Микс на бобине, часть истории DJ культуры в СССР - DJ World Hip Hop Classic's - Mr. Tape 1991 (russkij skretchit na bobinah).

My first experiments in production involved isolating a few seconds of breaks or fx and combining them on an old 4-track reel-to-reel, with "scratching" done on a Fisher-Price record player. Great way to get a physical feel for sound manipulation. Sometimes the best tool is the one at hand, as we say in photography.

People still do it. Kerri Chandler does whole sets on reel to reel, he's been doing it for years, uses 4 I think, some of his sets are on YT. And Greg Wilson has a reel to reel alongside his turntables that he uses to play samples and stuff off of.

I had a varispeed Walkman (well. It had a tiny hole in the back and one day I took it apart to find out what it was. Tured out there was a slot in a component on the circuit board to fine tune the speed). I used to speed up tracks on the tape player Walkman with a tiny screwdriver snd get the beats in time with my non varispeed record deck. This was when I was about 13. I'm 48 now and still mixing.
I remember my first turntables which were belt drives! I then upgraded to direct drive but found mixing so easy that I switched back to belts, just felt more fun and challenging to keep the mix going with belts
Absolutely incredible! Nowadays kids have the most phenomenal digital technology on the planet yet they still can't pull something off as amazing and captivating as this.
Mate. It sounds like shit lmao. I have heard way better mixes of today than this. It perhaps was impressive of it's time, but it's time for you to stop these nostalgic delusions, fine you can enjoy it, but it just doesn't compare to today's standards.
I’m a Music Prod/ Dj who uses sync and all this “digital technology” I can assure you that technology gives me LOTS of time to do more important fun things besides Beatmatching, and you can not call me less skilled than old school dj’s who beatmatch. I focus on extremely intense buildups, bass swaps, voice swaps, and I barely if ever let the track play alone. 95% of my mixing is live mashups, and that is an art in itself. Look up James Hype. Yeah we might sync, but this allows us to pretty much produce new songs, never heard before, live before our audience. It’s a completely different thing. I highly respect the video and I would like for the hate against modern tech house dj’s to stop because we focus on different things. Amazing and Captivating are subjective matters. As a Tech House dj I care about how hard can I make the next song drop. It’s all about target audience. And don’t start me on “oh you use sync you’re not talented” cause I play classical Piano and got my Music High school Diploma (Abitur in Germany) age 13 playing the original Rhapsody in Blue by Gerschwin. But god damn I do enjoy myself a hard, nasty Techno drop.
@@regulatedfreestylevideos nah, just had enough of y'all hatin' on modern dj's. I guess let's agree to disagree and leave it to that. I couldn't enjoy that kind of music, and you couldn't enjoy mine. Peace

At that time there was no Record shops in Latvia (former soviet union) where you could buy vinyls with fresh dance music. Music was "imported" and copied "illegally" tru various sorces. Only way to for western dance/club music to spred was by copying it from reel to reel. Guys modified their equipment, added variable speed option to be able to beatmach tracks and so on. Those guys was true pioneers of "modern" djing at that time and place where they builded their own sound systems, orginize parties, and bringed "western" club club culture behind "iron curtain"... Yung generation never will understand these because everything are already "done" for them where "dj´ing" in nowdays became like another consumer form of "expression" where ready products and services are sold for "wannabee" generation...
I certainly don’t take for granted what we have these days. As easy as it may be to buy DJ equipment , it’s just as easy to suck at it, no matter what piece of gear you buy.
My deepest respect goes out to all the ppl who spend their time in making djing the thing it is now, who took it to another level! Then and now! I was never blessed with the necessary skills and i never will be. But its always nice to see where it all started and where its going to be. And this evolution is just fascinating!

His skill level, how did he remember where all the tracks and samples were on the reel so as to be used at tye flick of a switch or the rotation of a wheel ALL in rhythm and at the correct beat/8count. . . Do you guys have any idea!!! Only a real DJ could even start to appreciate this guys skill level. Never mind the fact that his equipment had to be known inside and out. Experimented on and adapted and improved and fine tuned. GOSH. Thank you for sharing this, i never knew it was possible, let alone that it actually existed. I remember seeing this showcase back in the day. Improvising could be considered the mother of invention. Not all of us had access to turntables and vinyl so you use what you got. Something hes also doing which would really become popular til very recent. He was able to layout and structure his set without having to change records. we would really see this type of thing til DVS was introduced. Kudos to you Mr Tape.

Not so good times, but good memories of finding tracks that could blend still!!
Mr Tape is a whole other level! ♥️
People still do it. Kerri Chandler does whole sets on reel to reel, he's been doing it for years, uses 4 I think, some of his sets are on YT. And Greg Wilson has a reel to reel alongside his turntables that he uses to play samples and stuff off of.

I also started out with a Realistic Mixer 🙌🏻❤️
I had a varispeed Walkman (well. It had a tiny hole in the back and one day I took it apart to find out what it was. Tured out there was a slot in a component on the circuit board to fine tune the speed). I used to speed up tracks on the tape player Walkman with a tiny screwdriver snd get the beats in time with my non varispeed record deck. This was when I was about 13. I'm 48 now and still mixing.

This is unbelievable the dedication the talent it takes to do this is just incredible!
I remember my first turntables which were belt drives! I then upgraded to direct drive but found mixing so easy that I switched back to belts, just felt more fun and challenging to keep the mix going with belts
While Ivan Drago was fighting Sly, his younger brother was tearing up the club. Legendary!

Bro... There is no way this is the 90s. People had real DJ equipment by then
Absolutely incredible!

There's talent in every generation, and with every generation, there's a generation forgotten. It's just the cycle.

My deepest respect goes out to all the ppl who spend their time in making djing the thing it is now, who took it to another level! Then and now! I was never blessed with the necessary skills and i never will be. But its always nice to see where it all started and where its going to be. And this evolution is just fascinating!
I forget exactly how the quote goes but talent doesn't exist, talent is just thousands of hours of practice

Is this genius still alive. OMG i bet some modern day DJ's would like to sit and chat with this guy.
GOSH.
