    This is another 'almost' makes me want to pick it up. The price point is a huge deterrent for the average amateur photographer like myself. Plus I do not have NEAR the amount of gear needed to fill it .... yet.

    I just got my PM backpack yesterday and I too was skeptical on the price. I think many people are. But just like you, after actually handling the pack. I also see why the price is relatively high. Personally, I love it. I also love how large it is, I’m a big dude at 6’5 (not saying a smaller person can’t use the pack) and it fits me well. It’s definitely worth the investment. If you have the money, go for it 100%

    I got it on the Kickstarter and saved a good deal. Was it expensive, yes. Is it worth it? I believe it's worth the Kickstarter price if I'm honest. You also have to look at the price of your gear that you are carrying. If you don't own a bunch of med-highend gear then no, it's not worth it. When I looked at how much my stuff is worth, Sony a6400, Sony 18-105, Sony 70-350, Sony 50 and Sigma 16 then a $400 well made, providing great protection is worth it.
    Totally agree with Dunna and it really isn't an everyday type bag for on the go unless you need to take a bunch of stuff with you everyday. For a travel bag or to store all your gear then it's a terrific bag.

    I asked my grandfather who i lived with to back this bag on kickstarter for me for christmas 2019. He being still on the old fashioned does not trust crowdfunded projects because of delays and production mishaps. He did however tell me that once the bag was released for retail purchase, he would get me the full set as a late christmas gift. On February 9th, 2020 he passed away from an unknown illness that he had not even had for a full week (our entire family believes it was COVID despite no official reports of it anywhere near us yet) After that everything (including our house) was left to my uncle who wasted no time in kicking me out to move the rest of his family in the house. He has been lenient in a couple things like letting me buy the car my grandfather let me use from him, but hasnt been much help otherwise. I plan on asking him for the bag for christmas this year in hopes he might honor his fathers wishes and get it for me as his wife thinks its a good idea so she will hopefully try to encourage him to do it, but my hopes are slim. Now with not only paying my uncle for the insurance on the car until we can have the title transferred over to me when the DMV's open up, as well as the non owners insurance i already had, plus my rent, and college expenses, it seems like this bag went from something i almost had, to something far off in my future.

    Great review.
    I've been watching all the reviews on the Nomadic Bags and Luggages. I'm about to pull the trigger on some of their accessories (cubes, toiletry bag and Vacuum bag with their 50% sale they have on). I had just purchased a TravelPro Platinum Elite CarryOn and it arrived today. I can't help but think I want to return it immediately and spruce for the Nomadic Carry-On but the $580 CAD price tag is tough to swallow.

    I backed this Kickstarter campaign early. I own the Prvke 31 and Duo Daypack by Wandrd and used a 30L Peak Design Everyday Backpack before those. It arrived at the start of lock down so it hasn't been tested yet, but it's clear the team spent days going over every little detail. If I had to sum it up: you paying for the PM name, but like anything he sells the quality matches the price tag. Nomatic make solid gear and stand behind it a reasonable warranty program. I'll be freaking stoked to finally use this on a real world trip once quarantine is over, but until then I'm turning to Craigslist to offload my old bags.

    I can't believe anyone didn't ask about weight. You mentioned it being hefty, with all the other bags inside of it.
    The big question though, HOW MUCH DOES IT WEIGH FULL OF GEAR?
    Also for students most people underestimate all that they have to bring with them daily to be prepared. Personal transportation isn't always possible to have, plus parking is typically a nightmare, it's too far to leave your books & notebooks in until you need them. It's common for students to need to carry ALL of what they need for the entire day in their backpack [& often additional bags].
    Most don't realize students need to carry 2-3 thick [heavy] books, several 3-ring binders [1", 2", 3"], plus their camera & gear, & lunch, workout clothing (including a separate pair of shoes), laptop & all it needs (extra battery, cords, external harddrives). Considering all that, do you still think it'll be too big for daily school use?

  • @joshua4578
    @joshua4578 4 года назад +2

    At one time I was so amped up about this bag and now that it’s out, I find my self not as interested. IF I was buying today, I’d buy a Wandrd I think. I’m still waiting until I have that moment when I realize I don’t have what I need and then I’ll make a decision. I was thinking, “What bag would I take to go to London and Nigeria if I was going again this summer?” and I realized I would probably take the same camera bag I had last time. That’s when I decided I needed to let my bag fever subside. The ThinkTank Urban Approach 15 was very capable for me while being compact enough to make riding the Underground manageable as well.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад +1

      Good for you! I get bag fever super hard! Sometimes the smartest thing to do is use what you already have! Sure, it might be nice to have some extra features and such but the hassle and cost of constantly upgrading take a big toll. Maybe someday, you’ll decide it’s time to go with something else but it’s good to give yourself time to consider what you really need!

      It doesn't really make sense to compare those things though. That's like saying "This garage cost almost as much as the car I'm putting in it!" If you were considering this, it would be an investment... likely to hold multiple expensive pieces of gear and protect them. Hopefully, it will outlast those other pieces of gear and you'll have it for a long time. I'm not saying it's not expensive... it is... but its also a solid piece of kit (from what I can tell so far).

    I’m between this one and a Shimoda Action X30. I have the Prvke 31L but it just doesn’t have enough quick access organization. Not sure the McKinnon/Nomatic one does either - but that whole clothes compartment could be used for tech stuff, I guess.

  • @quickdry3
    @quickdry3 4 года назад +2

    Setting aside the obscene costs of camera bags cause that’s just the way of the world, how do you think this compares with the Shimodas or the Atlas Athlete? I use an FSTOP Tilopa, and it’s a big tank, even taking the metal frame out, it’s always a giant. How noticeable is the reduction in size when the PM “clothes area” isn’t used? when it’s not in “camera + carryon clothes” mode, is it in the “comfy every day camera bag” size range vs say the PRVKE (or check how much the Atlas Athlete compresses down)

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад +1

      Unfortunately, I don’t have any hands on experience with the more hiking-centric bags you’re referring to. With the PM, you’re looking at about 2-3 inches of thickness added if you need to use the extended front section. But it “feels” pretty minimal as far as changes between either mode. Like I mentioned, I don’t think this is really going to be an ideal daily carry for many people because it is just always pretty big(compared to something like the wandrd duo, peak design every day backpack or other specifically designed daily bags). When I’m not using the roll top on the Wandrd (or just not extending it much) it’s about a 3/4 the height of the PM and it’s a lot less stuff in structure so it feels a bit smaller just because of that. Hope that helps a bit!

      @@dunnadidit that info is great and does help, thanks. (also, thanks for a review that notes the negatives as well as the positives, it's hard when so many 'reviews' out there seem to find that each bag they're sent is 'the perfect bag' )

      @Dunna Did It, nice review! What I was looking for. Would be interested in a follow on review once you put it through the paces.
      @quick _dry, I have the Atlas Athlete and Shimoda (X30 & X70).
      My guess (as I don’t own it) is that I would say the PM’s bag targets more professional work and travel but it’s heavy, similar to the PD 45l (which I have) but more comfortable than PD.
      The Atlas Athlete (smaller version) and Shimoda is more for outdoor. You could get away with it at work if you get the black color but for Corporate setting, both are designed for the outdoors. Both have very comfortable strap systems and removable waist belts. Both can expand or compress. Shimoda is lighter than the Atlas because it doesn’t have a built in ICU (internal camera unit).
      For professional environment and/or traveling for work or personal, PM’s pack fits that use case well.
      For outdoor sports, both Atlas and Shimoda packs will serve you well. They’re super comfy and versatile (you can carry expensive camera gear in rough weather and it will be protected while adding non-camera gear). Both can pack down or carry 45l or more.
      I’ve just opted in on the Boundary Arris on Kickstarter (just finished) because it serves the outdoor use of what Shimoda and Atlas is made for, while you can bring it into the professional work environment that I need as well and pack down if needed. Straps are great, lots of add-ons for the system (optional), but super lightweight because of the soft goods material.

    • @dunnadidit

      Hey’ I know it’s a bit of a long video but there is actually a point where I have them both on the table at the same time. Thickness wise, they’re almost the same, the PM backpack might be a bit deeper and definitely deeper if you extend the front pocket. And height wise, when the rolltop is down on the Wandrd, it’s quite a bit shorter but it also gets quite a bit taller if you pack the rolltop.

    I have he Nomatic travel pack and while it’s nice, it’s extremely heavy. Especially when filled with 5 days of clothes and laptop and other accessories. Also for an every day bag, it’s not that spacious unless you unzip and expand it. I can fit a normal size square lunch box, 32 L water bottle and a hoody before I have to start cramming other things in it.

    Hey Dunna great review...But speaking as an amateur photographer and not a professional one, this gear is super expensive for me... The backpack costs almost 600 EUR... It costs as much as my camera body? Why should I spend that much on a backpack and not a camera gear like a lens for example??

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад

      Hey Manos! Thanks for the kind words! To answer your question plainly... you probably shouldn't. This is an investment, the idea would be that this bag should last you through several different camera bodies and act as protection and transportation of your gear as you travel... if you don't travel a lot, or if you don't make money from your photography enough to invest in long term gear solutions... then spending that much probably isn't the right choice. Just like buying the Biggest, fanciest camera body and most expensive lenses also isn't the right choice for most amateurs either unless they have money to burn. But all that said... this is a great bag and if at some point in your life you find yourself going "man, i really wish that I had a single solution for travel with my camera gear that was super high quality and had all the bells and whistles and will last a long time." then this bag might become an option. Hope that makes sense!

    the craftsmanship is there, there's no denying that,but in all honesty, it terms of multi-functionality, practicality, versatility , the Peak Design Travel backpack overtakes this backpack and blows it out of the water, if you seriously and deeply analyze both backpack, you'll see the Peak Design is better all around.

      @@dunnadidit one thing I really love about the peak design travel backpack is that it has FULL perimeter access on BOTH sides of the bag (to access your quick access camera cubes and what not), also I love that you can stow the straps to completely hide them away, and the rain cover for the backpack is always there at the front in an almost impossible to detect compartment along with the utility straps for strapping things to the front, plus the all black version also looks kinda Barman-style so would it be right up your alley : ) , you should definitely give it a try, by the way that was a really good review! and thanks for responding my comment, best wishes to you mate!

    I also have the black Wandred backpack which I absolutely love because it doesn’t look like the usual camera bag. Also love the small zipper compartment at the back making it a safer spot for passport/tickets/iPhone ..I’m wondering how the Nomatic backpack feels and weigh.I just wish tho that they places the small magnetic compartment for keys/passport/wallets/fons on the back part for safety reasons

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад +1

      The nomatic is quite a bit heavier than the wandrd from what I can tell. It’s a lot more stiff of a construction than the wandrd is as well. So depending on what you like in a bag, that might make a difference for you, I agree that the back compartment for the passport is a fantastic idea too. Either that or nomatic could have found a more secure way to close that pocket.

    • @artventurespro
      @artventurespro 4 года назад

      Dunna Did It I agree that the Nomatic(as cool as it is) is a bit of an overkill and that the Wandrd bag is about the right size for an overnight to a 3 day trip.and not having to break the bank. The luggage is also cool which if I don’t have a reliable one right now or if it time to upgrade then It’s the one I’d get. It’s like those situations where you have an iPhone 11Pro that you don’t necessarily need to upgrade to the 12 but when you still have the 8 or XR then the upgrade is worth they extra $$$..great review tho..

    The backpack is almost too big. Not sure it’ll fit under an airplane seat. And it looks like it was made for big DSLR cameras and overkill for mirrorless.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад

      It’s a big one for sure. I think it will fit under some seats but maybe not all. I’ve had the same experience with my prvke. Most of the time it fits, but not all the time. This will fit in the overhead though.

    • @spvxter
      @spvxter 4 года назад

      actually!! the collapsible bag is perfect for mirrorless and was designed with smaller systems like fuji and sony in mind. big dslr camera like the 5D Mark IV and D850 will have a hard time fitting in the padded compartment. If you are a pro user, the big bag will still for perfect if you use a lens like the song e-mount mirrorless 70-200 which is as big as the canon dslr ef mount equivalent. It’s a bag that works well for DSLR’s, but it’s capacity is even more valuable for those that have mirrorless or plan on switching to mirrorless. for a run & gun or mobile videographer, the actual bag can not only store enough clothes for a weekend, but also carry all your prime lenses to your traveling shoot. you have the laptop and tablet compartment, the clothes, a smaller mobile component in the form of the cube pack. you’re buying a full mobile command studio system that solves everything

    • @spvxter
      @spvxter 4 года назад

      Also I used the similar and lightly larger Peak Design 45L travel bag. It is 35L normally, like the Nomatic Camera bag, but expands to 45L with two compression zips rather than 42L with the single wrap around zip on the Nomatic. The Peak Design is slightly wider, but even fully expanded, ballooned, and with its two water bottle pockets occupied, it fits perfectly under the seat for most airlines like Southwest, JetBlue, and Alaska. The Nomatic only goes to 42L (small difference) and lacks the second bottle pouch, but unlike the Peak Design, the straps can only fold against the back of the bag rather than stow and hide into flaps. This is due to the better and more ergonomic suspension system used. It’s a better tradeoff and the air travel shouldn’t be an issue.
