I’ve worked with Madagascan hissing cockroaches before (at a zoo internship; I’m also a biology major), and while they can make decent pets, that’s only if you don’t have too many breeding females. Obviously she’s young so she probably doesn’t know this stuff, but she clearly let the breeding population get out of control, especially since she lets them roam freely around the house (Madagascan hissing cockroaches actually need to be in a small living area like a fish tank cus they hate light! They’re also excellent climbers, and their tendency to climb things means you need to have a very secure tank cover. In addition, many states require permits to own them, and usually only males are allowed to be kept as pets-so as to prevent pregnant females from accidentally being introduced into the environment) Like with any pet adoption, you should always do thorough research before getting one, even if they seem like easy animals to take care of!
Sorry you had to recieve such terrible bots on your comment when you've come out with such amazing input on hissing cockroaches that some may find useful for future reference.
@@scott1660 thanks I’m actually surprised someone other than a bot responded to this lol. It’s just that like although MHCs are relatively easy to take care of, that’s only if you have the proper background knowledge and experience. It’s honestly sad that she has so many, because although they’re listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, they’re literally only found in one place in the entire world: Madagascar. These MHCs should be in a proper breeding facility at a zoo or animal conservation center, not in a suburban home :(
They're so coool! 😫 I used to be deadly afraid of pretty much all bugs, but I work with animals so I've had my fair share of roach experience and hissies are so nice and chill
Shelby and her parents makes me appreciate my own parents even more. I'm autistic and I had several special interests as a child (like collecting insect wings and -legs or animal bones) that I now realize my parents tolerated because it made me happy.
I'll make it worse. So they also can't walk backwards, so if one gets in your ear, if it can't turn around, it'll start attempting to dig through you ear. Had this happen to me, it was hell. So freaking painful
I’m not going to lie. I almost choked laughing hard when that girl with the cockroaches explained with a straight face how that beetle got its name. I have no idea why it’s so funny to me. 😂
My mother is an entomologist and she used to bring the Madagascar hissing cockroaches home as well as scorpions and tarantulas. They are really calm and they really only hiss when they are bothered. She's actually taking good care of them and it's nice to see more people with that mindset.
Fun fact: her dubia roaches are common feeders for insect-eating lizards. They need warm temps (90~) to breed, (which is why you can't buy them in Florida and I think Hawaii bc they'll become invasive) so they won't infest your house if you live in cooler climates. And a colony as big as hers can go for $100s, so her love of roaches can also make her some bank ;)
Apparently these are Dubia cockroaches, the kind bred for feeding reptiles and amphibians. They don’t survive well outside of active care, are a bit shit at climbing and they don’t stink as bad as other insects like crickets. Many pet stores sell them for cheap and it is probably where she got these ones from. I think it’s wonderful she is pursuing this and she’ll probably become an entomologist when she’s older, especially if she begins collecting other specimens, I just think she should have a space for them that isn’t inside the house, maybe make a dedicated space for them in a heated shed separate from the house. Also she should probably cool it on breeding those things, she has way too many and they really shouldn’t be allowed to wander around outside of the containers.
Maybe not an entomologists. She could be a roach breeder, though. Make money doing what she wants to do anyway. Someone has to breed them for pet stores.
I mean yeah it’s good she has something she enjoys but to let them roam about in her room is where I would draw the line as parent like everyone has their own hobby but you don’t see people who keep spiders letting them roam free in their house
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with keeping them in her room if they stay in an aquarium and if she didn’t have so many. The parents have let her let it get out of control. No way she should have so many.
@PirateQueen dubia roaches specifically dont smell if you are caring for them properly. Like keeping them clean like you should or having cleaner crew insects like my isopods and springtails. I'd much rather some dubia in my room than a lot of the alternatives lol most are literally FOUL. Tried to breed mealworms for a bit which may lizard loved the things but found out I'm allergic. The beetles smell so bad lol they aren't even dirty per say just since they are a stink bug basically... the smell lol crickets are the one that makes me want to vomit though. Hated the smell of hornworms too.
the thing is, not only are hissing cockroaches clean and typically docile and odorless, that little girl is super knowledgeable abt them and clearly cares abt them
The thing is, if i find where she lives, I'm burning the whole thing place to the ground. Don't give a shit if it's an apartment on the 10th floor, the whole palace is going down in flames.
yeah fr, they get a bad rep but they aren't that bad! hissing cockroaches have lil mites on them that clean the bacteria and gross stuff off of them so they're actually a lot more sanitary to handle than a regular ol' sewer roach (which can fly, and carry diseases, and freak me tf out). i still wash my hands after handling them but I do that with just about any animal, even dogs and cats
I feel like as someone with diagnosed OCD these things have to be and extreme ocd situation. Like never have I ever thought of collecting cockroaches but I’m a huge collector and I get really obsessed with my collections sometimes. I’m actually working on it in therapy.
I think the cockroach collection thing is an ASD thing, I had many interests that were major like her’s when I was an undiagnosed kid. As far as the plastic eating, it sounds like Pica, which is an eating disorder. I have OCD and developed an eating disorder because of it, so it’s not unlikely that they come together, but it’s definitely Pica
Honestly super happy for Shelby having such loving, supportive parents. They literally hate the things but are like "they make her happy so" and honestly I can imagine millions of kids around the world wishing they had that.
I'm also pretty happy that Shelby has such a passion for specific types of insects. She does have knowledge regarding the types and unique functionalities of them. I do wish sometimes that we aren't _this_ afraid of cockroaches that are practically harmless. But she really does need to work on population control.
@@johnlime1469 she has too much. like at this point she's not caring for them cuz it's too much. also, cockroaches just disgust me. they look disgusting. I can't handle them. I can sorta get spiders and stuff, and even centipedes. but roaches??? no. also, because most roaches are from the wild so they are actually just nasty, doesn't help.
I'll be completely honest, when I first saw the thumbnail, I thought "oh, what the fuck, did she fill an egg carton with shit or something? That's disgusting." ...and then I watched part of the video, looked back at the thumbnail, and realized what I was _actually_ looking at. Sean: “I know there’s no Cockroaches in England” Oh no there is. There is Sean. They’re hardy bugs and can thrive on very little. A few species found in the UK are Oriental Cockroaches, German Cockroaches and Brown Banded Cockroaches. Had an unfortunate incident involving a delivery of dog food cans where one of them had been damaged in storage. It was covered in cockroach nymph shed and reeked of cockroach waste and rotten dog food. They’d been laid in the damaged can as there was a hole and the larvae/nymphs ate the dog food. Thankfully they must have moved on as there was no more food so it was just the shed, but it was still awful. But yes. There are cockroaches in England.
fun fact from work: if you have a reaction to chocolate, you will get tested for both chocolate and german cockroaches because it is more common to be allergic to the small particulates from roaches that drop into chocolate vats than it is for you to be allergic to chocolate itself.
I am aware there are cockroaches in England, but I have never actually seen them in hotels or whatever. The only kind I've seen in person are the giant ones they show at petting zoos, but I hope it stays that way.
ngl shoutout to the first girl, she has a level of fearlessness towards roaches i could never hope to achieve and even if her hobby is strange, it isn't hurting anyone and could lead to a great career as an entomologist.
When the little girl lifted up her covers and we saw all those roaches, I swear I felt something crawling on me and screamed. Nothing there, but took me a minute to finish the video. Thanks Jack.
The only thing I find cringy about the cockroach one is just if they're allowed yo roam throughout the house. They thrive best in their own special enclosures suited to their needs and there's a lot of different roaches that makes great pets! Them roaming freely is bad though is because their dead bodies ca attract destructive pests like rats or various scavanger beetles and obviously that isn't good. I just breed mine to feed to my reptiles and I doubt that's what she does with them, but it's a Greta excuse to have them in your home if you ever need one lol!
I think that's just for the creep factor 🤔 When filming these type of "reality TV" episodes, some directors will stage scenes and scenarios that do not actually represent the people's lives. They do this to boost entertainment value and to add more time to the episode. She seems very knowledgeable and cares greatly for her roaches, I doubt she'd let them just let them wander around like that (also her parents probably wouldn't allow them to either since both parents don't like them)
@@voxorox I was intrigued by your mention that they are born pregnant and wanted to know more! But I couldn't find anything on my brief Google search (I could only find life cycles and gestation periods) Do you know where I could find more information about this?
The thing with the plastic eating might be “Pica” Pica is an eating disorder in which a person eats things not usually considered food. Young kids often put non-food items (like grass or toys) in their mouths because they're curious about the world around them. But kids with pica (PIE-kuh) go beyond that. This is something that I suffer from and it’s really weird and just…but the part about the texture makes sense
I had pica as a kid. My parents were pretty much locking down everything and 24/7 watching, and I still managed to get in everywhere. A few things was Rat poison, burnt motor oil, a whole tube of icy hot, leather cleaner, shoe polish, toilet bowl cleaner, etc. I grew out of it at age like 4 but I really hope she stays healthy
I had a friend once who kept hissing cockroaches as pets. I slept over at his house once, and he mentioned that some of the babies had escaped the tank a while ago and that there were a few hissing roaches running around the house. Barely slept that night
I WISH I had that girl’s fearlessness. Maybe then I wouldn’t waste 3 hours of my life screaming at a cockroach on the wall and another 30minutes actually trying to get rid of it.
TBF a house roach and a hissing cockroach are completely different, one of them flies and carries all sorts of diseases and the other one is pretty chill and only makes a little hissy sound when it's afraid. this girl is so cool for what she's doing and i love hissing cockroaches but i still scream when i see a sewer roach in the house LMAO, they are NOT fun to deal with.
Sean: "Nothin but love. Hands up to the screen." Smile Me: "Aight, sure." Sean: "Feel that energy? Feel that heat? It's like cockroach heat between us." Dammit, got me at the end. I had made it through until that line 😖

This episode sent Sean into such a deep fight or flight fear response that he regressed all the way to making fun of a child for not speaking like an adult yet. That’s a man in a vulnerable state if I’ve ever seen one 😂
Those plastic cocktail swords are dangerous. There was a food critic who died of internal bleeding because he bit-off a piece of one while he was berating a restaurant owner during a menu tasting.
Yeah I'm really puzzled how she's still alive like I get that she likes the mouth feel but how does she not have completely fucked up insides from the sharpness of the plastic bits.
At the start when they were showing a couple cockroaches on the ground I'm like "okay, that's gross" and then when she lifts her bed sheets....If I was her parent, I would be burning the house down.
That first kid definitely gonna take place in some lab accident and turn into a half human half cockroach supervillain telephatically using cockroaches.
This is what happens when parents don’t parent and let their kids do whatever they want. There’s nothing wrong with her keeping a few Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Plenty of people keep them as pets. But she’s let them multiple completely out of control and the parents need to step in and put a stop to it before it gets even worse. Sell some to pet stores or something and keep only males. Parents, it’s ok to tell your kids no!
yeah, like any kind of pet it's possible to have too many and having too many pets is bad for both the animals and the owner. she's basically got the same thing going on with her cockroaches as cat hoarders and the like, and it'd be best for both the roaches and the humans if the number of roaches she looked after went down significantly
Agreed! Having pet cockroaches is honestly really cool! I would personally be too nervous about escapees to keep them myself. But this seems like a bit of a hoarding situation by a child, and I think her parents ought to rein her in a bit. Maybe a dozen in a proper enclosure.
I mean, maybe they're selling the roaches as feeders, and it's all just been sensationalized for the viewers. They could make a pretty sizeable income by selling feeder roaches with that breeding population, especially if there's a lot of reptile/amphibian keepers around.
It's also ok to encourage your child's passions. She might grow up to be the world's best entomologist. Solve the garbage crisis. Roaches are "carriers" of disease, but if not exposed to the problem (as pet roaches aren't) they won't spread them. Good hygiene is all she needs to be safe. She already has it under control, though.
I’ve seen that full episode of My Strange Addiction. One of the things they always do is film them having a consultation with a doctor. The doctor palpated her abdomen and said she could feel her enlarged liver, and that she would need to be placed on the liver transplant waiting list immediately. While some of the people featured in the show seem like they might be faking or at least exaggerating their “addictions,” this poor lady was clearly absolutely devastated. She had admitted early on during the doctor’s consultation that she’d never really considered what was in all the plastic she was eating and the effects it could have on her body. It’s honestly the most heart-breaking episode I’ve seen.
Here's the thing, I read a story once from a doctor about a woman whose home was so infested with roaches, they literally started eating her. Like no kidding, the doctor who wrote this story said she came in complaining about chest pains, and during the examination, he had her lift up her breasts, and underneath there were literally roaches eating their way into her chest. So, true or not, no, I will never be comfortable with roaches. I see even one and I'm putting roach poison all around my house, because you see one, it's a guarantee there's more.
I saw this on reddit, this was originally posted there I believe, along with all those nasty stories like the one with the hazardous vaginal discharge, like the worst ever infection there is.
How does the woman not know there are roaches on her chest? Even if she SOMEHOW mistook the bites she felt as something else, she dressed herself. How does she not see them?? I realize you're not the original poster of the story so I shouldn't be asking you, but those are the questions that immediately came to mind
I think Shelby rocks. How cool that she understands there's nothing to be afraid of, whereas most of us would run away screaming. I hope she doesn't get hurt or bullied in any way due to this video.
Honestly tho! I mean I keep inverts too so I'm biased but it's great to see kids fearlessly curious of creatures people so commonly regard with undeserved fear or disgust. Just uh... probably don't let them free roam your room like that, lol

My mom is chronically addicted to TLC, and when I showed her the cockroach girl, she screeched and kept repeating it wasn't real until I reminded her the content of the channel. I got a big kick out of it, so thank you.
As someone who absolutely *despises* bugs and gets uncomfortable whenever I see or hear about one, that first video with the girl collecting roaches would be my worst nightmare. Like said in the video: "I can feel them crawling all over me."
Jack: "I'm not afraid they're gonna pull out a knife and stab me." Family Guy Cockroaches: "Man, I'm gonna cut you up so bad, you gonna wish, I no cut you up so bad."
Ok but as a Neurodivergent person who has an oral-stim (chewing on things SAFELY, because of the texture), hearing Jack talk about kinda getting it at 13:11 made me feel really assured that i'm not alone. idk I just didn't notice anyone else talking about it and thought it was really nice. :)
@@bigboom2438 it's not something I do often. It's actually kind of rare for me to just chew on something that's not food. My only real addition is caffeine
Ok, I didn't expect her to have so many of the cockroaches, much less inside her bed.... She would be a really good candidate for a PhD student in biomimetics. UC Berkeley has a millipede lab where they actively study cockroaches' behaviors and make tiny robots out of them, because cockroaches are so resilient and can adapt to so many environments. I used to collect rhinoceros beetles when I was a kid, because they're pretty fecking rad. I've never found any stag beetles, which have 2 horns and much rarer to find from experience. So yea, I guess I can see where the girl is coming from. But I were in her position, I would probably try to contain, like, only a few in transparent plastic cages, since it's going to be really easy to run out of resources for them, you can only manage the lives of so many creatures at once, and you might lose count of them, leading to you ending up finding them in the middle of nowhere within the house.
I know right! Like, props to the parents for being supportive but SET SOME BOUNDARIES, SET A LIMIT. Like not only would that be disgusting but also a health hazard! Cockroaches are known for carrying bacteria, and a LOT of them, and judging by how freely and how many there are, there are definitely ones going into the kitchen, into the drawers, the cupboards, the plates. And she said it herself how they stink! WTFF
@@TitaniumTronic To be fair, ones bred in captivity shouldn't be carrying anything harmful, because they haven't had access to it. But I'm no expert, so
I don’t think a child should be allowed to take care of this many. Might make her happy but the way she was picking up those baby roaches makes me think she sees them more as toys than animals.
Yeah, that's one of my concerns. Because as much as they freak me out, I don't think anyone who takes good care of them (or really any pet like them) would just let them roam the house like that unsupervised (I know it was for the introduction but you can't expect a child to be able to make sure that that many will be safe when they're all out) or even hold so many at once. Like I hate them, I'd probably faint if any ever crawled on me, but they're still living things that are meant to be taken care of, and they shouldn't be in a place where they could be subject to unnecessary mistreatment. Someone really ought to regulate how much she has, she doesn't need crates upon crates of pregnant roaches to look after in a suburban home. Maybe bring a few to a zoo and let her visit them but don't let her keep track of them all by herself.
I personally hate cockroaches and my reaction to the cockroach girl was very similar to Sean’s. But, I think that it’s cool that she’s so passionate about cockroaches HOWEVER, she shouldn’t let them out of the containers like that. There is simply too many to keep track of when they’re outside the containers and a few rogue ones could very easily hide in corners of the house. Maybe the beginning segment was done by the TV producers for shock factor, but I have a hard time believing that none have ever escaped. I would NOT be okay with her letting the cockroaches roam free if I lived there.
I'll be completely honest, when I first saw the thumbnail, I thought "oh, what the fuck, did she fill an egg carton with shit or something? Fun fact! Liking to chew on certain textures is called stimming, which is common among people with ADHD or Autism! Just like bad textures can set us off (I personally hate the feeling writing with marker and pencil on paper), good textures make us happy! My husband has ADHD as well and he likes *the cronch*. He still snacks on raw pasta once in a while for the crunchy texture (though not often because it's not good for your tummy to eat a lot of raw pasta). It seems the woman in the video eating plastic has pica, though! Which is a whole separate disorder!
I've snacked on ramen growing up, if that's a better alternative for your husband ? They're precooked before they're packaged so they're technically not raw lol
Yeessss! Glad someone else here gets it lmao I left another comment talking about how my doctor said I had pica when I was a kid because I was always chewing on stuff but now that I’ve been diagnosed with adhd as an adult I realize it was just oral stimming the whole time 😭 pica is the desire to actually eat things that aren’t food, while oral stimming is really just chewing on things for the sensation. There are even adult oral stim toys you can get, some even look like jewellery so it doesn’t stand out. Seemed like jack was a little worried about kind of getting what the girl was talking about lol so it’d be nice for him to know it’s actually not that weird. My favourite things to chew on are straws, plastic clothing tags and the rings that come around plastic bottlenecks. But I never eat them! The only downside is that I found out over exerting your jaw can cause headaches and make you start grinding your teeth at night, which are also problems I’ve started having 🥲 but god the urge to stim is just too strong
Listen, it's kinda wholesome that the girl's parents--while clearly not on board with the cockroaches--still support her and don't shame her for having strange interests. That being said, I cannot believe they've allowed her to have an entire bin of roaches in their house lol. I would have told her she can have like one at the time, and if that's not possible or they reproduce too quickly, we're going to have to just get rid of them. So that there's not, you know, an entire bin of roaches in my house.

In addition, many states require permits to own them, and usually only males are allowed to be kept as pets-so as to prevent pregnant females from accidentally being introduced into the environment) Like with any pet adoption, you should always do thorough research before getting one, even if they seem like easy animals to take care of!

fun fact is she's probably referring to dermestid beetles, and those are actually used in taxidermy practice, for cleaning bones.
My mother is an entomologist and she used to bring the Madagascar hissing cockroaches home as well as scorpions and tarantulas. They are really calm and they really only hiss when they are bothered. She's actually taking good care of them and it's nice to see more people with that mindset.
It’s also okay to be weirded out or afraid. Just respect the animals and the people who love them.

@@lemonyfish3303 They can if you keep too many in a small space and don't clean. They do eat rotting things so usually it's their food that smells.

Oh absolutely, it’s just not sanitary.
Oh no there is.

See your a normal person with cockroaches
I think that's just for the creep factor 🤔
When filming these type of "reality TV" episodes, some directors will stage scenes and scenarios that do not actually represent the people's lives. They do this to boost entertainment value and to add more time to the episode.
Maybe they sold it, but the TV show brought alot of cockroaches to her to make the show more interesting
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
God now my chest hurts xD
Ooooh do you remember what the story is called?
I saw this on reddit, this was originally posted there I believe, along with all those nasty stories like the one with the hazardous vaginal discharge, like the worst ever infection there is.
How does the woman not know there are roaches on her chest? Even if she SOMEHOW mistook the bites she felt as something else, she dressed herself. How does she not see them??
I realize you're not the original poster of the story so I shouldn't be asking you, but those are the questions that immediately came to mind
Even if they were completely obscured by her breasts, I can't believe she wouldn't have checked long before making a doctor appointment
I think Shelby rocks. How cool that she understands there's nothing to be afraid of, whereas most of us would run away screaming. I hope she doesn't get hurt or bullied in any way due to this video.

But I were in her position, I would probably try to contain, like, only a few in transparent plastic cages, since it's going to be really easy to run out of resources for them, you can only manage the lives of so many creatures at once, and you might lose count of them, leading to you ending up finding them in the middle of nowhere within the house.
I had a stag beetle I caught in my Georgia home up in a bag by the fridge for a long time cuz it looked like a tiny alien.

5:06 He corrects the kid on "abdomen" but then "wrecked" is spelt wrong soon after 😭
I personally hate cockroaches and my reaction to the cockroach girl was very similar to Sean’s. But, I think that it’s cool that she’s so passionate about cockroaches
HOWEVER, she shouldn’t let them out of the containers like that.

@@Nichichan Wow, I honestly have never thought of that before! Definitely gonna go tell him that haha, thank you ♥
Yeessss! Glad someone else here gets it lmao
I left another comment talking about how my doctor said I had pica when I was a kid because I was always chewing on stuff but now that I’ve been diagnosed with adhd as an adult I realize it was just oral stimming the whole time 😭 pica is the desire to actually eat things that aren’t food, while oral stimming is really just chewing on things for the sensation.
The only downside is that I found out over exerting your jaw can cause headaches and make you start grinding your teeth at night, which are also problems I’ve started having 🥲 but god the urge to stim is just too strong
today i realised that i dont have any chewing/texure stims. as a child i used to chew my shirt though.
The amount of straws and other things with The Cronch that I've had confiscated from me is both hilarious and slightly worrying 😅
I agree lol. Maybe up to ten adults and 5 young is ok... a few hundreds? Yeah we gonna cull some.
Fr, the damn nightmare I'd have is that whole entire bin of roaches being nocked over by mistake, and they scurry away into the seems of the house.
Yeah, that population is waaaay outta control. They need some help taming that crowd, maybe they could sell a bunch to pet stores

but tbh, she could probably make a business out of it, there are people who own insectivore (creatures that eat insects) pets (Geckos, some snakes, spiders etc.) that would buy cockroaches in order to feed their pets

You sure it wasn't just someone that pooped at the bottom of the stairwell?

Hissing cockroaches are actually great pets! I should know, I have 28 of them.
They are harmless besides their spiky legs and super docile and easy to care for! Fun fact: if one gets loose it physically cannot infest your house

Roaches are amazing animals and no different than the millions of people keeping any other organism in the world.
Why does it need to be a mutated unhealthy inbred fuzzy thing to be a pet.
I generally deal with bugs quite well but I do feel bad for people who have a phobia of insects or bugs
I do have to say, even though the kid is mispronouncing a lot of the words, she clearly knows A LOT about cockroaches and it's really impressive to see.
Fun fact sean. dubia and hissing cockroaches which is what she owns actually have an antibacterial resin on them that prevents bacterial disease spread. I also used to have both as pets and theyre actually amazing pets!

Bump into a wall? hiss
