I recently bought the Zoom A1X, as I play the cello and I like it. It works really well with my silent electric cello, but not so much with the acoustic ones. One of my acoustic cellos has a Fisher pick up on it and I heard more of the whooshing of the bow on the strings that really annoyed me. The other one I tried with the condenser mic and I had a bit of feedback, I will try it with a different mic eventually, as I have several.
A Mark Wood signature Viper violin... that one is a fretted 6 string, meanwhile I have a black fretless 5 string and there is up to a 7 string version on the Viper
Hey, I LOVE this! Do you have a video on how to set this up? I am completely new to this, I only have an electric violin but no pedals! Would love to know how they all work and connect and the order etc? And is there a way I can record it straight into a daw?
I was really hoping this vid would begin with the whirling-of-the-hands start to your orchestra short ha I want this orchestral sound for my home studio…
That’s really helpful and interesting. Thank you so much for uploading this. Can you show us how the Electro-Harmonix S9 sounds like in the lower two strings of an electric cello?
Acoustic electric guitar player here. I love to trail and loop synth pad and symphony like sounds ala` Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and even Tim Reynolds of DMB. Although I am not really a violin player, I do noodle on my electric violin from time to time, more for inspiration for my loops. I like EHX and Zoom pedals, I also have a volume pedal for swells, sometime I use an attack/decay auto swell pedal that has an envelope, reverb, delay, reverse delays, and the mel9 along with my slide to get symphony tones. Something I found useful is dual or triple sourcing different pickups on the same instument or even just splitting the signal, and EQing those signals to different pedals separately, before or after the effects, seems to maximize the range of different pedals, especially with tracking for octave effects. Hope that helps! Ty
Matt, Thank you for being so open minded. I say it all the time. But from a krusty, knarr death DooM metal kid chasing violin; It means alot. I love my Viper BTW. Shout out to Dunkan! 🪦🎻🪦 PS, I found a drummer who's down to play some blakkened Viol DooM! :)
Great video! Almost about to pull the trigger for the S9... How well is the volume tracking when it comes to sustained swells, given it was designed with the attack of a guitar in mind?
It depends. You can blend in your dry sound, too, which is going to help a lot. It tracks the beginning of notes really well. It can get a little sustain-y if you're not careful with how you set it, though. Be sure to choke your notes out when you want them to end.
Thanks for the great info. I currently have the Mel 9 pedal which has orchestra, cello, and strings. I use use it with my violin to get a string section kind of sound. I was wondering if you have tried it and would consider the S9 better than the Mel 9? One thing that I found I do not like about the Mel 9 is its over the top modulation/vibrato sound. I tame it as much as I can with delay and reverb. Does the S9 have a lot of modulation/ vibrato as well? Thanks again for the great content.
I took it out this weekend on a gig. I really like the overall sound but there are a few things I didn't really dig. It takes away quite a bit of your right hand control. I tried to put it in front of an autowah at one point and I had basically no control over the autowah.
Greetings. i have a yamaha thr10 x guitar amp. purchased a yamaha yev105nt 5 string electric violin. which is the best all purpose pedal i can use. my style of music is light jazz the autumn leaves.
Do you know of any purpose-built computer software that creates a similar symphonic sound to use in a DAW like pro tools? (To be generated from a single voice electric violin, not from midi)
You can use our website - electricviolinshop.com We ship to 90+ countries worldwide. When you go to check out, you can put in your address and the website will calculate shipping costs.
Despite the quality of the synth on the S9, it sounded like the A1X was a bit more responsive to your articulation. Seems like that's always the compromise with sounding like an ensemble though - the more articulation you let through, the more individual and less "ensemble" it sounds 🤔. Conversely a heavy mix of plateau reverb on the Helix sounds nice and orchestral as long as you're happy only ever to play long swells 😅
That's a pretty fair assessment of the two. The S9 sounds more like an orchestra that you'd hear in the background of a pop or rock tune (which is pretty much how I use that sound) and the A1X is a little more clear. I do like the plateau reverb, but there's a thickness and an "ensemble-ness" that the S9 adds that you can't get from the reverb.
The plateau reverb was just an extreme example of what kind of thing can approach an orchestral sound. The S9 definitely sounds better, I totally agree 👍
Hey brother, thank you for your amazing videos. I already own a helix line 6 floor. What setting or adjustment would I need to do on that unit for my NS CR 4 cello to have the symphony sound?
There are a number of blocks you might want to experiment with. I'd look at some octave shifts, both up and down. I'd look at the Double Take block. I'd also look at some reverb and delay. I have not been able to get the exact sound I want with just the Helix. But you might have better luck than me - or be listening for something different.
Is the A1X effect an effect or a preset? I got the impression from the limited Pickup Test review that it was just a preset combo of other effects, so you could remove the slap-back. But they didn't cover it exhaustively, so I may be missing something.
That's exactly right. The A1X sound is a preset. I haven't gone under the hood of the sound (and most of our customers don't - they pretty much want plug and play sounds). I'm sure you could disable the slap back, but it would definitely change the effectiveness of the preset.
Thanks for the clarification :) If they're getting such a good result from a chain of regular effects that gives me hope for finally getting a better result from my Stomp one day 😅
I created a patch in zoom g1x four and wanted to remake it in zoom g3xn but there is one effect i can't find the alternative of it It's name mod reverb What should i do
Hello. I am currently located in México City, do you happen to know a place where it would be posible to get the S9? Ive been looking for it in Amazon and haven't had any luck... thank you in advance
My dear friend I wish to buy one String9 I am from Rio de Janeiro Brazil but they dont sell for us , and I don't know why, it could be an used pedal ,but functionning all
Good day I have zoom a1x4 and yamaha yev 4 string . Can you please help me to set a feel Good sound Actually I don't know how to do that . The preset sounds it's not feeling nice to hear through fender amb.
If you were to either, record an orchestra, or layer up string tracks in a daw and output them to an Impulse response file, and load them in to something like the TC or sonic cake IR loader pedals, would that give your an orchestral sound when playing the electric violin through it?
It is videos like this that are the reason I have a massive playlist called "Electric Violin Shop". Thank you, sir.

I never knew the Flying V violin existed. That is surprisingly awesome.
It's khalled a Wood (brand name) "Viper" model. I have one. It is the most death metal violin ever.
A Mark Wood signature Viper violin... that one is a fretted 6 string, meanwhile I have a black fretless 5 string and there is up to a 7 string version on the Viper
I love my seven string.
Thank you SO much. I've been dying for anyone, anywhere to play something other than a guitar through any of the EHX 9 series. So cool!!!
I must have one of those S9 pedals

S9 pedal Electro-Harmonics

I actually like that the orchestra stops as you go up. Perfect way to end a lick, really…
I really should have done that. Where were you when I was filming this?

I dig that phase cannon on your shoulder. Oh wait, that's a wood violin. Lol
Matt, what happened to the dollar bill you had folded behind the bridge ? Good video
I got thirsty after a gig one night...
What are the settings you are using for the A1X four?
Stock settings on this one.

Hello, I have an electric violin, but I don't know what kind of wires to use and what kind of headphones the type of violin is Stagg
probably p2 to p10 plug . or p10 - p10

Yes. It's a full feature multi-effects pedal.

somtimes the latency can drag of course - but that kind of sounds real-ish sometimes ?
If it was rushing, it would sound more real.
How about for electronic cello?
Same pedal.
@ElectricViolinShop and that the only thing you need I have the amp and just add zoom a1x four
Do you know of any purpose-built computer software that creates a similar symphonic sound to use in a DAW like pro tools? (To be generated from a single voice electric violin, not from midi)
No. But if you're recording into a DAW, just record all the parts yourself...

Yes, you can remove the slap back or change its speed or feedback. All the modules are quite configurable.

I am interested in knowing this too!

Who makes this violin?
It's a Wood Violins Viper
Coolest violin that I ever saw!🎻@@ElectricViolinShop
It the weight of this violin really heavy? I would love to buy it.. But heard it is like 3 to 4 KGs 😢
lol! No. A VERY heavy electric violin would be less than one kilogram.
whats that thing which covers strings after pickup? And what for?
It's a piece of leather. It's to kill the schinnnng you can get from the after length of the strings when using heavy distortion.
