After thinking about it for about 500 hours during boring train journeys, I have come to a very shocking conclusion about the ultimate fate of everyone's two-tailed fox.
For those who wonder why I don't do more voice-over videos, see this as your reminder on why, I'll be back to text-only commentary after this. Possible seizure warning for the part around 5:25.

Playing with sonic and tails in 2 and 3&k, when tails dies, he flies down from the heavens to respawn and continue with sonic. It happens in 2, 3&k, and in adventure 1, probably in sonic 06 as well

Well, 8-bit Sonic 2 has the basis for You Can Do Anything in the Green Hills zone theme.
he had to make due but he could have also been able to mix revenge into there because at the end of regular sonic 3 sonic would think he killed off eggman until sonic and knuckles came round again

When you started talking about stages of grief in a weird theory I was going "oh no" but as you kept going and got to the last stage and were like "surely I can pull something out of my ass" I couldn't help but smile even if I am sick of fan theories about things like this. That self-aware ending of how silly the whole video is really made it for me.
If it weren't for Launch Base, this would actually seem legitimate. At least, until the viewers learn that Flying Battery originally took place in between Carnival Night and Ice Cap.

I don't mean to be rude, but a lot of people in the sonic fanbase don't really understand humor. I'm not saying all of them don't, I've seen/met some hilarious sonic fans but I see a lot of obvious joke videos that gets tons of dislikes like a "SONIC ADVENTURE 3 TRAILER!" video, and it ends up being a video with sanic or some meme or something fake just for laughs.

Yeah, I think that's the problem here, I've sort of forgotten how obnoxious the Sonic fanbase can be. Like I got so used to it, I became desensitized to how they are, but the effect this video is having on them has been a reminder.

As a kid, I assumed that Tails drowned toward the end of Launch Base Zone. After that, he doesn't participate in the boss fight and is completely absent from Sonic and Knuckles.
And then in Sonic Adventure, the first main game since S&K, the first thing Tails says to Sonic is "Long time, no see."

I know what launch base represents. The cups he jumps into represent that Sonic, reaching this point in which he already accepted tails passed and after having fun, doesn't know what to do with his life anymore, and feels that he's just going in circles over and over again. Then Knuckle's bomb represents that he thinks it's finally the end, but he finds Robotnik. Now, this represents the final struggle of his life to completely get over it and the jump in the end represents that he's finally happy again.

Yellow: Super
What if the yellow Chaos Emerald is yellow because Sonic knows that Super Sonic (he's yellow) can move faster! He could catch Eggman in the beginning cutscene with time travel!
Cyan: Bravery
You know that cyan looks like water? Well it could be a water gem! Water is one of Sonic's fears, so it can make Sonic remove his fear of water!
Green: Nature
Without Tails, Sonic would not have been able to save Mobius and it's ''NATURE''!
But green is ''NATURE''! Green can save Mobius... and Tails.
Red: Power
Red looks like a powerful and independent color. But if red's traits match the red Chaos Emerald's powers, then it's powers can make Sonic powerful.
Purple: Memory
Note: I just thought of an explanation, so don't go say "U DID PURPLE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!"
Memory is something important in Sonic games. You can use it to make up strategies, but if it's important to you, it's important for Sonic. A memory Chaos Emerald could make Sonic remember everything in the past, future and present. He could grind through bosses because of his godly knowledge. 1 Chaos Emerald could lead Sonic to the other 6!

Y'know how white emits a glow? That glow could be inside Sonic's heart. The cheer of Tails telling Sonic to keep going from the afterlife...

Or perhaps, since hallucinations are already coming into play, Sonic can just be hallucinating these hits, and the robots are actually going down faster than Sonic thinks, or he's fighting them himself and not realizing. Now that we deal with hallucinations, Sonic just becomes an unreliable narrator

Wait... What? Sonic & Tails (Sonic Chaos) and Sonic & Tails 2 (Sonic Triple Trouble) was a logical continuation to 8-bit Sonic games. You can say that they was in different universe too and Sonic & Tails series was Sonic 3 & Knuckles of 8-bit universe.
Also, Knuckles one punch K.O. against Super Sonic was explained in SA series, there it was shown that being a Master Emerald guardian, Knuckles can use it to channel and stop Chaos Energy.
BTW, Tails can fly forever in boss sections of Tails Adventure.

Oh... I got something. Sonic isn't happy in the end. Don't you see he punches the screen in the end? He finally understood, that it was ours, players fault. that he couldn't save Tails. Because... Come on. Sonic wasn't fast enough and didn't gather all emeralds? That's bullshit. So Sonic (before dying from falling down) tries to kill us in his last attempt.
The Sonic and Tails games are the continuation if you saved Tails in Sonic 2. If you failed, according to this guy, then you get the "Sonic Only" timeline in Sonic 3.

Launch Base isn't any stage of grief, it's just a "final" stage to show that Sonic has gotten over his darkest emotions and accepted Tails' death. Launch Base symbolizes that now Sonic is ready to face his biggest enemy once again in a final showdown, all he has to do is to finish Robotnik off and redeem himself... at least temporarily.
EDIT: Damn, someone already made that point, I was too slow.

The thing about Sonic's depression in this reminds me of 2 years ago when I first rode the Tower of Terror. Afterward I had a really long fear of going back on it and staying there, or everything was a hallucination and I was up in there, but when my birthday came I felt a lot better and decided that nothing was a hallucination and began to have fun.

It's also worth noting that even if you're playing as Sonic alone, Tails may make a surprise appearance after finishing Act 1 of Carnival Night and stay with Sonic, until either of them die or he moves on to the next zone. Could this be Sonic having another hallucination?
I've seen this "glitch" occur many times on the GameCube version of Sonic Mega Collection ( which was the version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles that I owned ).
But Tails is at the very beginning of the game regardless of who you pick? And again at the ruins where he physically picks you up and flies you around for the boss.
I'll admit that the super form being punched out by Knuckles doesn't make sense no matter how you spin it, as Knuckles can't do anything to SSJSonic later in the same combined game, nor in the comics, if you care about those.

Who's to say that playing Tails only is a good ending? Perhaps that actually means that Sonic is dead from Tails Adventure (I know it can't) or Tails only Sonic 2.
One, Knuckles is the guardian of the Master emerald, you know, the emerald that makes the Chaos emeralds look like mere batteries? Since he's been around it since birth, it's given him power, likely giving him power to knock a Super saiy- I mean Hedgehog off guard with a punch. Two. Not only was Sonic running into him, but it was a sucker punch! If your running towards someone, and they suddenly punch in the face, no matter how strong you, or they are, you'll gonna be at least taken a back from it. Knuckles got a cheap shot in, and that cheap shot's the whole reason Knuckle's alive, because if Sonic just ran into him, God knows what would happen to everyone's favourite boxer.

The 8-Bit Sonic 2's bad ending is non-canon unless you get it in the game. The reason Tails' plane is in 8-bit Sonic 3 is here is not only in Sonic's mind, unless you got the bad ending in Sonic 2. All your actions are for YOU yourself, and they're only canon for whatever you got, and only for you.
You are not the player, YOU are Sonic.

This is a joke but it almost seems legit.
That was the saddest time in any Sonic game for me when Tails comes back to help you fight the boss of Marble Garden then drops you in Carnival Night and flies off.
Pretty nice concept/theory. I don't think too many of us have ever thought of it this way. Good to hear a new perspective. Definitely something to think about.
I remember when you play Sonic & Tails in vanilla Sonic 3. When Sonic jumps into the Egg-o-matic to chase Robotnik, Tails jumps into the water and dies. And you never see him again for the rest of that game ....... or the entirety of Sonic and Knuckles.
So in the Canon timeline, Tails is RIP at the end of Launch Base Zone.

Fun fact: The 8-bit Sonic 2 came BEFORE the 16-bit version. Thats why the Sonic 2 beta is using the sprites from the 8-bit games.

So then, why does Tails catch Sonic at the end of Sonic & Knuckles, regardless of emerald/super emerald collection? I know this theory isn't really meant to be taken seriously, but after Game Gear's Sonic 2, it goes on to Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble. Along with Sonic 1, all four are Master System ports, and Tails is in all of those.

Wow, ive never imagined it that way. It seems pretty wrapped up, except for one, little, insignificant detail: Sonic AND TAILS appear together at the beginning of Sonic 3, and so on for the rest of the game! ITS A 2 PLAYER GAME FOR FUCKSAKE!!!

This could be a legit theory, if the final stage of grief was revenge, like how Sonic beats Robotnik at the end of Sonic 3, because he was the one who would've killed Tails in 8-bit Sonic 2.

This theory actually makes perfect sense.
Launch Base would be the only real zone, after going through the other 5 phases Sonic arrives to avenge Tails and stop Eggman.
Mushroom Hill would represent good old memories or the passage of time (represented by the change of palette).
Lava Reef represents a possible hatred that Sonic believes Tails has him. The first act being anger and the act 2 being coldness or rejection (Sandopolis act 2 represents the same as Lava Reef act 1).

I lost a friend who was missing before her body was found, so it was a "multi-cycle grief"....which I see S3K as representing, with the second part being the "once death is confirmed" part. (Mushroom Hills is both the passage of time, but also, DENIAL, because...MUSHROOMS! Flying Battery is ANGER...because of all the military-caliber hardware, all the guns, bombs, and flame-throwers there. And it's hard to get away from it...represented by how difficult it is to find a special stage (unless you know the secret!) Sandopolis is BARGANING, but your ideas seem built on a foundation of sand....it's also where you're haunted by your regrets (the ghosts in the second act), and like the first barganing zone, has a relatively high number of Special Rings (ok, so does Mushroom Hill, but....), Act 1 of Lava Reef is DEPRESSION. What is traditionally represented as being full of lava, at least in the Abrahamic religions? HELL! You're emotionally in HELL! Act 2 though is when things cool off, ditto the Hidden Palace. Sky Sanctuary is ACCEPTANCE, it has both intricate carvings and greenery...stuff also seen together in CEMETERIES! However, you are also....fighting yourself, you are your worst enemy (represented by Mecha Sonic Mk II) Not quite sure where the Death Egg or Doomsday zones fit, though!
@@raakone After Launch Base Sonic could have gone straight to Death Egg and then Doomsday, being real zones in his adventure.
Also, I think that Flying Battery could be a "false peace" on the outside you are fine but a little affected, but on the inside everything is much worse.
Sandopolis are mistakes from the past, for being in ruins and ghosts in act 2, the light represents that no matter how hard you try to shake it off, it always comes back.
At act 1 of Lava Reef it is self-hatred or hate towards Eggman but then Sonic calms down he reaches act 2, which represents an internal doubt whether to end Eggman forever or not.
This continues until Act 2 of the Death Egg, where the constant change in gravity represents the good and bad of Sonic's decision.
In the Doomsday Zone, Sonic decides to leave Eggman's fate to chance.
