  • I have officially fallen down the rabbit hole of the wide world of Disney Bounding. Where Disney Adults dress up as their favorite Disney characters from Mickey Mouse to Minnie Mouse to Donald Duck to Goofy and everyone in-between to attend the different Disney Parks! We explore what Disney Bounding is, when it's appropriate and when it's not, the fact that some Disney Bounding outfits can actually be quite chic, and when it goes way way way too far.

If you're invited to the met gala by a designer you're required to wear whatever they choose for you. Especially if you're a brand ambassador. If you got invited by Anna Wintour or if you didn't get invited. You can purchase a ticket to the met gala. And send your stylist to choose clothes for you to wear to the event. But not all celebrities care abt fashion. And just approve of whatever the or stylist chooses for them.

I’m assuming the reason they don’t want adults walking around in full/convincing costume is that they like to control perception of the brand and experience of the characters EXTREMELY tightly; so they don’t want anyone (especially kids) seeing a slutty-looking princess, or Pluto having a beer and a cigarette, or whatever.

    • @1tmunar
      @1tmunar Месяц назад +191

As a person that worked as character many years ago, that is definitely part of it. But also, they don't want multiple versions of a character out at the same time, or at least the perception of that because it confuses the little kids that still believe the characters are real. So if I was Mickey on a particular day, I would not be doing a meet-and-greet at the same time Mickey was performing in the parade.

@@1tmunar Yes! I don't work at the parks but for a company that tries really hard to maintain character integrity in a similar vein. We've been booked for an event a few times, only to find that some other booth has the owner's niece come in a Halloween wig and old prom dress claiming to be Elsa and our very expensive, tidy Elsa with a wig styled by a former Parks stylist is literally twenty feet away, and we just have to make excuses for the next four hours. 😵‍💫

A really wholesome part of DisneyBounding is that many mascot characters are "un-glamorous" roles for new employees, to break them in (or if they don't fit the rigid height/weight/feature standards of a Face Character so you always get stuck in suits) . So when you're sweaty and miserable as an employee with a century of legacy on your shoulders as a waaaay less popular character and see someone gleefully sprinting at you with a lovingly coordinated outfit, it can make your MONTH.
I work with a girl who is ADORABLE but would never get the glamorous role as a princess, and she's small, so she was in mascot suits for most of her shifts. DisneyBounders can make or break whether you want to leave the profession entirely, some days.

Whist I’m not at all a Disney person I do really love the idea of “bounding” in general, not wearing a costume but having a themed outfit. Those girls being asked for signatures/pictures and being mistaken as princesses is also why you're not allowed to wear costomes. Disney wants full control of their brand and their costumed staff are trained to interact with the visitors; they dont want random people interacting with customers and representing the company.

  • @theplaybillbunny6305

Characters that work at the parks MUST stay in character the entire time they’re working. Adults are not allowed to wear full costumes more because it is a liability to the park. If someone goes up to a person in full costume who doesn’t work at the parks and they are not in full character it can cause the person who actually is the character at the park to get fired or like a crying child. The whole point of Disney parks is the immersion so if anyone is taken out of that it could look bad for Disney

So I’m a Disneybounder and I have dressed as many Princesses including at the Parks. The “no costume” rule is also for safety as they don’t want anyone in long dresses/skirts as you could trip or get caught in a ride.
The only time you CAN dress as a character is on special nights. I did dress in costume as Belle for Halloween and I did have parents and kids stop me which was cute but I never pretended to be Belle. Even on those nights you cannot sign anything as the character or take pictures with the kids.
Typically if I bound I go subtle:
Colour blocking on a dress, wearing a shirt in the character’s main colour, wearing my hair a certain way etc.
It can be a lot of fun but I’m also there for the rides and I don’t want my outfit to get in the way!

This is basically how I do the majority of my costumes (Halloween, cons, fests, etc). I either use clothes I already own or buy something (usually second hand, to keep costs down and also in case I never wear it again) that looks close enough to a particular theme/character. Slap on some ears or a wig and you're done. Fits way better than most costumes and it's made out of actual fabric, as opposed to the "one step up from plastic tablecloth" material that most store bought costumes are made out of.
As for the backpacks, I would imagine that it's an easy way to signal what you're dressed as but also super functional at a theme park since it's an easy way to carry your keys. phone, wallet, etc. I personally take a waterproof fanny pack to every theme park I go to, but that's just me.

I'll also say, there is a lot of similar stuff going on with people going to kpop concerts. Following a dress code, recreating a music video look, etc. When I went to see aespa I channeled some cyberpunk vibes like a lot of their MVs, and I saw many others doing the same.

Not so much now because they’ve added a bunch of other events like it, I’m told.
So Disney primarily monetizes nostalgia so a lot of these adults probably have fun and comforting memories of going there. These days, it’s so crowded in FL that it’s just no fun. I guess they make their own.

You did a really good job of being respectful and I appreciate that. Some Disney bounders actually make it hard on purpose to guess what character they are with very subtle or abstract details---Disney, but make it fashion, and of course people succeed at that to varying degrees. The more heavily people lean into cosplay, the more I feel like they should be going to Comic Con, not the theme parks. There's a big difference between paying homage to the characters you love for your own amusement and dressing up to get attention from others. I worked as a character at Disneyland a long time ago and little kids often can't tell the difference. It's not cool to confuse families who are just trying to have a fun day in the parks, nor is it cool to be living out your cosplay kinks where there are kids around. That's what comic con and Halloween are for.

The majority of people who cosplay (or Disney bound, or dress up for ten fairs or anything else) aren’t dressing up to get peoples attention. They’re dressing up cause they love that character, love the challenge of making or putting together the outfits, enjoy matching with their friend/group, and it makes them happy to wear the finished costume. Meeting other fans of the character they’re dressed as might be a nice little bonus but it’s not why they do it

I anime-bound at cons. I have very weak crafting and sewing skills and even less money to buy an outfit...hence "bounding". LOVED Luke's commentary. Some people "bound" a little high, but nice to see happy people having a happy time. I would love to see more Disney Bounding or for that matter any IP-type bounding.

I just went to Disney World with my friend recently, and I’m glad we got to do Disney bound outfits. Being in a full cosplay would be so impractical for the long, hot days of waiting in line at Disney. I loved coming up with outfits that were comfy and light, but also gave away which character I’m “cosplaying”. Got tons of compliments too. I find accessorizing is your best friend for that!

Hey Luke! You’ve got an amazing knack for blending style with humor, it's just awesome. Not gonna lie, this Disney adult fashion video really had me. It reminds me of growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, when we actually got to be kids, dressing up and diving into those fantasy worlds. While I'm all for everyone expressing themselves and having fun in their own way, it does seem like adults nowadays are clinging to that childhood magic, maybe even a bit too much. Let the kids have their moment, right?

Loved the video. Safiya Nygaard did a really good overview of Disneybounding in how it got started and the process of making a Outfit/Cord to use Loilita Fashion term. would love a reaction of that video.
Doing a Deep Dive on Loungefly's I think could be very interesting as how the clothing choices for fandoms can infulence fashion and vice versa also the histroy, Who disigned the base template Loungefly and where did the idea of having the plaque bottom right come from? Also their are Loungefly collectors that have shelves not too disimaler to the Berkin bag Collections.
Lastly as a frequent user of a Loungefly. They are depictively spaceous bag. you can throw your keys, Wallet, Phone a small water bottle. and still have plenty space for a small lunch box. I would say it's the next size up from a bumbag/fannypack. big enough for a sandwich and a book/small diary planner but not for A4 notepads and Laptops.

As someone who used to Disneybound, it was a really creative way to add a little more fun to my visits to the park. Prior to the pandemic, I was an Annual Passport holder- it was the least expensive one, and I would use it 1-2 times per month, depending on the season. I did this for several years and it was really enjoyable. Coordinating with friends and dressing by theme is so much fun!
During the year, there were several unsanctioned and unofficial theme days that one could participate in by dressing up accordingly. Different themes included Rockabilly/Vintage Pinup, Ravers, Goths, Gothic Lolita and “Dapper Days”. Those days focused on visiting the park and wearing your “Sunday Best”. This is what Walt Disney envisioned when he originally conceived the idea of Disneyland.
I have zero idea if any of this still exists post pandemic. Not gonna lie, I miss those days. Disneyland is far too expensive these days and the whole reservation process is too much of a hassle. Ugh.
Great video! Thank you for your priceless reactions 💝

I think Disney bounding has gotten a lot more intense over the past few years. When I did it back in 2016, it was more so about wearing the color palette of the character styled as regular clothing rather than actually matching the look/style of the character. Kinda like the guy who just tried to wear Gaston’s colors lol. My friends and I went as character from Peter Pan, I was Captain Hook, and honestly, you probably wouldn’t have been able to tell cause we were so casual.
