Irv you are one the greats! After reading your books a few times over, I expected to see superman when I finally saw you on film. Instead I saw this gentle thoughtful guy at work and realized my hero was a mortal man.
11:22 In my experience, the change came after a series of events that I perceived as traumatic. I fell into depression and didn't really see av way out of it. What was different this time was that I didn't try to get out of it out numb it, I just kept going and taking it. I maintained the depressive mood for several months until I started experiencing changes in the way I saw the world around me and the way I saw myself. The change started about a year ago and is still happening. In my humble opinion, the facility that induces the change is the ability to overstimulate oneself to a point that the current way of seeing the world becomes impossible. After that point, there are two possible ways: mental breakdown or change of view. I believe this is what Dąbrowski called Positive Disintegration.
Irvin Yalom is a hero in this field to many. It is difficult to see him decline in health and memory. I appreciate the questions the interviewer asked in this podcast. It wasn't reheated from the many interviews Yalom has given. Very thoughtful episode.
Thank you Roni for this. Such an influential soul to this field. I appreciate the in depth , heartfelt, and simultaneously down to earth interview of a genuine master of the craft. Blessings.
omg how did you get Irvin that is super impressive... anyway fantastic job Roni the questions are great &really to the point - I' m quite amazed to find out how much you grew up as a person really proud of ya and your recent life/academic choices
Very interesting conversation. But when he makes reference to his deceased wife not existing anymore, that's a belief. He doesn't know that any more than someone knows that their deceased loved one does exist. As someone once said, perhaps the best thing we can bring to our death is a healthy capacity for surprise.
Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

I dont think people change. I think they become more or less of themselves
