    You are a flippin genius. I am amazed at the enginuity that went into those cases. You should be selling the plans not giving them away. Let people download the code for $3 dollars each and I'd put money you would clear $100 a month easily. Unbelievable I take that back you are selling the code, good man. build some and drop them on Amazon or somewhere for people who dont have a CNC router like me.

    FYI: a little wax where the wood rubs together will remove the squeaking - alternately, prior to assembly if you dip all the pieces in a hot wax bath and wipe them down it would give a water resistant coating

    Isn't it wonderful how every now and then you stumble across a piece of awesomeness. For the past couple of weeks I've been thinking about getting together a CNC and have been browsing the different machines and set ups and just when my attention had started to wane a little I find this. So, I have a few questions for Silverback and these are as follows : 1) I'm in London, UK so what would be the cost of having a kit form for either/both boxes shipped over. 2) I see you have seperate prices for individual plans but is there any discount for both sets if purchased together. 3) I see you've used MDF rather than a 6mm ply, is there any particular reason for that. 4) If these boxes were to be lacquered or painted would micro adjustments have to be made to cut sizes to accommodate the finish. 5) How many more plans do you have or are working on. The reason for this question is I'm thinking that if you had paying membership it could reduce the price of the plans or remove it altogether, it may be too complicated to set this up but I think it would broaden your audience ( just a thought). 6) Very tenuous this one ; If I decided to purchase the plans and make the boxes and then wanted to market these (in the UK) would there be any restrictions or objections from yourself ? 7) Do you have assembly instructions and is there any particular CNC machine you would recommend or even any that you wouldn't.
    That for now covers all the immediate questions that came to mind from watching the video. There are a few more loitering in the background but I'll wait till I hear from you before I grant them an audience. Needless to say I love what you've done here, it's very much in the spirit of the old traditional joinery methods which is what piqued my interest more than the actual subject matter. If my arms could reach that far I'd be giving you a very warm pat on the back.

    I was a woodworker from age twenty to about thirty. Years before CNC. You should feel very gratified with your designs. Whatever your charge for plans are fair. Even with computer assisted design, many changes of things that don't work and need to be redone happen. Total redo's happen with or without a 3D modal. As you progress in your business, you may want to add a market and sales person. Somebody not shy about asking for the money, sometimes five times, can really move things along. Well done...

    so at $35 and $45 I pass. I see $10 and $15, because it is plans, just plans. Digital DL. The cost of material is 35-45 to make and finish so, 45-55 for a completed box. That I would do. i like the laptop box. Would buy and make it. But 10-15 max for a DL plan. I think that is fair. and lets say 25 people do buy it at cost now. How many more will you sell at lower prices? There you would get the people that buy and never build. The impulse buyer is the guy you need. But thats not your issue, you need to move dat product---move it move it......

    • @johnhansen975
      @johnhansen975  6 лет назад

      The cost of a sheet of 5.2mm or 1/4" MDF material is about $20 maximum, and you go through half a sheet to make the portfolio case. So buying the plans and the cost in materials you are under $50 for the finished case. Where could you buy a case like this for that amount? Not sure why you had to express these are "just plans" there is also the instructions and even the Sketchup file. A lot went into creating this package and I kept it to myself for 3 years before making a video about it. I wonder if the tables were turned and you created something similar to this if you would still feel the same. I don't want this to sound like I am angry or complaining, I'm just trying to express that just because something exists as a digital download it doesn't mean that equates to something less valuable. Once you use the plans and create the case, the plans do not self destruct - you can make another and another... If you own your own CNC and know how to make it do its magic, you can alter the files and add custom compartments to change this into a unique carrying case to hold whatever you want. This is what my goal was in making these files available. I included the Sketchup file as part of the download so that alterations can be made to better fit your personal needs. I want people to use their imagination and be creative to make this case into something they can call their own and truly have something to be proud of. Also, if you were going on a job interview and this case was holding your personal artwork, do you think this would make a bigger impression than if you zipped open a $500 leather portfolio case? This case would help your potential employer remember you even if your skill level was on the same level as the 5 people before you. Any edge you can gain on an interview is worth obtaining.

      These can be made out of anything that is flat. You are right, I like wood but I'm not a huge fan of MDF. I think it has it's place but it was what I had when I made my prototypes. I will be making some soon of a black material called Richlite. It is a product made from compressed paper and resin, should be pretty cool.

      I'm am thinking about starting up a site to sell these along with other plans I've made. I made these just to see if it was possible to make a complex brief case with moving parts all without using glue or metal fasteners - it worked better than I imagined. From the time I started drawing this to when I was holding the finished product in my hand was 14 hours. This is pretty hard to assemble though, I would have to make a video to explain. I might just take one apart, then put it back together.

    • @johnhansen975
      @johnhansen975  4 года назад

      This was an experiment to use only a CNC router using one material with no fasteners or glue. This case has moving parts so this was more about the use of material and the overall design than a woodworking project. It can be made of any flat material, not just what I showed in the video. I think it is amazing when people criticize something they could not do themselves. You believe that because a computer was used to create a project that it makes it less difficult? The most difficult tool to operate that I own is my CNC router. I've heard this argument before about if a CNC router is used that it isn't truly "woodworking" but I ask you, where do you draw the line? Is Roy Underhill a better woodworker than Norm Abram because the tools that Roy uses don't run on electricity? I know you are just trolling me, I just wanted to respond anyway. Happy new year!

    • @johnhansen975
      @johnhansen975  6 лет назад

      The only file right now is the Portfolio Case, the other will be uploaded (hopefully) later today. The cut file right now for the portfolio is nested into a 48"x96" sheet and it uses half of the sheet - you can get 2 cases from one full sheet. The Gamer case, because of the trays on the inside, uses a full 48"x96" sheet. You don't need a machine that will cut an entire sheet to cut these though. All of the parts can be pulled and rearranged to fit your CNC working surface. Keep in mind that for the gamer case, the largest piece is 12-5/8" x 19-1/4" so machine needs to at least accommodate that size.

    John can the standard briefcase be ordered from you already cut out and I would just have to assemble? How can I contact you regarding that request?

      Of course. I know not everyone has access to a CNC Router or a laser. I have made and shipped a few to people in the last few months. I am charging $200 for the portfolio case and $300 for the Gamer Card Case (assembled including shipping) so if you are interested, contact me at johnhansen1957@yahoo.com with your details and I can send you a PayPal request.

    Could you do something like this for Roleplaying Gamers like a Dungeon Master Box that could hold notes, dice and mini figures, maps etc. possibly fold open to act as the DM screen?
