Watching TV with the PSP 1seg

  • In 2007, a very interesting add on was released for the PSP in Japan, letting owners watch TV broadcasts on the system. Although it only works in countries that broadcast using a specific signal type, it does in fact still work, making it a bit more practical in the modern day than something like Sega's analog Game Gear tuner. Let's take a look at the unique add on, as well as the cool colored red PSP that it came with.

    I actually bought this tuner on my very first trip to Japan in 2007. It was September and PSP-2000 was just coming out I got it on launch day ( which are legendary in Japan ). Was pretty epic. And I knew it would be useless back in Europe. But I wanted to experience watching live tv on my psp

      I think I would've done the same thing had I been there at the time. I was always very interested in the PSP's various features back in the day.
      And I know what you mean. I had a good experience getting the Switch back when it first launched.

    It works in South America, since if it is 1sec and the Japanese - Brazilian norm is used
    - Brazil
    - Argentina (Some channels don't work well and no audio)
    - Chile (Some channels broadcast at 15 FPS, but they work fine)
    - Uruguay (Does not detect some channels)
    - Bolivia
    - Paraguay
    - Venezuela (Yes Same in Venezuela)
    - Ecuador

      1seg is the mobile version of ISDB-T, it's a japanese digital TV standard. It's only used in a few countries, like Japan, and here in Brazil we also use ISDB-T, all channels have a HD transmission and 1seg. If you're in US or Europe this add-on won't work since US uses ATSC standard, and Europe use DVB-T

    It's weird how you think about something and turns out you're not the only one to do so. 2 days old video. Perfect.
    Good quality material, english language, mote than enough informative, hands on WORKING content.
    It really seems like a whole different era. Where things were created for the people to enjoy & make life simpler. Things that one would actually want instead of passive-agressively forcing people to buy proprietary memory cards & other things to get into digital only content 15 years too early.
    Little on the side about psp as a multimedia device in general.
    It's a shame psp didn't use bigger 4:3 screen & minidisc instead of UMD. It would have made so much more sense for media consumption. Music, photo/video & games on one portable console.
    UK & japan were fond of minidisc, unlike USA, which had rushed release without proper marketing. The device itself was chunkier than SONY'S OWN d-50 discman from 1984, d100 from 86 was even more compact, slightly bigger than cd alone. By 1990 CD's were already much more affordable & widely spread.
    If they had waited until the device shrink. It would have grown big for 5 years before mp3 were a thing, with proper law enforcing maybe even fending mp3's off until psp's release.
    By then people would buy their kids psp's like crazy if it would have TV, music, photo, video & gaming capabilities, basically for the same price.
    But enough of my ranting, thanks for the video.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  2 года назад +1

      Thanks!
      And I think the reason they didn't go with minidisc is because it might've been easy to pirate. Not that it mattered, since it was way easier just doing it with the memory stick anyway.

  • @PhirePhlame
    @PhirePhlame Год назад +3

    What's going on with the record function probably wasn't a failure to recognize the memory unit, but rather that it may require MagicGate to work. MagicGate is a form of copy protection used by PSP and the Sony Memory Sticks, which is implemented in hardware via a component on the reader and a counterpart on the stick itself. It should go without saying that those microSD adapters don't have MagicGate hardware on them like real Memory Sticks do.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  Год назад +2

      Yeah, someone else mentioned that and I’m sure it’s the reason. I wasn’t aware that was something to look out for. Few things:
    • 1seg maximum quality is 320×240 at ~20 FPS, to be honest a really good quality, considered the data is channelled trough a bandwidth of 450kHz.
    • Not being able to record on the PSP is due fact that the adapter doesn't have Magic Gate compatibility.
    • Sony made a lot of good stuff for Japan, but being Sony, actively compartmentalizing thing is in its CV. I still remember when I had to repair my PSP in Romania and because Sony at the time supported only west Europe, even buying games through the store was nearly impossible, let alon repair it.

He also said that the technology you mentioned is in the phones that Disney has released exclusively for Japan, and he also said that you have tried it on the DS and PSP as in this video. As for my question; you tried the DS version on the 3DS and it worked, but what about the PlayStation Vita, since it has an application called Adrenaline that provides access to the PSP system, can the PSP version also work on the Vita? Could you at least try this? 😁

    • @LegendOfGames

      It probably wouldn’t work on the Vita since they have different style USB ports. I guess you could try using a micro-B to mini-B adapter, but between that and jailbreaking your system to use that Adrenaline app, seems like a lot of work to get something like this running.
