  • Table saw Sled for Evolution Rage 5-S
    In this video I'm finally making my table saw sled for the Evolution Rage 5-S I got in my workshop. The sled is multi function, it has several T-tracks to allow freedom in clamping and potential jig making. It also comes with a zero clearance plate that you can easily change for a new one if it gets damaged or if you want to use a blade that is wider or thinner.
    Don't forget to Subscribe to my channel of you haven't done so yet as I will be making few interesting jigs for this sled.

    This is definitely the sled for me , it looks safe to use which my wife is terrified of me using the Rage 5 table saw on its own, although there will be a few occasions when I will. I have had the table saw now for 11 months and still not used it , only to check it out , this is because of a severe RTA in which I broke my spinal collumn, three ribs and bleeding in my head, but hey I'm ready for the fray !
    Thank you Thomas, I do look forward to this project.

    Good job Tomas. I've actually seen several other videos about making a sled and they have advised that a small 45 degree chamfer is cut into the squared feed board to ensure sawdust doesn't accumulate and hold the piece to be cut off square. Although, I guess if there's compressed air available, it would maintain cleanliness of the sled. Just a thought. Keep up the good work Tomas, I'm glad I'm a subscriber.

    • @CasualDIY

      Evolution saws take only evolution blades unfortunately. You would need a reducing ring to put other blades but I would not recommend this as all Evolution saw have lower RPMS than normal about 3500 where normal blades are made for about 7000-9000

    Bit vague on last comment, I've got a rage 5s on order but want the things ready when it arrives to make the sled. Just wondered what thickness the HDPE you used was.

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  4 года назад +1

      Mine was 1cm thick originally but you need to take some thickness away as it would be too deep. I didn't give the dimensions of the runners as you need to "sneak up" on them to get perfect fit. Even though you will have the same saw the slots may be slightly wider or thinner or deeper etc.

    I know this is an older video, I just wondered if you experiance any play in the sled, for instance if you move it through the blade holding it in a different position? I noticed that no matter how accurate my runners are, the sliding part of the table which has a slot in it has enough play to cause differences in the sleds squareness depending on where you push it from.

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  9 месяцев назад

      Never experienced that mate. The only thing I change is the middle insert plate as I work with different blades and kerfs I just make a new one from time to time. Not sure what you mean by holding it in a different position, it goes one way, well two ways forward and back. If you got Rage 5s table saw then use the mitre slots that are on the fixed table and not the sliding part. If you make the runners fit snug and no play to them I can see how you can get any play in the sled.

    Thank you so much for your guide! Quick but important question for you.
    In the UK, the Evolution Rage 5-S is no longer easily obtainable in high street shops (Screwfix) and it has been 'replaced' by the Evolution R255PTS. The main change is the left extension table no longer comes with the saw and it is about 20cm shorter as a result at its max extension. given the fact that your sled rests on the left table, would you still "recommend" the R255PTS as a good table saw? It's sort of an important question for me as I would be really keen to construct your sled and I'm wondering if it would be a mistake to buy the R255PTS.

    What is your view about runner depth. Should I make them deep enough that the rest of the sled is lifted slightly above the table or should they be thin so the whole sled base slides on the table?

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  3 года назад

      I think it's best if they are slightly thinner so the whole sled rests on the table. Why? Over time if the sled is above the table it will eventually sag down and create a slight bow and inaccuracies. And I feel it would be lest stable and rigid. Hope this helps

  • @thumpatron
    @thumpatron 4 года назад +1

    Hi Thomasz, thanks for sharing a great improvement for the Rage 5-S. I've built this now, and a couple of notes for you and others wanting to give it a try. I found it really difficult to get the HDPE to the right size. I don't have a bandsaw so I actually made a rig for my jigsaw to make these cuts and they still weren't perfect. I then used sandpaper but again it was time consuming and difficult. I've seen now that you can buy ready made runners for table saw rigs and in hindsight I would definitely recommend others just to buy them ready made. Second, the clamps that you use in the video are actually incompatible with the t-track size you recommend, so people shouldn't just buy them expecting them to fit. No big deal, I've managed to buy some adapters for them, but I wondered why you didn't use wider t-track to be more compatible with ready made clamps? I have put a layer of finishing oil on the bottom face of my sled and it's made it much easier to slide, reducing the need for force and making it feel much safer. Thanks!

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  4 года назад

      Yes it all depends on what tools you already got. But I had no major issues with cutting the plastic to the right size. With regards the clamps they are the cheapest I have found. And you can just use some long bolts with them. That's what I do now. Comes out so much cheaper. Depending on the t track you may just need to sand off a bit of the bolts head. Saved me a fortune that did 😁👍
      All the best and thank you for watching and your comment. Stay safe.

    • @5084204
      @5084204 Год назад

      I think you could use clamps designed to hold the track (for plunge saws) something like: WEN 36053C 6" Quick Release Track Saw Clamps (2 Pack), Black (amazon link), just put the lever mechanism in the other direction. HDPE can be run on thicknesser, but check your manual as there are minimal thicknesses described. I will check the depth of my EVO tracks today.

      Do you mean the safety block at the front of the sled? Mine did not as it's quite thick and I just know when to stop the sled so the blade will not go through the block. I hope that's what you are asking for.

    • @CasualDIY

      It's HDPE plastic that I use for making molds for resin casting. In simple terms you can get a super cheap plastic cutting board and just rip it to the right size👍

    Hi, love your videos. The only bit i'm struggling with is the runners as I don't have a band saw and getting them accurate will be difficult. Just wondering if you have any suggestions. I'm using a half inch, or so HDPE chopping board as I can't source a specific product like you used. Post Brexit is a nightmare here in Ireland as Amazon is pretty much of no use due to import duties. Don't just get the choice over here. I was lucky to find a stockist of this saw. I really need to make a sled as the mitre guide on my Evolution 5-S (purchased last week) has extremly bad play. It's only useable when it's attached to the sliding bed and is only fully stable once the work piece is clamped. I'm new to woodworking so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shane.

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  3 года назад

      Regardless of what material you will use ( I prefer plastic HDPE in my case as I had it from making molds for resin casting, plastic will not be affected like wood where it comes to moisture. But plywood would be a good idea as well) you need to cut it to the right size. I actually just done it on my table saw as I made some zero clearance plate which made it a lot easier and safer. I wouldn't try to make those runners if I didn't had the zero clearance plate as the original orange one has got a gap way to large.

      I have had good luck using chopping board plastic for runners. Also, I had the same problem with mitre gauge play. I used painters tape on the mitre runner to widen it and it works fine. Just need to replace the tape from time to time.

    H Tomasz, thank you for another fab instruction.
    Not sure which of your posts is the most appropriate for my T track question, this one seems as good as any...
    Here in the UK there are a confusing (to me) few options in T track dimensions. I'm talking about basic track, not the more advanced extrusions. I understand that Outer Dimensions are consistent at 19mm, but there seems to be some variation in the Internal Dimensions from different suppliers.
    Is there one definitive size that will accept all third-party accessories, or am I hoping for too much? Thanks in advance for your thoughts- I know you've covered a lot of T track stuff already in your various posts, but I'd love to see your in-depth video on this topic alone!..
    Best wishes,
    Simon

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  2 года назад

      Hi Simon, that's true, there is so many T-tracks out there with different sizes. Now I don't think there is just one standard, but there may be one more popular than the other. Me for example I buy T-tracks when I see a good offer, and by doing that I usually end up with t-tracks of different dimensions in my workshop. However I have to say that so far everything fits in all of them. One suggestion I may have for you is to find the cheapest t-track and buy that. If some of your accessories - t-bolts or normal bolts will not fit, just grind them down a bit so they fit. That's what I do. Hope this helps a bit.

      Yes if you will be changing the blade. I was swapping my blades mainly due to testing and the kerf was slightly different between them. But if 1mn gap won't bother you then no there is no point. When I will do another sled it will have the zero clearance plate but that is my preference and laziness as I don't have to measure anything and the zero clearance plate will indicate where the blade will be exactly 👍

    Dziękuję za świetny filmik - bardzo fajne sanki!
    Niedawno nabyłem piłę tarczową i planuję w niedalekiej przyszłości dorobić do niej sanki i nasunęły mi się dwa pytania:
    1. Myślisz, że sklejka grubości 10mm też wystarczy, czy będzie za wiotka lub niepraktyczna pod kątem wkręcania wkrętów? zawsze zostałoby 4mm więcej cięcia :)
    2. Mógłbyś podpowiedzieć gdzie można kupić takie ściski, których użyłeś?

    • @CasualDIY

      Any varnish and or wax will be fine. I often just use sanding sealer and wax. To hang it on the wall I just made a "shelf" a piece of 2x4 and at the top a locking mechanism. Which was one strip of done off cut secured to the wall and another one attached with one screw to the first one with a washer between those two pieces. So you can easily move it.

    Interesting features you have there, the T-tracks and the zero clearance strip. My only complain is the way you set up your sled's squareness. There is a way that is pretty much standard on setting the back fence for square cuts, made by William Ng. Here is his video, ruclips.net/video/UbG-n--LFgQ/видео.html . Test your sled using his method and you may see that your squareness is not that good, or mayb it will be, who knows.

    This is a first for me as i usually like what you make but unfortunately i'm not fond of this build, there are too many tracks for my liking and if i was going put a track in it would be on the push part were you can put a stop block for repeated cuts.
    It's a sled so it doesn't need all these tracks on it, as for a zero clearance there is already one on the first cut, and as a Evolution blade why would you want to change it, sorry but that's how i feel.
    Oh and i haven't given a thumbs down on this in case you were wondering, i only do thumbs up.

      Thanks for the feedback mate. I use two blades for my saw, the multiblade and the wood dedicated blade which is slightly thinner. But I'm also planning to try out the Saxon blades I got one with 3600 RPMS I think. Where it comes to the t-tracks I got few jigs that will utilise them. Hope it will make more sense in the future videos. As I'm limited on space I need my jigs to do multiple things for me as I can't afford to have too many. That's the reasoning behind it. But I fully respect and understand your opinion 👍

    hi mate thought id give you and everybody else a quick hack for this table saw as being a fabricator welder myself i like to do things the easy way :) and i think you have missed a trick with this saw..in its standard state the saw gives a fair table working size but both you and everyone else uses an extra support stand to cut larger sheets but we actually dont need to make or buy a stand we just need to do this.the left side of the table only pulls out so far so heres the hack.go to your local diy store purchase 2x 2m 12mm round tubes and a lenth of 47mm square wooden post remove the standard tubes on the saw, cut posts to leg size needed add a thread to bottom to adjust feet height attach legs to corners where tubes fitted drill threw where holes are now insert the tubes drill a hole threw each tube and bang a screw threw them drill hole threw other end add a nut and bolt threw it and voila you have now added 2 metres to the cutting length of the saw easy peasy
