Agree. Scott Rollen was slightly above average in his career. They might as well let everyone in. The HOF should only be for the select few who are truly great. That should be for any sport
I've been a Cards fan since 1960. I think Ken Boyer was the best Cards third baseman ever and is not in the HOF yet compares with his equal for his era Ron Santo of the Cubs. I think a difference maker for Rolen was his defense like an Ozzie Smith. Maybe Rolen went up because the level of competition changed for him. Most look at offensive numbers and anyone attached to the steroids era has really been hurt in voting. You do make good arguments. The player I think of as a good ballplayer but not HOF worthy is Keith Hernandez. When I think of HOF worthy I think of Willie Mays and Henry Aaron.
Maybe they should start a Hall 2 for very good but not great ones. Boyer would certainly make that list, as would Rocky Colavito, Roger Maris, Waury Wills, Frank Howard, Harvey Kuenn, Bill White and Joe Adcock from that same era. I'd put Rolen there too. The Hall should be just for the great ones, like Mays, Aaron, Ruth, Cobb, Gehrig, Williams, Musial, Feller, Koufax, Gibson and others of that caliber.
@@hiramnoone I do understand what you are saying. In St. Louis some look at his exceptional defense like an Ozzie Smith or a Brooks Robinson, but it is not everybody. Ken Boyer stands out better for me because his best years were with the Cards and played longer for STL whereas Rolen played longer for the Phillies and had good years there as well. What happens is when a Ron Santo makes it and you saw them play then it makes you wonder why not Ken Boyer. It's the watering down that was discussed. That was a good list of good ballplayers when I was a kid growing up in the 1960s born in 1953.
I don’t think Santo belonged, but it was far worse that the VC waited until after he was deceased to let him in. The VC has made some correct decisions in recent years like Hodges, but then there are all the head scratchers.
@@Butterandbacon Also going on is players like Mays and Aaron are like 100 percentile hall of famers, but what is the 75 percentile hall of famer? Gil Hodges was a good choice. @@larryloveless2967 Yeah, it has been watered down when you consider the greats against players like Rolen who was nowhere near of that caliber of player. Certainly a good one, but not a great one which in my opinion should be the only sort elected to The Hall. Likewise Santo for the ten years following, so certainly an argument for all of their being in when you consider Rolen.
As a lifelong Cardinals fan, I don't think Rolen is a HOFer either. He was incredible with my Cards. Won multiple GGs, was a great hitter, and won a WS. But his numbers just aren't HOF numbers. 8 GGs at third base is a lot, but he only had just over 2000 hits and 300 HRs. It used to be you needed either 3000 hits or 500 HRs to get in. You may not say Scott Rolen and Babe Ruth, but the BBHOF standards were dropped a long, long time ago. The veterans committee inducted their buddies for years and they've come along and put lots of pre 1900 and negro league players that it's hard to say how great many of them were. Who'd you take, Rolen or Mazeroski/Aprricio/Hunter/etc
Yeah he’s the best defensive third baseman ever and a great hitter. He absolutely will get into the hall of fame because he deserves it just like Scott Rolen. No one wants to give credit for outstanding defense. Third base now has 16 players. Rolen is at worst number 10 and top 4 defensively. 8 gold gloves, 7 time all star, a key player in the Cardinals winning a World Series and making it to another. He’s a HOFer now so yinz need to stop crying like little girls.

Why are baseball fans so blind to defense. In hockey a goalie never scores but they are HOF’ers. In football defensive players are too but in baseball it’s overlooked.Rolen is definitely a HOF’er defensively on top of his 1200 rbis and 300 hrs
Rob must not know how important defense is. Rolen is the best I ever saw at 3B and was a very good hitter. Ortiz gets in and couldnt even play 1B or run. Sheffield was a great hitter, would probably be in if not for steroid rumors, but was atrocious in the field. There’s way more to the game than just hitting stats. Anything where humans are making decisions is going to be flawed one way or another.
He has 8 golden gloves which is 3rd all time for 3rd baseman. Mvps are a single season award and don’t tell you how good a player was for a career. He’s top ten in his position and at worst top four defensively in that position. That doesn’t mean this guy has watched Brooks Robinson or Mike Schmidt play so he can easily be the best defensive 3rd baseman he’s seen. Rolen was a key player in St. Louis winning a World Series and making it to another. He’s now a HOFer regardless of what any of you haters say lmao. He’s also only the 16th 3rd baseman to ever make it in the one hundred and whatever years the game has been played. He definitely deserves it regardless of what Rob’s clown ass thinks smh.
I think WAR is a fairly reliable statistic and Scott Rolen has a higher WAR than Tony Gwynn, Manny Ramirez, Carlton Fisk, Eddie Murray, Tim Raines, and Jim Palmer...But even WAR can't convince me that Scott Rolen belongs in the Hall of Fame with all those guys.
The only reason for that is because you ignore defense. . Rolen was outstanding defensively and third base is a defensively important position (as was Fisk). Eddie Murray, not so much. He also did everything pretty well. .855 OPS on top of his defense. All those guys have similar WARs. Truthfully I would put Rolen last on that list but they are all clear HOFers. Rolen is not really even a bubble guy. Rolen is a pretty clearly better than Sammy Sosa who Rob is adamant should be in.
Rob stole my HOF criteria. If I have to think about you being a HOFer or not then you’re probably not one. It should be easy. The only time it should be some hesitancy is if the person was disrespectful to the game in anyway. It’s the best of the best. That’s why when people say Eli Manning and Philip Rivers are HOFers I lose my mind. No way those guys belong in the same sentence as Montana, Elway, Young, Peyton, Brady etc
I agree with Rob to a certain extent but he said Schilling didn’t get in because he never won a Cy Young award. Well, neither did Nolan Ryan but he’s in the hall of fame. And trust me Nolan Ryan in my opinion is far superior than Schilling, Cy Young or not. But Rob needs to think about that one.
What's amusing is it is pretty easy to prove Schilling was a better pitcher. Schilling had a 127 ERA+ Ryan had a 112 ERA+ Schilling was a significantly better run stopper than Ryan. The argument for Ryan would be he has an 81.3 WAR vs Schilling 79.5 because Ryan pitched 2000 more innings. But Schillings peak 7 year WAR was 47.5. Ryan's was 38.2.

Rolen had a higher OPS than Brooks Robinson. Brooks got in first ballot 92%. Rolen hit for a higher average and OPS, hit more home runs and averaged more RBI and runs per season. You can't tell me Brooks Robinson is a first-ballot hall of famer and Rolen is not a hall of famer period when Rolen was a better player than Brooks.
Mike Schimdt is the greatest all-around third baseman. Wade Boggs is the best pure hitter at third base. Brooks Robinson is the greatest defensive third basemen. And Scott Rolen doesn't belong in the HOF.

I agree with Rob, Rolen was a solid player, but a HOF no. If he’s in Dave Parker definitely should be in. But that probably won’t happen because he was involved in the drug scandal back in the 80’s
These guys are clueless...... In the next couple of years Beltre and Helton and Ichiro will go into the Hall. Rolen was a more valuable player ( per year) than ANY or those guys .Easier to compare Beltre because he was at third .Rolen better defensively than Beltre and based on OPS + better offensively and I would say considerably better. Rolen's on base percentage was really good.I always thought because of that that Rolen should have been batting IN FRONT OF Albert Pujols not after. offensively .Yes Beltre played longer and that has some value ,but Rolen considerably higher level of performance.

Yep. There are years when they don't vote for anyone. When in other sports a least 5 guys or gals get in. MLB Hall of Fame is weird as hell.
When you consider the era Boyer played in, he along with Eddie Mathews (500 plus homers was his ticket) were the best at their position in the NL for a stretch of ten years. Likewise Santo for the ten years following, so certainly an argument for all of their being in when you consider Rolen.

Rob stole my HOF criteria. If I have to think about you being a HOFer or not then you’re probably not one. It should be easy.
