  • Happy 2019!!! I finally have been lucky enough to get a Tile Saw for christmas and decide to have a go at cutting a few pieces of Chalcedony, Common Opal, and Rhyolite with Chalcedony through them on my new toy, in an attempt to further my journey into the Lapidary realm. Come along and see how my first time cutting rocks goes. the results are awesome!

    So the quality of these rocks (found in south east Queensland Australia) may not be super awesome, but because it was my first time cutting rocks I didn’t want to do damage to any of my better stuff 😁
    Happy hounding and have a brilliant weekend everybody!

      Thanks for the fun post sir! The amazing ecstatic happy look on your face says it all. Watching you explore was enjoyable and am thankful the anticipation of finding something beautiful is a shared experience between all us Rockhounds. Exposing the "heart" of the stone can be so very rewarding. One interesting note: When out searching for material, I will often find stones that are quite uninteresting to look at on the outside, but shows signs that its a very hard material, (conchoidal fractures, density/weight/mass/hardness) so I pick it up anyway. Sometimes minerals coating the outside or just rough tumbling can disguise/hide the magic waiting inside and we get to expose the wonderous joys found in the earth. (think like an orange rind that covers the good stuff inside) Anyway, really am very happy for you and look forward to seeing what you come up with next! All the best to you and yours in 19' RR.

      Hey buddy!! Isn’t it just amazing what can be on the inside! It’s a complete game changer. I’m noticing that some that I’ve cut in another video look not too cool on the outside and then inside is just nuts. The addiction has grown, and I’m so happy haha!
      Hope you have a great weekend mate and by the way, your video was just great to watch! I loved seeing the hunt!

      Thank you Thomas! That list is super helpful. There’s one club near my place that for the last couple of years I’ve been to their shows and have said I’m definitely joining “this year” but never get around to joining. I think it’s time I do, not only for the machines but for the wealth of knowledge those members have and share. Thank you for the suggestion and hopefully “this year” I do myself a favour and get off my butt to join. Have a great weekend mate!

      Hey, I have spoken to several fellow rockstars in the USA and the lapidary clubs seem quite commonplace in most city's, just like the rookie you are also in a place of privilege for finding materials, I'm in beautiful green England, with its rolling hills and wonderful countryside complete with the distinct lack of rocks.

    watching your genuine reaction and overwhelming joy while doing this is so freakin relatable. When I tell people I'm nervous to use my rock saw because I don't want to destroy a quartz vein I found I feel like most everyone just assumes I can go out and find another one and "they're just rocks, no big deal". Every rock I find has a story to it in my eyes, and even though my house is full of rocks some only with tiny little geode pockets, they are so important to me. The thought of accidentally destroying it just eats me up.
    You keep doing you and showing everyone how personal and satisfying this hobby can be

    My wife and I are just getting into rockhounding. We’ve ventured out into the Mojave desert in the 4x4 and have been lucky to find jasper, agate, jasp-agate, opal, banded obsidian, and a plethora of other cool stuff! We’re hopelessly hooked. We’ve tumbled some of our finds and have had great results and your mate Nix’s vids prompted me to go at a piece of Hector Agate with my variable speed grinder and some polishing disks.To my surprise (and a sore left arm from cradling the grinder for 2 hours) it polished up beautifully. Now after watching your vid I’m buoyed to buy a smaller trim saw like yours and get to the business of cutting. This is such a fun hobby for our family. Thanks for sharing your experience. You’re doing a great job transmitting joy to those around you. 👏🏻👍🏻✌🏻from SoCali.

      Yes!!!! Do it! The best way to learn (which most definitely still am), is trying it out. The one thing I was surprised about, is that the blade, if it’s a continuous blade, wont cut you. I’ve touched mine a couple times and it didn’t hurt. Even just knowing that gave me a bit more confidence. Good luck and happy cuttings!!!! You’re gonna love it!

    It's awesome to see a whole other universe inside each stone. They look nothing like their outside appearance. After a while, you'll start evaluating each rock you pick up for its cut-ability and thinking about if and where you want to cut it before you ever get it home. When I hunt now, I tend to give a second look to ones I used to throw back, because you start to learn what might be going on inside just from looking at clues on the shell. Cut many stones my friend and you'll get that 6th sense that lets you look inside of the rocks you collect while they're still whole.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding

      Oh I like that, the 6th sense, I’m already looking forward to getting out in the creeks to find some that id normally leave, cause that little rhyolite one with chalcedony blew my mind. It’s really so enjoyable to see what’s going on inside. It adds a whole bother element to collecting. Thanks mate!

      Thank you Sue! It’s just magnificent what is hidden within the stone. Even ones that normally wouldn’t look very interesting.
      If you have a saw you really should try it, it’s not as hard as it looks and the continuous diamond blades won’t actually cut your fingers which is what I was worried about. Just keep the cut straight without twisting and bobs your uncle. I’d love to hear how you go when you do try it out, you won’t look back I reckon! All the best Sue!

    My wife thinks the same about me, great video and happy new year. you’ll have endless hours of fun. I know I do. Meminer is my favorite rockhound on youtube. I like to polish rocks with a marble polisher, similar to Meminers flat lap. You polish the face and the rest stays natural but it’s hand held like an angle grinder and has diamond discs and a water attachment. Another great and affordable tool. Think I paid under 100 US for it and it came with the disc set already. Been using the discs for 2yrs now and never needed to replace any so far

    Glad to see you having a great time I had the same feeling of unlocking the beauty yesterday with a common opal. sometimes it will blow you away what is inside and you will be surprised what is ugly then really beautiful when cut. looks like you have good cutting skills and instincts for finding patterns in the rocks both great skills to have. I usually run water over my blade to keep temps low on opals and the blade lasting longest you can start simple with a garden hose and work your way up to a pond pump or something so you can recirculate water over the blade.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 лет назад +2

      Travs Guide
      Hey brother!!!! I saw the opal cut and final product dude, it turned out beautiful! That feeling is priceless though isn’t it. Just like exploring the stone and geology of where the stone came from I reckon.
      Thank you for the helpful tip too man. So it has a water reservoir that I keep at the full mark but do you reckon more would be better? Like you do with the hose? I guess anything more would help wouldn’t it. Thank you Trav, you’re always a wealth of knowledge my friend. I really appreciate it dude.

    • @travisguide4516
      @travisguide4516 5 лет назад +2

      Yeah the reservoir is a help but keeping all possible dust from being inhaled by adding water to the blade is the way I see it. making cooler cuts will make your opals not heat up and explode too but the benefits are faster cuts, smoother cuts, and longer lasting blades (and not inhaling rock) if you don't want to waste too much water put one of those little brass nozzles on the garden hose and aim it right on the blade. I noticed all the saws in lapidary class had water and on bigger saws they use oil. Don't forget to dry out the reservoir and the blade and the saw I left my rig in the rain and only a day will rust up the blade nasty luckily that blade was worn out did make it harder to change the blade after rust formed too.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 лет назад +2

      Oh yeah of course the dust! I didn’t even think of that! I knew it was for keeping it cool but rock dust would be super bad for ya. Thanks dude. I’m gonna see if I can find a brass attachment for my hose. I’ve filmed a few cutting sessions since this video so if you see me doing stuff and it looks like I haven’t taken your advice it’s cause they were already filmed. Thank you dude, mega heaps!

    excellent video rookie, I loved it, the saw is doing a great job, the cuts were great, loved them colours and patterns, you have a new way too see things opened up for you, as you cut more and more rocks you are going to find out heaps more about them. Some rocks you previously thought were dull will suddenly become sought after on your future fossicking trips.
    You asked your viewers for any tips, well here I go ...
    - be paitent at the end of the cut, slow right down as the blade breaks through the last few millimetres of rock, s-l-o-w , see the little ridge of rock left on the edge of the cut ? its where pressure on the rock BROKE the last little bit, you need to CUT the last little bit, and try to get a flat finish.
    - try to avoid grinding the rock on the side of the saw blade, its a no no, you are taking lots of life off your blade. I know its tempting to do it, i really do. Find yourself another method of grinding the rock. There are (dry) tile grinding discs that fit on a normal angle grinder, they are called PVA discs, they come in various grits, available at bunnings, they will grind off the dags and leave a not bad finish. (ensure to wear a dust mask). There are various other ways as well.
    - I couldnt really see the water resevoir properly on the saw in the video, but change it often, and flush out if possible, too much grit will build up in it, if grit of a hard rock gets transported up to blade while cutting a soft rock its not ideal, (you can get away with it, but not ideal)
    - this next tip is hard to explain - when you need to turn a rock over to complete a cut, dont turn it completely over (if possible), turn it only a quarter turn, or one third turn, try to gently roll the blade through the existing cut, using the blade in the cut to orient the rock to the exact same angle as before it was turned, (i warned you it was hard to explain), this will avoid the ridge of rock left in the middle of the face.
    - and finally, make sure to enjoy this new skill more and more !!
    cheers,
    kev
    ps. thanks heaps for tagging me in video !

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 лет назад +4

      Oh mannnnnnn!!!!!!! Seriously! Thank you Kev! Seriously! I’m not sure but I think I’ve said it before, I wish I lived closer to where you are so I could come and just watch you work on stones. I’d learn so much. But short of that, this is super valuable information and I’m so grateful man.
      The rolling of the rock on the blade as you cut, the one you said was hard to explain, I will definitely try that out next time I’m cutting. Thanks so much dude. I really mean it!!!
      I genuinely appreciate it Kev. I reckon one day I’ll make a trip up your way, and hopefully get to meet ya. Take care man and thanks again. So much!

    I feel your joy and discovery as you play and admire the rocks, too! I'm like a kid in a candy store when I see rocks. I'd sit in a parking lot looking through the gravel if it's nice enough! When I lived in Old Mexico, I would gather obsidian that way!
    I bought my tile saw a few months ago and am eager to use it soon. It's a bit chilly here in New Mexico for getting all wet which I will not be able to avoid!!!
    MeMiner is so cool! That's who affirmed my choice to go for a tile saw and not spend gobs of money on fancy stuff.
    There is a mix to put into the water which lubes and cools but not as heavy as saw oil. I'll come back and add on the info when I've done some looking into it.

    What can you say about that, sit down and catch your breath, chill with a tinny.
    Noice cuts mate, the second cut can give you a good indication of how nice a cab will be, holding it with the corner vertically and letting the light shine through.
    Selection before cutting is important and you made good choices, the flip over second cuts were very good for your first time as was your rough shaping for a pre cab, don't forget to bevel the edges before tumbling so you get a nice dome on the finished cab.
    Good job brother.

      Ahhhhh yes! Okay awesome! So a bevel around the top. Do you reckon there’s a good degree of angle as a rule of thumb? Like 45 degrees or less?
      Thank you man, you are a wizard symon! A rock wizard!

      It's my pleasure, sometimes the obvious solution is not so obvious, it often just takes a prompt before it becomes an instinct.
      Keep at it my friend, it's a laborious hobby but the rewards are in the voices of those who see your finished work.

    • @symonsheppard5519
      @symonsheppard5519 5 лет назад +2

      Rookie Rockhounding
      It's not always the rock you have chosen but more the way you chose to cut it, that can be the difference between a nice rock and a thing of great beauty .
      The angle of bevel will vary and is dependent on the thickness of cab, a thin cab will need 45 degrees or less a thick rock will sometimes require more than 45 degrees but that is again depending on size, a wide cab can look to bulky with a steep bevel depending on the pattern of the rock, lines, circles etc, the best judge is you, hold the cab at arms length and you should see the shape within before you cut.
      It sounds strange and a bit hippie but it really will work.
      Good luck and thank you for the compliments, not completely deserved I'm sure.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 лет назад +1

    Hey you did a great job! MeMiner Rocks! Hey the great thing about a tile saw is.....it won't cut your fingers. You might want to get a loop so you can look inside your gemstones, to see how to get a better cut. I hope you have a great day.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 лет назад

      Hey bud! Thanks dude! Yeah meMiner is just frikin great hey.
      So when you say a loop, do you mean one of those little field magnifiers? I literally just bought one yesterday. How do you use them to help with cutting? Do I look for a grain pattern sort of thing?

    • @1catfishuntermiller753
      @1catfishuntermiller753 5 лет назад +1

      @@Rookie_Rockounding Yes look for striations, and wet your stone I look through to see what you can see in there, sometimes you can see pockets of druzy so if you would like to cut through the druzy, or leave some of the druzy so you don't cut down the middle of it, you want to pick the prettiest parts of your stones. You said that you would like to tumble them, but you can also use a Dremel, that is what I use it works okay, you can really shine them up really good. Hey I love going with you rockhounding, so to speak. Lol I would like to have what meMiner has, the loop is a must if you want to cut cabs. O you can also use the side of your blade to take out some of the marks your blade leaves. The gemstones you find are beautiful. The blue ones are so beautiful. I love your channel.

    All right bud! I'm gonna do my play-by-play, starting when you're cutting.
    Great choice for your first cut! Something simple, but with a few different elements (the white, the clear, the yellow...)
    DUDE! You shaped that like a *natural!* Better than I did for weeks! If I can suggest one more little step, tilt the piece at 45 degrees, and do a little edge all the way around on both sides. That really reduces the tendency to chip in the tumbler. Next time I'm cutting, I'll make sure to show that. :) I got a tripod from my cousin for Christmas, so no more tying the camera to a branch for me!
    The blade shouldn't be sharp. It's more of an abrasive that grinds material off than a blade that cuts. I try to do my shaping going back and forth between both hands (both sides of the blade), so as to not work all the diamond off one side while leaving it on the other. That *will* make cutting harder, and eventually impossible.
    DUDE The green breccia piece! Amazing!!
    Your cuts are very straight, and you don't seem to wedge at all for a rookie. I'm not sure if that's because you've left the table-top and put the guide-thingy on. If it is, I should consider putting them back on mine. I took them off to expose more blade to work bigger pieces. If it's not, you're a natural, and I'm a little jelly of your natural ability!
    Since you're using the tumbler to polish, don't leave those lines across the face from where you've adjusted the saw. They won't disappear in the tumbler, even with 5 stages of grit for 2 weeks each.
    I wish I could like this video more than once! You knocked it out of the park on your first swing brotha! I can't wait to see all the treasures you reveal!
    Cheers!

      Great advice Thirst! ✔ Folks like you are providing a lot of great advice to all us other folks around the world who have a passion for stones and pursue it often. Totally agree with the commentary, getting straight saw cuts using two hands on either side of the blade is usually a developed talent. My trim saw has a guide but I find freehanding easier except the cuts aren't as smooth. (nothing a nice 15" flat lap or high speed sander cannot clean up right?😁) Especially on the smaller thundereggs. Also agree with the kudos for RR's good first cuts, so much enthusiasm was great to see (helped me reminisce about the day I broke my proverbial "cherry" and cut from dawn to dusk) . Also, to reiterate another point you made for anyone interested to read it..the saw marks typically will not tumble out fully unless you sand em a little with 60/80 then 120 then maybe 220. After a 220 sanding on the cut surface it will tumble totally glassy smooth running in a normal cycle if the stones aren't banged up and fractured/cracked. I tend to cut small ends off rocks to see what's inside then tumble those small "heel" pieces and slab the larger portions of the material or just freeform cab the piece itself. Man I cannot wait to see him cut and polish the giant carnelian jelly bean and open up some of those larger chunks of rhyolite, chalcedony and jasper he and Benny pulled last season! Woot~

      Thirst Fast
      Hahahahaha! Dude I legitimately laughed out loud when you mentioned tying the camera to a branch! 🤣
      You’ll notice there’s a stand in some of the shots with a couple of pieces of cardboard attached to it... well, that’s my tripod hahaha! I made it that day off the top of my head. It’s an old microphone stand and I got two pieces of cardboard staples them around it so that my phone can wedge in between haha! Soooooo not professional at all 😂
      Okay into the rocks, man I love your blow by blow comments! Just so helpful. These are all tips that if you hadn’t mentioned it I’d have had to learn the hard way. I didn’t want to do a “how to” video because I don’t know much at all so these tips are priceless.

I joined a gem club many years ago and learned everything from cutting and polishing cabochons, silversmithing, and faceting precious and semi precious stones. @@Rookie_Rockounding one more thing, and only cuz I care...you might consider wearing a respirator mask. I heard you say you had grit in your teeth. If its traveled to your mouth, you've probably breathed agate dust as well. Silicosis of the lungs is a
      nasty way to go and your wife is far to lovely to be a widow any time soon😄 Take care my friend

      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 лет назад +1

      Oh I’m so glad you said that, so in another video after this one I mentioned silicosis and bought a respirator, I copped some flack over it but I wear it every time now. Thank you for caring to suggest it. 👌👍

      I think I got lucky with those cuts but I can’t wait to learn more about making stuff from the rocks we collect! One day 😉
      I’m glad you stoped by! All the best imari!

    I have a tile saw on my bucket list. My daughter bought me a Dremel with a rotery, so I'll be learning how to polish with that first. So, when I get a tile saw I'm thinking I will be examining the rock for the best cut that exposes the best view of its beauty. Also, just think how many points you can cut and shape for us wire wrappers to buy!

  • @CityRockhounding
    @CityRockhounding 3 года назад

    Wow, looks like a really nice tile saw. Mines a POS so I haven't tried cutting anything yet. But this video inspired me to try. Thanks for showing us your first time, these are beautiful inside. What a cool experience! I know for my saw cutting tile would blast water and rock all over me, lol, worth it!
