Looks like the body of that HKR lock _and the key_ are also made of steel - pretty cool. When selecting locks for my house I tend to balance the ability of the lock to keep miscreants out against the difficulty of getting myself inside if I happen to lose my keys. So I want something that resists common attacks, but I could still open non-destructively if I had my lock picks on me.
If even a professional locksmith would struggle to get inside without damaging the door or breaking a window in the process, I tend to consider that overkill for domestic use e.g. Abloy...
That HKR looks like it would have been an excellent choice though, nigh on indestructable but still pickable.
On a related note, a thing that's often overlooked is that there are security door handles and escutcheons available, which will go some way to prevent drilling and snapping attacks by covering up the face of the lock with a steel housing and a spinner plate.
Correct these protectors started to be developed about 30 years ago. As it protects against core pulling which we introduced with our first tool.
Got loads of pictures of doors with high security door furniture and locks, been broken into in a few seconds through bthe DGU.
@@cardiffpicker1 Yup, I remember reading that in some windows the glass could be taken out by cutting through the beading.
@@Chlorate299 vast majority just smash it, over 70% of break ins in the UK are through smashed toughened glass.
@@Chlorate299 Indeed, security is only as strong as its weakest link. In any case any security is a deterrent, the best defense is not putting targets on display (don't leave a garage door open top long if it has expensive vehicles or tools on show). If the risk/reward is too high, criminals may be deterred and look elsewhere.

To be fair a drilling standard is Rotory tool with a Carbide milling bit.
At his point hardend Metal is no problem at all. But I could imagine Carbide inserts in locks and or ceramics might work superior to add drilling resistance to a lock
The isets are carbide. The milling bit used in the video is a high quality carbide bit we sell to firefighters and locksmiths.
@@Zieh-Fix makes sense to me. I thought the bits he used was just some regular high-speed steal bits.
If the inserts are carbide it absolutely makes sense drilling is a tough thing to do
I’ve used 1/4 inch ball cutters to go through Medeco locks fairly fast.

Not gonna lie. All of us hardened criminals watching here were really disappointed by around the 10m mark of your crime tutorial. Fellow thieves, do not be dissuaded by the apparent lack of ability in a Lock Noob's demonstration of how to steal the treasure within. He gets it eventually, and you, dear thieves, will get it, too. This is a lesson in perseverence and a cautionary tale to which all Grandmas of fine-gold jewellery should take heed!

Just heat the plate with a small torch first and then drill it, the heat will ruin the annealing
As I have learnt to my cost with anti drill, anti pick hardened steel locks, if your lock stops working with the key, you will have to replace the whole door. That lock is NOT coming out.

The attacks are all high speed. This causes the metal to 'work harden'. To cut through this lock you need a good drill bit turning slowly and plenty of lube (TWSS).
Because a thief certainly wants to spend a lot of time in front of the door dripping cutting oil out of a can on the lock. No, see Apu Apu's comment - carbide mill bit.

Very very very hard. Nothing you want to do quick or slow.

We don't sell HKR as they aren't produced anymore. So there is no reason to lie for us here.

Do you have any advice for a new picker, that prefers to pick in hand, but often struggles with cores that contain a lot of spools, due to hand cramps?
I do have a suction desk vise, but i feel like i dont get anywhere near the same type of feedback id get vs in my hand.
It might be the way i hold my pick, in which i let the shank of the pick rest on the last knuckle of my middle finger, and my pointer finger i throw over the top of the handle so it falls in front of my thumb.
holding it the way everyone else seems to, like a pencil, feels off to me, also makes it harder to feel the pins for some reason
You could try the lock in the vice but then place your non picking hand on the vice and lock. You can still get a bit of feedback from the lock if you have some contact with it that way
I don't really see the point of that type of key control, as it would be very easy to just file the same notch in every position. That way it wouldn't matter where the ballbearing was.
Yes it's the same with passive pins but it allows the manufacturers to easily increase the amount of possible combinations. that's why passive elements are very common in mid class zylinders.

looks like a good lock, shame i aint going anywhere near it. why pick a lock when i can just unscrew roof sheets, or pop or grind hinges, or unbolt and smash windows. 100 other ways to brak in. hows it hold up to thermite?

Yeah, making a burglar look for a different path to entry is THE POINT of putting in good locks. If the door that the lock is in has a glass panel next it, well that's just silly. If the patio door in the back has a cheap lock on it, well that's on the homeowner. Security needs to be at a reasonable level all 'round.
You've got to consider, how they get out.not going to get a safe or your motobike out via the roof or window easily. Really need to roll out a door. You can make it alot harder to get out ..if you have a monitored alarm, they don't have forever to do this.

Have you heated up a carbide mill before? You likely will still not be able to drill it. When you are lucky you can mill it.
Assuming you can heat it enough to change it's properties and the door isn't burning 🔥😅

You are drilling the wrong point. But that put to one side....what is the point of the drill protection if it has zero anti snap protection?. There is NO excuse to be manufacturing euro cylinders meant for exterior doors with zero snap protection. Manufacturers are still doing it. On anthor note...the cheapskate manufacturers need to unite and change the industry. They need to improve their products to meet today's standards. Even if it means they agree on new prices that all customers will have to pay. In an ideal world maybe. I say the steel bolts on metal gates....I was thinking....they could easily produce anti angle grinder sliding bolts if they can do that with shackles for his security applications if not all their door hardware. No excuses because it can be done
Baz doesn't want to pay a few more pounds for a lock and will take the cheap knock-off lock that's made in (insert S.E. Asian country) over a lock made in (Germany for instance). Since burglary affects a relatively small portion of the population the odds are Baz won't get burgled and will be satisfies with his p.o.s. lock.
Snapping protection. You will search long for that in germany or Austria.
Insurance normally wants us to install a security fitting you can't easily remove. This is the reason even expensive locks will often not have a snapping protection. Instead a core pulling and pulling protection as that will protect against most snap attempts as well.

It wasn’t destroyed. There is one that’s used for demonstration that’s seen a little hardship, but it still works
The damage on that lock used for demonstration is from 20 years demonstrating and testing on it with high speed carbide tools 😅

Carbide against carbide?
The burrs we used in the video we did for locknoob are made from carbide. If a 25.000rpm carbide burr only does a little dent. A normal carbide drill won't do much more.
Yes with little pressure and enough time you can mill or drill these. But that's not feasible for a locksmith 😉
