How to make a DIY action camera (use an old phone)

Today we’re going to make a DIY action camera out of an old phone. An old phone with a smashed screen is almost worthless, but camera still works so we can use it for our action cam.
Most real action cams feature a wide angle lens to get more close up action in on the shot, so we’ll need to spend $7 on amazon for a stick on lens. This kit actually comes with a few of them, but we’ll only be using the fisheye.
You can use tape, or even a belt, but I used this two sided hook & loop fastener for 6 bucks.
First, glue the fisheye on to the center of the phone camera lens. Be careful not to get any glue on the glass. I’m using hot glue so that I can peel it off if I make a mistake. The trick is to glue it on while it’s really hot, or the lens will likely pop off later. You can use silicone glue for a better adhesion.
Next, we glue the strap to the phone, right on the end.
If you were able to get free shipping, this whole hack only cost us $14, versus $120 for an entry level GoPro hero. This works well, but I’m sure we can still make it better. Share any ideas you have in the comments on a handlebar mount, helmet mount, or ways we can make this design more effective.

Also... you could technically perform this same hack to a cheap waterproof case and not glue a strap or a lens to the phone itself. You could use your primary phone and not damage it at all

Lol I bike ride with baggy jeans. I've basically destroyed the chain cover on my mum's cruiser.
I forgot to mention... when comparing this to an action cam, consider that a smart phone has tons of internal storage, great battery life, small form factor, and wifi. Not to mention a screen for playback (on some cases) and even direct RUclips upload.
On the downside, it's not shock or water resistant. If you can build your own version with elastic straps it would probably perform similar to the GoPro "chesty" mount. In that case, you could also put straps over your shoulders to make it more like the chesty.

drill holes in the back of a case and in a handlebar reflector, bolt them together, and put the phone in the case.

Why not put a case over the phone then stick the lens and Velcro to the case so you still a have fully functional phone when needed
then it can be your main phone, and action camera just that the case is the action camera pretty much, smart

You could make an extender for the lens. I managed to do it on a Drift Ghost X action cam for about $5. Disassembled the unit, removed the lens, cut the wiring and soldered a flexible extender tape. You can get extender tapes for Go Pros for $200+ but if you aren't afraid of a little bit of soldering a DIY version of such tape is a bunch of very thin wires carefully trapped in a length of electrical tape, you just have to mark them somehow so you'd know which is which on both ends. It let me mount the unit on the back of my helmet and the lens on a chin - nobody knows it's there unless I point it out.

Seth!!! I did this with my Micromax except that strap I buy a bungee jumping cord with a hook strapper I love this but the cost of the cord is as much if I put a few dollars it I can buy a go pro isn't it.

glue the valcro onto an iPhone cover, that way you can remove the phone at will. wo the same with the lens. thats what i have done with my iPhone 5s's cover, also made a macro filter lins using an old pin point lazer (any kind will work) and added that to the cover. now my iPhone takes better close up pictures than the galaxy k5 zoom :P

***DO NOT USE AN OLD PHONE*** You don't need to use an old phone, just use a case you don't use, make sure that case is shock proof.

Can the fisheye lens be used on any phone? It says iphone 5 and samsung 4, but you're using a iphone 4 right? I want to make one for my Lumia 640, I swear the image quality on that is so sharp.

Well this isn't home arts and crafts based,but there are tons of knock off gopro type mounts to be had for cheap..and rubber phone covers are everywhere so put the cover on mount and add phone or just a 75 cent automotive hose clamp or two.
glue a strip of foam on one side of the phone to correct the angle and shrink wrap the phone around the lens.. should do the trick
if you phone screen touches your shirt or anything for that matter its always changing things..everything on the screen is active. Thats the issue with doing anything like this..IF there was a way to disarm the screen that might work.

a lot of phones are actually worth a decent bit if you want to sell it on ebay. iphones that are 3 years old still fetch a pretty penny. you could sell one and use the money for a used gopro on ebay pretty easily. dont waste a good phone at least if youre going to do this

Pro tip:put your phone in your pants and have the half of it outside so the camera can record... might have a bit of a problem with the shirt covering it sometimes and the phone has to start recording before you put it in you pants

eh, the tricks in the end of the video was more impressive than the DIY project.
There are cheap knock off GoPros's that are actually REALLY nice and extremly cheap.PLUS it can work with ANY gopro mount. This is also a great option, especially if you plan on laying out money for multiple cameras.
