Dwight was great, but it’s very easy to see that Jokic is a basketball savant while Dwight is not and never was. The difference is like the difference between Larry Bird and Paul George.
Also, Jokic averages more steals than Howard did in general. And you should never forget, that another aspect of greatness, is how you affect your teammates with your play. Jokic makes his teammates better is far more significant . Then there's triple-doubles. Jokic has more triple-doubles than any player ever in the playoffs except two players all time. Jokic has like 121 career triple-doubles. Howard has one. One
Dwight was never the same after his back injury. Plus, the Orlando teams were catered to his strengths and weaknesses. He was surrounded with long shooters.
This is also true of Jokic and the Nuggets, though. Almost every team caters to their star player. Jokic definitely has more help than Howard ever did in Orlando, though.

Maybe because in Denver he is playing with the best playmaker in the league and the best passing center of all time called Jokic who is making him look good?! Porter Jr is an average 3rd option who is streaky at shooting and pretty much does nothing else on the court and Murray is 18-19 ppg regular season player! Y’all forgetting Jokic literally creates more turnovers than 85% if players in the league, he gets his hand in and deflects a lot of balls, now imagine Howard who had literally no ball security and only 2 go to moves in the paint, he would get ripped of the ball so much lol. Why don’t you compare their advanced stats from heir first 8 years in the league, you know the stats that take into account every aspect of the game? 😂 😭 we all know why, lol Howard wasn’t very efficient, however his D was elite and that is why he was able to remain positive a lot of games in career. Look I’m not knocking Howard, dude is criminally underrated and is a top 20 center imo of all time but let’s be honest Jokic around 10th already and on his way even with a slight dip in stats to finish as a top 5 player of all time and will be a top 3 center.

Dwight Howard is one of greatest basketball players of all time. 5x first team All-NBA, 3x defensive player of the year. Whooped Lebron's ass in his prime. Not sure why the basketball community hates this man. He was Ben Wallace on steroids. Just an unbelievable talent.
@deelak2329 they definitely hate on him... its criminal he's not top 75 of all time. Dwight was a problem before he hurt his back. And dont forget... these 2 matched up against eachother in the 2020. Without Dwight they dont get past Denver in the conference finals.
@@KNByam Centers traditionally and historically do not shoot the basketball like a smaller player does. They score closer to the basket without using jumpshots. It's only fairly recently that you have these 7 footers trying to take 3s. Plus, when you're as strong as dwight, trying to shoot a jumper would be more difficult because of how small the ball feels. It's similar to how guys complain about playing with a girl's ball since it messes up their shot.
i just think they both underrated.. but Howard didnt have to go there and try to talk down on Jokic's skillset and accomplishments.. Howard gets underrated when he wasnt on the 75 players.. Jokic is underrated coz people keep questioning his greatness as a player
Jokic is to be compared to the greatest big men, while Howard is just with the great big men. This is what Shaq has been saying for years. Dwight had Top 5 talent, but settled on being barely better than Mutombo career-wise.
I would never say he was better than Mutombo. Mutombo averaged 3.4 BPG and 12.5 RPG for a decade (‘93-‘02), the greatest era for dominant big men ever, by far. Olajuwon, Barkley, Ewing, Malone, Rodman, Kemp, Robinson, Shaq, Mourning, Webber, Garnett, Duncan in their primes. Dwight averaged 13 RPG and 2.2 BPG for a decade (‘07-‘16) which was the weakest era ever for dominant bigs in their primes. Dwight was a better scorer, but he also shot 13% worse from the FT line. He was a far, far worse teammate, and had far, far worse intangibles than the great Dikembe Mutombo.
@@southsidedon9037 Don’t matter, you play and do your best in the era you’re in. Dwight had his era, Jokic is in his, and Jokic accomplished much more than peak Dwight Howard.
@@johnnyblingg The competition and context matters! Joker plays against less competition in the worst defensive era in basketball...all of these guys have inflated stats.
Dwight Howard was my favorite basketball player until he hurt his back and was traded to the Lakers. He had an impact on the game as a big man. Orlando was his best run.
Jokic is far greater. Jokic is an elite defender and by far a better offensive player. Also, Jokic neutralizes Dwight's rim protection because the Joker is a stretch big.
I wouldn’t say elite defender. But he’s not a slouch on the defensive end. He’s smart but he isn’t elite I would say a bout average to very decent ,good but not great. Jokic is still better.
Dwight was a massive underachiever. When he first started I thought he was going to be an all-time great, but he never got close to that level. Jokic on the other hand is a classic overachiever. He makes up for his lack of physical gifts with his mind, hard work, and working on all the fundamentals. Howard just thought he could coast on his physical ability and never really worked on his offensive weaknesses. All in all it's not even close. Jokic is already an all time great.
Dwight didn't underachieve. He came fresh out of HS and made 5 1st NBA teams, 5 defensive teams, 8 all stars, 3 DPOYs all before back surgeries. That's success.
People who keep bringing up defense, please understand: in basketball, when you have one of those rare offensive players who does it all at a supreme level, defense isn't really in the equation. Sure it's even better if the player is a great defender, but when you're as good as someone like Jokic, it's just not that a big of a deal - Jokic could be a worse defender than he is, still no basketball team in the universe would choose Howard over him. It's just how it goes when you're that good. Plus, in reality, he's a pretty good, smart defender.
I agree with this take. The only issue I have with people in this thread are all the kids talking like it's ridiculous to even have this discussion. Like Howard was really a bum. If you give prime Howard the team that Jokic had this year, he has a ring. He almost got one with a worse team, against tougher competition, too. Give the man his roses.
Not even close. Don’t really think Dwight is being serious about this narrative. Jokic literally makes the right play every time. Not to mention, he likes girls
Jokic is better than Dwight offensively but Dwight is way better defensively than Jokic. He won 3 defensive player of the year awards and took a team less stacked than what Jokic had to the finals. Your comparison of Clyde drexler to Jordan is way off because both were offensive players were as Dwight is a defensive player being compared to Jokic who is an offensive player.
@nimrod LOL don’t you dare put Howard and Jokic in the same sentence. Jokic is the best player in the league and carried a team to the finals and won a chip. Dwight making it to the finals once in the easy east isn’t 1/50th the accomplishment

I agree, but only because most people aren't smart enough, unbiased enough or willing to put in the research. You can most definitely compare players from any eras, but you have to be smart, unbiased, and able to consider all factors, such as rule changes, trends in the game, etc. As far as the rest, the stats and footage are available for most legends. You can literally watch them play.
For Dwight to say this after Jokic won the chip and dominated the entire playoffs like that is wild. There’s a reason he’s in China. His peak was elite tho but that don’t make him a better player. This a clown discussion
Howard is underrated historically. I think he was in an in between area between the shaq/hakeem/ewing/admiral Era and the jokic/embiid/bam/kat/sabonis Era. He was at the beginning of a change in the game and he played in a system that had 2 to 4 shooters on the court at any time if you look atbthe make up of his team (turkoglu, Lewis, Nelson, jj, etc). He really need more post moves but never one to go to work. Not to.mention he wasn't a puck and roll player which I think he did himself a disservice with but understandably, most roll guys are now ONLY roll guys. I think Howard never had a coach that could really develop more polished parts of his game
Dwight Howard was sent to work with Kevin McHale and Hakeem Olujawon, but he was too accustomed to playing how he did. He was used to relying on his height, strength and athleticism to dominate. This was when he played in Houston.
@ninocrown3247 that's why he should have gone to shaq. Love the dream and res0ect McHale but to utilize his ability he may have had to see shaq or even the admiral. Physical specimens
He had no post moves no handles to post or hold the ball enough not to lose it in the post , spin moves jukes bank shots like Tim Duncan any creativity to make his own shot it was all lobs follow ups

Dwight Howard was definitely a slightly taller version of Alonzo Mourning. I feel if Zo started in the early 2000s like Dwight, he’d have a similar career. Zo had to suffer thru the gauntlet of great centers in the 90s. Dwight didn’t have that smoke in the 2000s. Shaq was getting older. Boogie was the only other great big, I can think off. Jovik accomplished more in the last three seasons then Dwight did his entire career . Dwight went to LA and played with near prime Kobe and couldn't make it work.
Dwight came to LA after tearing his pec in less than a MONTH needing surgery. To pretend like that didn’t derail him is dishonest. Shaq had a vendetta against Dwight for TAKING it, he wanted to give it to someone.
@@rickyrobby8133 think Dwight adopted the nickname in hopes Shaq would notice and bless it in a passing the torch from one era's best center to another. I believe Jokic is more valuable in any error. But let’s not forget Dwight Howard at one point was routinely smacking shots into the third row of the crowd
They just said Dwight was Phenomenal Defensively.. and Good Offensively! Just using what they said in this Video... that means he was Better than Jokic.. or atleast its Debatable.. They are literally Contradicting themselves! Think about it..
Look at who Jokic won a championship with- Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon. Meanwhile Dwight couldn't win one with Kobe or James Harden and had to hitch a ride on the LeBron and AD train when he was washed to even win one. Dwight didn't get the opportunities because he had no offensive game. During his prime with the Magic, a Dwight post-up was the best outcome for the defence. Watching Dwight post up was painful- 10 seconds of trying to back his man down only to throw up a clumsy jump hook and brick it. Jokic's teammates loved playing with him, Dwight's teammates couldn't stand him and once he was no longer athletic, teams couldn't get rid of him quick enough- Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington, Lakers and the 76ers all got rid of him after 1 season. Dwight Howard is one of the least liked players in the league. Always complaining about touches when he had zero offensive game.
For me, it’s really close. But I would give it to Jokic because of his versatility offensively and typically, offense is what makes a player a “great player.” But Dwight is definitely in my Top 75. He was played.

I want to say this in the 2019 season when Dwight was with the Lakers he shut Jokcic down everytime especially in the playoffs. Check it out and I’m a Sixers and Clippers fan. Chris how can Joker be better if Dwight was shutting him down in his latter years? He wouldn’t have had a chance in his Orlando years

Fellow St. Louis native here, we used to have the Hawks, and we had an ABA team called Spirit of St. Louis, which happened to be the great Moses Malone's team before the merger. We'd love to have an NBA team, but it's tough now that we have an MLS team (top of the Western Conference, I should add), plus we have the Blues, which hockey season is right alongside NBA season, along with the XFL team. So no matter how much we love basketball, we'll probably never have a team here again 🙃
That's a great sports city but maybe the Spirits experiment changed the NBA's mindset about a long term investment there. Ain't that the same Spirits that had Marvin Barnes and Maurice Lucas too? One who was a junkie and the other that put hands on people? 😂
@@lizzydaddy yeah that's the same team 😂 but we weren't the only city/team with that issue at time. For us, it really comes down to where would they play since the NFL, XFL, and MLS basically have the same season 🙃😒
I just don’t understand why defense is always used to discredit a player. We knock players for having all-star and all-NBA selections without a ring, but somehow having 10 or 15 all-defense selections without a ring is better than winning a championship. It makes no sense, Dwight is a top 75 player all time, no doubt, but for all of his defensive prowess, the guy never won a championship until he became an afterthought on the Lakers, his second time around with the team.
Defense makes a team better, 3 straight DPoy, yaw on bath salts, he took Lebron out and lost to Kobe...... yaw crazy, he took ORLANDO to the finals.. who was the. 2nd best Magic player with him?
Dwight should be on the top 75 because of his defense, he impacted the game defensively, still don't understand how AD is in the top 75 never lead a team to the finals
People say Dwight is underrated, I’m from the Orlando area and while there was a stretch orlando was relevant due to him mainly he also benefited from a system that was so ahead of its time with a stretch 4 and a lot of shooting in general. If anyone is underrated it’s the general management and SVG for building a team that played analytically better than other teams. Dwight deserves the credit for his defense and a rim runner but the gap between him and guys like embiid Jokic shaq ect are sooo distant. Dwight was more in line with a guy like Yao Ming, mutumbo, and as Brou said Alonzo mourning. He just benefitted so well from a stretch of good health and a perfect scheme. There’s a reason he fell off a cliff playing with Kobe because he never was a win first dedicated heart of a champion type of player. He cared more about playing to have fun then playing to win and the silliness in Taiwan proves that even they’re calling him out for playing outside his naturally gifted game
I never understood guys acting like "doing it with twos instead of threes" should get you more credit. Being able to hit threes is a skill, so why should you get knocked for that?
Dwight wasn’t a “winner.” He didn’t take things seriously like someone of his talent should. Always either goofing off or sulking about something. We’ve all played with guys like that.
Remember what the late Kobe (rip) said. Dwight was more interest in the LA night style than the game itself. He could be built like a superman but he was more worried about the Clark Kent lifestyle
Dwight has to understand he didn’t get post up attempts because he had zero post up game . Hell , he had zero Offensive game besides rebounding and lobs …he’s not Jokic level this is laughable
The difference is that you can put Jokic anywhere on the floor and he can dominate the game. Guys like Dwight and Shaq and most if not all other centers dominated the post. Some good passers in their own right. But didn't necessarily dominate the game with it. Jokic is the ultimate swiss army knife as a true center with no hops. Its absurd. Respect.
Dwight barely scoring 19 per game in his prime. Didn't Bill Russell average more points in the Post. Howard was a good rebounder that is where his came ends. He was never a good shot blocker either cause when he was older he only got like 1 per game. So in his youth when he was only 19 years old could he jump to block shots. But anyone can do that when they're 19 years old. Skill is when you are 30 years old and average 3 blocks. howard was never good at anything. He was just an ok rebounder cause no one was guarding him.
I vaguely remember a beef between Shaq and Dwight. Shaq regularly ripped Dwight and influenced public opinion, turning a lot of people against Dwight. In the end, I thought Dwight deserved everything Shaq said about him. There is no comparision between Dwight and Jokic. Dwight should just stay quiet. It's like Pippen ripping Jordan or Rodman ripping Bird. The guy that's doing the talking just looks foolish and undermines their own career.
That may be true for the bubble, however, the Joker learned from that, became an NBA champion and aside from a few holdouts is generally recognized as the best player in the world today, meanwhile Dwight is out of the NBA, playing China and speaking of bitches, he is telling us "It's nobody's business where he put his wood at." With the 3 ball, the passing and the ability to initiate the offense. And not much of a defender. They are so different it's hard to compare them.

Also Yoke is so great offensivley that its insane, no knock on DH12 he is a great player but Yoke is an all time great like top 15/20
Prime Howard was obviously much better defensively than Jokic. Howard lead the NBA in rebounding 5x and blocks 2x. He also was the defensive player of the year 3x and lead his team to the finals one year! He did a lot of things better than Jokic
Dwight was better than ppl give him credit for. There was a period in time when he was the no doubt best Center in the nba for about a 5 yr period. However, his peak does not compare to what Jokic has done the last 3 seasons.
But damn dwight was a beast. don’t yuck on the guy.
Dwight locked his ass up in 2020
Dwight didn’t need post moves or the ability to shoot in Orlando. He would put Jokic in foul trouble.
All I remember is Shaq being mad as hell that Dwight started using the superman nickname and bashed him everytime he got the chance and Shaq gladly relinquished the superman nickname to Giannis . Jovik accomplished more in the last three seasons then Dwight did his entire career . Dwight went to LA and played with near prime Kobe and couldn't make it work.
Kobe didn't to want it to work with Dwight. Kobe took out everything he wanted to take out on Shaq on Dwight.
What he didn't realize was that King Petty saw prime Dwight as a potential threat to his legacy and that he would start quite possibly the most one sided fued of all time. Shaq was on TV every week shitting on Dwight, and meanwhile Dwight trying to be his friend, sending out olive branches to Shaq, and even dropping the Superman nickname at one point.
@@jessepaiz6356 Shaq is a good guy from what I’ve heard charity wise and if he’s your friend, but on the other hand he can be a serious bully. Like when he started doing the same thing to JaVale McGee. He was just on tv ripping him for every little thing on weekly basis.
I think the petty part is SO ON POINT about Dwight and him. I bet Dwight really looked up to him early on too since they were both big men.
Jokic just concentrates on winning and remains humble. Respect to jokic
DWH NOT A BOMB U TALKING LIKE HE IS
Joker has better offensive skillset. Dwight had better defensive. 👍🏽
For me, it’s really close. But I would give it to Jokic because of his versatility offensively and typically, offense is what makes a player a “great player.” But Dwight is definitely in my Top 75. He was played.
I'm sorry it's not close, Jokic is in a whole universe ahead of Howard offensively, impacts the game on multiple levels.
@@joelvicente8148 Recency bias. There’s a gap yea, but not as far as you think
Dwight didn't have any respect for the game it was so obvious when he went to the lakers, dude had no skill n kobe was like wtf dude can only jump n he had the worst dunk contest so shameful ruined the MJ freethrow line dunk 🤦♂️ just shameful
Now you are just talking skill vs skill dude.
What about success, accolades, winning, stats and then some.
@@StayTru101 Jokic has already established himself as a legend of the game there is 0 "recency bias" with this guy you have to stop with this crappy term for him, he has set a bunch of historical performances and records for several seasons that Howard would have dreamed of reaching. His effectiveness and his current dominance will go down in the history books of the NBA and he's far from over.
Shawn Kemp was MORE than Dwight
Skill vs athleticism.. when you get the perfect mix 90s 6x champ MJ.. skill+will+minimum athleticism=Bird
Problem is Dwight Howard underperformed..which sounds ridiculous considering his accolades. Goes to show you how much potential he had
I’m taking prime Dwight over Joke. Also it depends on what the team dynamic looks like.
I want to say this in the 2019 season when Dwight was with the Lakers he shut Jokcic down everytime especially in the playoffs. Check it out and I’m a Sixers and Clippers fan. Chris how can Joker be better if Dwight was shutting him down in his latter years? He wouldn’t have had a chance in his Orlando years
But that Howard would've locked jokic up and Dwight would've went at and kept jokic foul trouble trying to hold that man at that time lol Dwight the reason they beat them in the bubble
To be fair that was Jokic's first serious time in the playoffs and the Lakers had 3 bigs.
@@joe97nsx yea I agree but that Dwight in a head to head match up with jokic it's going be tough idk
So no one noticed that Rob Parker has on an “Magic City” Hat 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It's weird that nobody will give Dwight Howard his credit.
Jokic lead his team and more versatile Dwight Howard didn’t
It's actually close because of Howard's defense vs Jokers assist but Joker did get the chip. Howard knocked off the Nike puppet Kobe Bron Finals but they lost to the Lakers.
It’s not close at all. Jokic is a top 25 player all time
How is it close? Jokic is a 2x MVP. Finals MVP. And he’s only 28.
This should not even be a discussion. DH and Jokic should not be mentioned in the same sentence. Jokic is leagues ahead of Howard. PERIOD
Dwight Howard deserved to be in the top 75 easily.
Dwight have a championship too.
Defense makes a team better, 3 straight DPoy, yaw on bath salts, he took Lebron out and lost to Kobe...... yaw crazy, he took ORLANDO to the finals.. who was the. 2nd best Magic player with him?
Howard didn't have the post footwork
I'd take Bill Laimbeer Defensively over soft Dwight howard
Just do the match up and u ll see who is better
I never understood guys acting like "doing it with twos instead of threes" should get you more credit. Being able to hit threes is a skill, so why should you get knocked for that?
Dwight certainly looked the part but he had a very limited arsenal on offense. Great defender, mediocre offensively.
Dwight wasn’t a “winner.” He didn’t take things seriously like someone of his talent should. Always either goofing off or sulking about something. We’ve all played with guys like that.
He wasn't a bumb
Fox Sports radio is in good hand with people as Rob Parker and Chris Broussard, people who actually know basketball and are respectful.
Rob didnt cover that Magic vs Cavs series in 2009 ..his ass was on First Take debating Skip about the games giving his take lol
Remember what the late Kobe (rip) said. Dwight was more interest in the LA night style than the game itself. He could be built like a superman but he was more worried about the Clark Kent lifestyle
Dwight has to understand he didn’t get post up attempts because he had zero post up game . Hell , he had zero
Offensive game besides rebounding and lobs …he’s not Jokic level this is laughable
Dwight Howard is underrated, should still be in NBA easily and is legendary. Biggest top 75 snub.
He was just an ok rebounder cause no one was guarding him.
prime dwight struggled in the finals against pau and bynum, no post moves, no mid range just leaping abilityand strength!
The guy that's doing the talking just looks foolish and undermines their own career.
jokic was locked up by dwight in the bubble made him his bitch
That may be true for the bubble, however, the Joker learned from that, became an NBA champion and aside from a few holdouts is generally recognized as the best player in the world today, meanwhile Dwight is out of the NBA, playing China and speaking of bitches, he is telling us "It's nobody's business where he put his wood at." Dwight also specified "prime" and the Joker is just coming into his "prime" let's catch up when the Joker is at the end of his career and then we can compare their "primes." @@ryanr20091
Apparently the too 75 was not voted with the top 50 locked, whoever voted just kept the top 50 the same even if they never saw some of the people play
Dwight acts like he didn’t get a chance to post up… he did.. he just didn’t bother adding a post game to his arsenal… that’s on him…
It don't have to be an old player...ain't no way Dwight Howard didn't make it on top 75 over Damian Lillard and Anthony Davis
The disrespect on Jokic is unreal, Dwight was nowhere near as good as Jokic is. He can only dream of having even half the talent of Jokic.
How is this even a debate ? They must have absolutely nothing to talk about lol
Dwight you weren't getting many post up opportunities cuz you had no post moves dude
They are completely different players. Dwight Howard was a really defensive guy that was athletic so it enabled him to score. But Jokic game is all around. With the 3 ball, the passing and the ability to initiate the offense. And not much of a defender. They are so different it's hard to compare them.
Wrong! You guys just don't actually watch the league, both Eastern AND Western conf. players during the season as well as playoffs. Jokic has very good numbers as a defender. Hell, one game vs. the Heat, the EC champs, when he was the primary defender, they were like 3 for 16. Look up his defense +- numbers.
Dwight was literally good when he was on the hornets with Kemba. He still had a lot in the tank but league wanted more smaller bigs. This how I know they don’t know what they talking about. Howard defense was just as good as joker offense. And Howard have a ring too.
Broussard is right on the money with D12 being viewed as a clown or a silly person. Rob tryna act like that was a reach smh.
