***** Of course with skill and effort you can achieve good rhythm with any drum machine. However, nothing compares to the 808 sound kit in terms of rhythm and "bounce".
Back in the day people in my circle (Jazz/Fusion/Prog Rock) laughed at these things. Its amazing to see the price these things go for these days, and the records they ended up on!
Classic Drum Sounds. I Love this Unit. If you want to " Really Hear It " - Listen to the SOS Band ( produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis ) Tracks: Tell me if you still care, No ones gonna love you, Just be good to me ( among many others ). I Never get tired of these drum sounds. I have had a Roland TR-707, Akai MPC, Alesis HR-16 ( now have the Roland DR-880 ) - with Many of the Old TR-808 Sounds.
I finally broke down and bought mine. I just love the sounds of this machine. It's an amazing piece of history. I can't wait to make some music with it. :) Great video as always! :)
To think that the Roland drum machines were actually a commercial failure and a cheeper alternative to the more expensive Linn LM-1 is mind-boggling considering how influential the TR-808/909 is within modern music
This thing... it changed hip-hop... forever. So, I will present a poem. *The Beat that Kicks* There once was a beat, That made such a feat, Some people said it was crap, But when we boys hear this thing, we clap. This filled producers with joy, The joy of a playful boy, They used those with joy, They thought: "What a nice little toy."
Found mine at a thrift store and they told me I was the geek to check this out. "Do you know what it is", they asked? Bout dropped right there. Missing the tempo knob, timing but no sound, and TWENTY FIVE US CENTS to save it from the dumpster. I roll my eyes when I see them on eBay, and like I said I'm getting it fixed next year, I found my repairman and got it budgeted. I KID YOU NOT. I could be given a Maserati and the rights to all the oil in Dubai and not feel luckier.
@01100011011101010110111001110100 patience...I live on a fixed/neutered income and got shingles New Year's Eve then the vet told me the cat's kidneys were starting to fail. Don't forget how blessed I was that my roof and yard, etc got cleared after the nearly three feet of snow since last month, stuff is collapsing and we' haven't seen a winter like this in at least 20 years. It's been 6-7 years since I got it and I've waited longer. At least we'll have enough water this summer.
Still THE reference for electronic drum sounds. These must have been sampled and resampled and tweaked and retweaked a million times, but coming out of the real analog circuits it sounds so much sweeter.
This was the sound of the breakdance/ electro years..83-90. Crikey. I was a teenager, i didn't realise tik now how much of the sound was from ONE machine. Like the Mantronix reference in the vid.
I remember walking in a music store in 1986 when I was only 10 and playing with one and then My Father walking up and looking at the price tag and said ""stop touching it before you break it !!!!!Its funny how you never forget things like that.
I'd like to add a few more 808 drumbeats that are probably lesser known but that I really like the sound of: at the beginning of "Self Control" by Laura Branigan; "Automatic" by the Pointer Sisters"; "One More Night" by phil Collins (of course! :)); "Rock You Gently" by Jennifer Warnes, and there's TONS of other occurrences of it throughout the 1980's and early 90's that I've heard and love.
KLC aka The Drum major of old No Limit Records from 1995-1999. Beats By The Pound aka The Medicine Men production team very first drum machine with Major hits songs : "I'm Bout' It, Bout It, "No Limit Soldiers", "Make 'Em Say Uhh!", "Hoody Hoo" and "Down for My N's"!.
Dominic Mendez Do you know how much music across endless genres was made with this machine while J Cole was a fetus? Superior music, I might add. Learn some music history.
+Poodleman Do you rap? , or have any money in the bank for that matter.? don't hate . I ain't dissin you, or him just asking a question . ? why beef over RUclips ?
Like I need to lie to make a fan out of a nobody like you? I simply commented on a call I got dumb ass. Let me guess now that I am telling you we bought the TR-08 and have all the sounds in a pack you can buy I am lying about something that stupid also? What do you think happens to stuff en people die? A kid here in Springfield just bought an old house for $18K (yea old and needs to be fixed up), needless to say he found a stamp collection in the garage. The 4 major stamps in that collection will likely not only pay for the house but also the remodel. And that reminds me I need to call him now and see if he brought them in so I can photo them and get them on to ebay. See something good came from your shit talking.

This thing changed music forever
Still does the business 😎
TR-808, bro.
No... No no.
You don't hear this cool sound in today's music.
AKAI mpc 2000: *coughs*
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUCK IKR
Why yes it did. Wish I had one
This is the probably the cleanest 808 out there.
Man, you take good care of your stuff!
I hope! ;)
thank you
The condition of your 808 is quite amazing
***** :)
this thing was so advanced in the 80's and tbh it still kind of is now.
:)
Thank god for the 808, this machine should def be in the rock and roll hall of fame
The Roland TR 808 has the best "rhythm" out of all the drum machines ever produced...and that's why it's still popular today.
And because the bass hits the hardest.
***** Of course with skill and effort you can achieve good rhythm with any drum machine. However, nothing compares to the 808 sound kit in terms of rhythm and "bounce".
+TonySummerz Very used in freestyle,hip hop,rap.
lol
Yeah, it’s the swing that makes it so perfect.
The sounds of the 80's.
:)
RetroSound I wish I can go back in time I'll be a monster
+ the LinnDrum, the DMX and the Simmons Drums
@@Obs23456 not at all sorry if you didn't know but 808 drum kitsch are a thing of the past
@@Obs23456 808 drum kits really aren't maybe the kicks just a little bit but no the rest of the drums
RIP, Ikutaro Kakehashi-san.
His TR-808 invention (and other inventions) revolutionized popular music and popular culture as we know it.
Can't Believe this thing is still $4000!
+AtraktMillyonz Music (Atraktmillyonz) believe in god and the 808 :D
These actually were sold for only $1200 back in 1982. They've actually increased in price.
+chris walker $1200 in 1982 is $3020 in 2016. That means it's increased in price by 1/3.
+AtraktMillyonz Music (Atraktmillyonz) Look at it as buying a vintage Violin...not so many available
+ebiljebus Adjusted for inflation it has more or less stayed the same price as in 1980 actually. A slight increase in price
Listening on 808 day 2021! You know your music!
✌
this is the reason behind 808s and heartbreak.......damn
Back in the day people in my circle (Jazz/Fusion/Prog Rock) laughed at these things. Its amazing to see the price these things go for these days, and the records they ended up on!
I bought my first 808 from a Pawn shop in Montreal for $240 back in the 90ies. Today you find them for $4.5k
The machine that made 80s new wave AND hip hop.
yes
Even Roland brought this back with the TR-8. And it (my father's) absolutely SLAPS
