Preview by Ajay Pal Singh
After winning the T20I series 2-0, with the final game washed out in Johannesburg, South Africa are now set to take on Pakistan in a three-match ODI series. The first game is scheduled to be played at Boland Park in Paarl on Tuesday (December 17).
The big names are back for the hosts. Temba Bavuma will lead the Proteas in the ODIs, with Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, and Keshav Maharaj also returning to the squad.
Bavuma was in fine form during the recent Test series against Sri Lanka at home, but to manage his workload with an upcoming two-match Test series, he has decided to miss the series opener.
In his absence, the opening role is likely to go to Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi, the latter opens the batting for the Proteas in Tests and has done well in the red-ball format
The middle-order pretty much pick itself with the likes of Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs and Heinrich Klaasen in the squad.
The pace-bowling department will be bolstered by the return of their champion bowler, Kagiso Rabada.
Marco Jansen provides balance to the side as he can swing the new ball and hit big shots with the bat down the order. The experience of Andile Phehlukwayo is also there for the hosts.
Pakistan have retained almost the same squad as the T20Is. Mohammad Rizwan will captain the side, but the visitors also have some long-format specialists making a comeback.
Abdullah Shafique, Kamran Ghulam, and Naseem Shah are the new additions to the squad, while Jahandad Khan, Abbas Afridi, and Omair Bin Yousuf have been left out
