Army Mountain Warfare School, operated by the Vermont National Guard brings an opportunity for soldiers to navigate rugged terrain and learn mountaineering techniques.
The curriculum is broken down into a two-week course, with three general type of mountain-specific skills taught in each: individual, small unit, and medical. The Basic Military Mountaineer Course is a prerequisite to attend the Advanced Military Mountaineer Course. The training focus is on providing the force structure with soldiers capable of assisting their units in mountainous environments. Courses for the Basic and Advanced Mountaineering Courses run monthly from May through October and January through March.
Don't mean to be that guy, but the Army Mountain Warfare School should be moved to Colorado along with the 10th Mountain Division. No hate to the Vermont guys, but 10th Mountain needs it more than a National Guard unit.
Just to be clear, the 10th Mountain is a light infantry division and is an active duty division. There is no mountain specialty mission for this unit other than some of their guys are mountain qualified. A few years back, the 86 IBCT (MTN) of the VT Army National Guard and other states was a round out Brigade for the 10th. That relationship has since dissipated.
Looks like they’re training the trainers. They said these guys would do sustainment training at their unit. So I assume the focus is on improving technical skills and they made a conscious decision to forgo uniforms to enhance learning. Or maybe it’s not that thought out and they just DGAF. 🤣

Basic should be mandatory for all fighting units of the 10th Mtn.
I enjoyed my time there, great instructor and AWESOME dining facility.
