it). It´s not so much about the thickness of the layers but about the number of air gaps between layers. That secondary glazing film is really thin but it follows that principle: it´s the air gap between layers that insulates. This is why sailboats with hull liners don´t suffer from condensation there.

    Wow, that boat is awesome. It looks like it was a very high end boat originally, and still is! Engine access is great, the cockpit enclosure is great, the hull design with an almost full keel and rudder on skeg is perfect, water and fuel capacities are great, even the wheel has some thought into it. I love your boat! Great video, thank you for your hard work in creating it. Edit: and you play guitar, definitely subscribed! I shouldn't worry about my guitar drying out on a sailboat, right:)

    Wow great advice….,, I was looking for a way to insulate my boat ….. and minimise the condensation….. First thought was styrofoam…… I have a original 1986 build fibreglass cabin boat … former sail boat but mast removed and with a wonderful low depth of just 0.50 cm …. It’s my full time living accommodation…, working during the day and coming back in the evening and staying wild ( no fees … no harbour …. just public access and the daily move ) I saved all my rent from not having a rental flat and living on my boat..,,, even in winter at freezing minus 9 degrees C ( and the only problem was the outboard motor froze slightly )

      What do you have in the way of heating?

    • @davidphilipp574
      @davidphilipp574 Год назад

      @@ChasingContours I currently use my alcohol stove for cooking and heating …. which works short time … I plan to put a wood burning stove / oven in it with proper ventilation ( after I removed the old spray foam insulation from 1986, which seemed to have moulded over time ..,,, So removing the fake ceiling and replacing that old spray foam insulation will be a task…. but with your advice I hope I will improve the insulation and battle the condensation…… at least until I get my wood burning stove installed… that should battle some condensation

    We build the new Sentinel-class cutters for the Coast Guard and only supply the US made sea anchor. The JSD only works for a small number of older boats designs. it can't handle the newer boat designs. Dyneema won't solve the JSD breakage issues.

      Strange. There are many accounts of modern yachts of various sizes using a JSD successfully including ourselves.
