I’m just hoping that TTYD’s remake does well enough that Intelligent Systems gets rid of their self imposed restrictions on original characters. I had this funny idea where a new entry has the Whackas return and start up a shop where they bang their heads against the wall and sell the comparatively smaller bumps. In regard to Super Mario RPG, it’d be unlikely but I just want Square to sell Geno and every other Mario RPG character to Nintendo since they don’t have much use outside of cameos. Would be neat to see Mallow and Geno become regulars in spin-offs.
Personally I hope one day the RPG (and Warioware) characters actually get used in Spin Offs like Mario Kart. Like I could easily imagine Lord Crump and O'Chunks racing on bikes side by side, Mimi doing a trick where her animation is horizontally rotating her head. Like if I were to use just the old RPG characters, with 3 from each game, we could have an amazing roster of characters like... SMRPG: Geno, Mallow, Booster Paper Mario: Bow, Kammy Koopa, Koopa Bros TTYD: Goombella, Lord Crump, Vivian Super Paper Mario: O'Chunks, Mimi, Dimentio (or Nastasia) Superstar Saga: Cackletta, Prince Peasley, Popple Partners in Time: Shroobs, Shroob Princess, Kylie Koopa Bowser's Inside Story: Fawful, Midbus, Starlow Dream Team: Anastasia, Dreambert, Broque Monsieur and honestly even if people don't know these characters, it's good advertising for them to check out the old games, as honestly I think most people just enjoy choosing a cool character rather than knowing who that character is with most rosters.

But anyway, the many signs that Nintendo seems to be very much listening to and even asking for fan feedback on this game series, is terrific. And it's definitely sad that such a good questionnaire is only being released in such a small amount. Getting a small response pool can be dangerous.

Damn this survey is insane. I always find myself on these kind of surveys very indiferent, sort of a "eh, I dont care", but damn the multiple options were like "cant I choose everything, please?!" Although in my opinion maybe like a more complex "Super Paper Mario" style combat, with a better use of resources is something that looks very tempting, at least for me . And as Action RPG like is a territory Mario hasnt really explored that much, I would like to see more of that, as I felt like Super combat wasn´t really exploited to its full potential. Just...No puzzle combat this time, please.

The questions about whether you prefer the familiar characters to act traditional or unique aren't as separate from each other as you interpreted them. Choosing the "I prefer even side characters like Toads to be portrayed in unexpected ways" implies and includes the option above it for familiar characters. That's why the word "even" is there. Basically "I want everything vanilla, I want only important characters to be unique, I want all characters to be unique" So voting the third option is easily my pick. Also the "which game is your favorite" was specifically listing only the games that particular user had played before as answered in a previous question, as the user posting it admitted. So it will offer options for any of the ones you played.
Nintendo is branching out to movies as well as video games. They've capitalised on the huge financial success of The Super Mario Bros Movie. It's no coincidence that we're getting Princess Peach: Showtime and remakes of Super Mario RPG, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Thousand Year Door. I can genuinely see a new 3D Mario, Luigi’s Mansion 4, a new Peach and even a new Donkey Kong as titles in the first years of the Switch's successor. The most unanimous complaint that the Mario movie received was Luigi's screentime. Judging by the storyboard leak, it looks like Nintendo and Illumination are taking this criticism on board and having Mario and Luigi go on an adventure together. What better way to hype fans up by bringing back a beloved RPG series which is about Mario and Luigi going on adventures together?
Weird as it's gonna sound I hope they turn the "Super Mario RPG" styled Mario series into a Kingdom Hearts like cross over idea but with Nintendo properties instead of Disney. I know M&LSS was supposed to have character cameos but the fact that SMRPG had "living" cameos a la Link and Samus, that means they could cheekily reference them "visiting Mario's world" if they went that route. Star Road where wishes go feels like it could be repurposed as a Lanes Between which is basically "Kingdom Heart's version of outer space" and help facilitate the introduction of other franchises "worlds". Wishes could be equivalent of "light/darkness" in hearts and those that give up on their wishes become susceptible to dark forces or maybe positive/negative wishes could be a thing. Would love to see a game with the sort of production value Subspace Emissary had (assuming the next Smash won't do it) I feel "Mario and Luigi" would be better suited focusing more on expanding the "Mario verse" and introduce and exploring races and regions introduced in other games or creating their own not to mention go more in on the bros' dynamics. Paper Mario and especially Dream Team were two games that really let us see the insecurities in Luigi's head and his inferiority complex with Mario more closely, maybe we could see Mario's insecurities for once? Would love to see explorations of Peach/Daisy, Wario/Waluigi and Bowser/Jr/Kooplings but in a more focused effort. "Paper Mario" can be more of the "out there" with more abstract settings like Flipside/Flopside (and most places really lol) in SPM and/or settings with a lot of history outside of the Mushroom Kingdom like Rougeport in TTYD and for a lack of a better term more "risque" ideas and plots since it's "friendly" art style can contrast so much better with crazy and pretty messed up events (SPM Ch.6 and 7. come to mind not to mention Grubba and Hooktail eating folks onscreen and Bobby's sacrifice in PMTOK being taken with actual weight). Imo it gains the least from exploring the Mushroom Kingdom more than it already has as well. Sorry for the weird takes and wall o' text haha
Could the change be the making and success of Wonder? 🤔 Like, it does feel like ever since Bowser's Fury (or maybe even Origami king) that the strangle hold on Mario's creativity has been loosening, culminating in Wonder last year being THE most creative, unique, and weird Mario has been in a while. And we know Wonder had been in development a while since they "had no deadline". I guess I'm saying that Wonder (in and out of development) may have had ripple effects on Mario and his spin-offs.
They're trying to see if there really is interest in Mario RPGs, they want to make sure that people aren't blowing smoke and know what they want. Again people better buy TTYD remake, if it sells well that will officially tell them that this is what people want, Mario RPG sold 3.14 million. With those in mind not only Paper Mario might go back Mario and Luigi might come back too. TTYD honestly deserves another chance due to it being on the Gamecube which had a small user base where as with the Switch it's massive.

Talking in general, I love seeing just one of these aspects super fine tuned. I love the story in Super Paper Mario and great gameplay is what will keep me coming back, but to me, a great RPG, and a Mario one at that succeeds at all those aspects mentioned. Again, doing enough to be a good game will be enough to satisfy me, but I always found that idea as a strength towards memorability. When it comes to characters, it’s complicated. I want to convey to Nintendo new characters is good and exciting, but I do feel there is a side to old characters that we never get to see otherwise. I would like a healthy blend that puts character writing above all.
I've checked my email, and unfortunately, I haven't seen the email foe this survey, but ultimately my answers would be more-or-less the same as yours, especially for Paper Mario. I've played every game in the series, and while I don't hate the newer games...i vastly prefer how they handled everything in the older ones. But my biggest hope is M&L returning. I just really want a new game in the series already, and if it came out on the next Nintendo system, I'd buy it just for that
Something slightly unrelated that I wanted to get off my mind: So you know how you tend to swap between let’s plays and streams regarding your videos? I feel like having a good way to distinguish them is to have let’s plays be for completely new and big games, and for live streams to be for old games, re-releases, and small entries. Livestreams are more of a chill and talk session and that’s really the only reason they gain a lot of views, plus you feel like you’re missing out on a live stream, if say, you wanna avoid spoilers. Let’s plays are the opposite: People watching Let’s plays can join at any time without missing any thing, and they can examine your playthrough well instead of just chilling and talking. I feel like Let’s plays have that charm that other styles fail to offer. So yeah, stream the TTYD Remake, but if a new-style Paper Mario game comes out, either let’s play it or stream in parts like TOK.

There was a time when they made surveys before that led to WarioWare: Get It Together! announced around a week later. This survey will be more exciting, especially how well the Mario RPGs became. I'm hoping for Mario & Luigi getting a return or a fresh new Mario role-player that has all the assets that made both SMPRG and TTYD successful.

The original version of Bowser's Inside Story and the original version of Superstar Saga are my personal top two Mario & Luigi games. I really wish the survey didn't lump them together with their remakes because to me, the remakes are bottom two. I am not a fan of how the difficulty rebalancing was handled, and I'm hoping Intelligent Systems will avoid making the same mistakes with the remake of The Thousand-Year Door.
