People love monsters, so I think you might be in a minority here. Also, some of the monsters that you spotlight as ridicilous are classic AD&D Monster Manual (1) creatures, like the catoblepas. Also it is not just invented by a bored Wizard employee it is a "real" mythical (from Africa I think) creature.

Fair points. I know many others can't get enough creatures. If the book works for them then that is all that matters. Thanks for the comment.

Agree with you 100%, the Assorted beasts appendix - just why? But the positives definitely make this book worth owning . I remember racing to the monster lists at the back of the book and wondering, like you, why the heck not cumulative lists? I have bought 3rd party magic item lists that actually incorporate the original DMG magic items to create complete magic item lists so why could Wizards not do cumulative lists for their own product? Still it is what it is and the pluses in this volume outweigh the negatives by a country mile and I regularly dip in and reread for inspiration.

A lot of the monsters you complain about are actually traditional classic monsters from earlier editions. Most of them go all the way back to the earliest editions of D&D.
