By the way, I was thinking of the name Angantýr when I wrote the vowel in the sword's name (it ought to be short, Tyrfingr, and of course in translation the -r at the end will usually be left out). For the record, the name of the sword has nothing to do with the name of the god Týr, but might be related to the name of the Tervingi, a Gothic people mentioned in some Latin histories (The Saga of Hervor and Heiđrek has a lot to do with early Gothic history).

The cigar was drenger!
Jackson Crawford thanks for addressing the story of Hervor and her father in different vids, it’s such a crazy story to read from so long ago!
Patreon level Godmode: an evening with Dr. Crawford sitting around a fire, smoking cigars, and listening to a "best of" selection of tales from the Edda's and Sagas.
Hail Dr. Crawford!
That cigar looks tasty and you made me want one. Interesting video as always, doc.
I waited all day for this. Thank you Dr. Crawford
What luck, my copy of Njal’s saga arrives today. A curated journey it is! Thanks for the videos Dr. Crawford.
This is Thrand! Great video and been trying to explain this to people for years. It also is how Norse luck or hamingja works other blessings and curses effect your luck or things that happen to you.
ThegnThrand Hail Thrand! Good to see you on this channel. Dr Jackson is the best for Old Norse and Viking culture without the BS that too many people believe.
ThegnThrand hi, I'm a big fan. You motivate me to collect scandinavian weapons and such
Viking Toaster Thanks and I feel honored you were inspired by my videos.
ThegnThrand Skåll. Stay drengr
Dr. Crawford just reached a totally new level of cool with the cigar!
A totally new level of drengr*

Brilliant comment!
Megaloceros May Odin's eye squint as if blinded by laughter from your humor
hahaha i know right
I bought your translation of The Poetic Edda, I can't wait for it to come in!
No doubt that the saga is metal as hell.
I love your channel. Very cool-a cowboy and an old Norse expert. Your topics are always interesting and engaging.
The fact that you are a Last Podcast fan makes me love this channel even more. :D
Thank you again for a most informative video, Doctor Jackson Crawford! I live for these.
Last Podcast on the Left! Awesome t-shirt
The only trustworthy person to turn to for Norse related anything
Have you heard Hrungnir's Heart be referred to as the Knot of Calin? I have seen it a couple times and I am trying to figure out if accurate and the background on that
Interesting to know that the Norse held this belief. Some cultures and religions still teach that a simple bad thought is a curse. Some even teach that it's enough to cause someone to become possessed by a demon.
Found your channel 2 days ago and have been binge watching your videos. Hoping to learn some old norse from you! This might be a odd question, but theres a scene in the show Vikings, ivar the boneless is saying "do you know who i am? You cant kill me. I am ivar the boneless." Can you make a short video on how to pronounce what hes saying?
He screams "ek am Ivar the Boneless" at some point in there which is only Old Norse in that he used "ek" instead of "I" so I wouldn't put too much faith in the rest of it being reconstructed Old Norse.
Kate Elliott interesting. do you have a guess to what language he was speaking?
A quick Google says they apparently have an Old Norse specialist, so why they went with "Ivar the Boneless" instead of his name in ON, Ívarr hinn Beinlausi, is beyond me. I presume the rest is ON, but I don't know anyone other than Dr. Crawford who would be able to tell the difference between that and Old Icelandic.
Kate Elliott Ah ok. i knew they had a ON specialist on set teaching the cast how to speak the language. When you said it wasnt all ON i was wondering what it was
Hell is the southern neighborhood of Stjørdal (where the Trondheim Airport is located). You can tell your students to go there!
Interesting video as always. Didn't need the cigar, but keep the great content coming!
All these videos are awesome, I really love norse culture, but my mother tongue is the spanish and the traslations of the eddas and other books in my lenguaje aren't the best (especially because names are usually changed in some editions or left like they are in others so is hard to understand) I really appreciate be able to clear my doubts about everything.
a metal reference haha perfect!
What's on the shirt?
The Last Podcast on the Left www.lastpodcastontheleft.com/
Hell yea
So we must presume that they believed the norns listened to curses to some degree.
The cigar was a nice touch
Heh. I was recently in an adapted storytelling performance of Njal's Saga (edited, of course, but even so it still took about six hours of storytelling by various people.) Regarding Njal's assessment of Gunnar - Njal clearly had some ability to see the future. As always, it begs the question of whether the future is set or changeable, and how much of his own death he sees (does his sight fail him or does he embrace his own death? I suspect the latter.)
I guess the question is was Njal able to see Gunnar's fate as a curse, or just a line of events (i.e. if he did x his fate would be y, if he did z his fate would be a?)
Enjoy you cigar, I like that you are authentically you. Hey crazy new patreon fees costing you small supporters? You may want to look into Makersupport. They don't have standards and guidelines that will censor you. You can also post videos there as well. I love the free market. I hate to see you lose small supporters. Which I had planned to become after the new year.
The good news is that Patreon came to their senses and aren't implementing the fee changes at all: blog.patreon.com/not-rolling-out-fees-change/
Kate Elliott thanks Kate, good to hear.
Sometimes I come here for the knowledge. Sometimes I come here just because you are a fallegur maður.
A dwarf disguised as a fish.....
So what are we smoking today, Doc? Can't quite make it out
SmokeShow looks like a Stogie
Mate, the cigar might be laying it on a bit thick here.
But interesting video nontheless.
Ae Norist I must disagree! The cigar, with the distant mountains and rugged hills, evokes a very powerful ambiance to the subject matter ^_^
It's just a cigar..
