  • The ice on the sea is strong enough at this time of the year so it's possible to cycle on. Also there happens to be pretty nice ice roads, so let's go ride on ice!

    One thing I can't really understand is why those ice roads on the sea are not straight... The frozen sea is supposed to be flat, right? So why do they appear snake shaped, even though the turns look very wide? 🤔

    What is the 'Pucker Factor' on this Ride? Getting in and out on the ice would have been 'comedy gold'. Did something like this on a converted Recumbent Trike 12 years ago... replaced the front wheels with repurposed Speed Skates, the rear tire with a studded tire and a make shift pull bar brake. took it on a frozen creek that fed into a small lake... had two bridges to go under and the ice was slightly melting and wet... Pucker Factor 8.

      I also have a Trikke T12. This is crazy. It's not intended for slippery surfaces originally. But with proper technique and with good road surface you can ride even under rain. I've tried this.
      Also, it the front wheel which grabs the road. So I not sure if there any point in installing studded rear tires.

    This is very slippery XD. Cycling on ice whet else. This must be really funny to do, and see other people's reaction.

    I've been enjoying cycling on sea ice in Oulu with my MTB. I guess you don't have spikes on your tires. It is nice to regocnise familiar scenery around Kokkola and Kälviä on your videos. I'm originally from Veteli, and because of that I have the tradition to cycle annually the Oulu-Kokkola-Oulu route during the summer/autumn.

    Who needs to 'turn' around? Just lock one wheel and hope you don't roll over instead... Oh... right... you wanted to make a 'controlled' turn... on ice... in winter... without 'traction enhancements'...
    Heh-heh, good joke!

    I got to thinking: yes, they're "too niche" for creating a market, but have you given any thought to building a child's sized velomobile for your kids yet?🤔 Never too late to start them early, and it would be a much watched side project for your channel, now that you have the resources and networking from it, to create such a velomobile.🤷‍♂️

    Hey Saukki
    Wondering if this is good value, as I'm new to velomobiles.
    I found a 2010 Quest for sale for €3000, 80 km from me. If it's still there, as it has been listed since December '22.
    No racing hood, and no mention of pedal assist
    76.000 km
    Needs paint, but otherwise seems in good condition. No mention of cracks or other damage.
    According to the owner it got new tires, brakes AND rims about 1.000 km ago.
    So it seems like it's technically good too.

      @TheVelomobileChannel  Год назад +1

      I would say go for it. Quest is allways a good choise. Especially for your first velomobile.

      @@TheVelomobileChannel I've been checking a bit further, to see if there also is a shop near me that I can go to for the bigger service items, untill I feel confident enough to do those myself, or where I can order parts from.
      Found a place about 12 km from home. After checking if they're still in business (as the site doesn't seem recent or active), I learned that they serve as a dealer for Alpha 7, Buelk and Quest.
      That's interesting. It means if prices of Quest are not too crazy, I might go after a brand new one instead. Unless they have a used one for sale.
      If I can I might go with orange, as I know there already is a red one, a yellow one and a grey one in my area. The yellow one might even belong to someone in my town. I've seen it close to my house a few times, and my father says he's seen it in our street.

    Hello Saukki
    I discovered your channel only recently. Love your content. There are a few things I would like to ask:
    -I haven't seen all your video's, so don't know if you made a video on this already. So I would like to ask how well you can see out of a velomobile around you, also taking into consideration the steep access ramps you often find to get on and off dike paths. Can you see over the front easy?
    -What is it like to manouver, getting in and out of parking spots? And how do you secure a velomobile when parking? It seems like everyone can just jump in it and ride of.
    -I would also like to ask how heavy the Quattrovelo is.
    Reason I'm asking about the Quattrovelo's weight is because that's the one I would be most interested in. As if I decide to get a velomobile, the big and easily accessible luggage area of the Quattrovelo, and the fact that a velomobile can travel where cars are not allowed, could be a good motivation to sell my "car".
    I have wanted to buy a velomobile in the past, but put if of for a few reasons:
    -Price: even used ones can still cost as much as a good condition used or base model car.
    -There were none close enough to me to go pick up, and there is also no dealer near me where I can test one. There are two or three bicycle shops in or near my village. None of them does velomobiles.
    Yet your video's made me consider it again. Because I'm visually impaired I only have a European AM-category driving licence, good for 45 km/h limited mopeds and light quadricycles, the French "Vehicule Sans Permis". I have one of those, but have had a few unpleasant encounters with inpatient drivers who don't understand or disagree with the fact that these vehicles are also allowed to travel on 70-90 km/h roads. Some go so far as to keep tailgating me while there is a passing lane dedicated to the same direction of travel available for miles. Or blocking me when I'm trying to get to a left turn lane. It's not that they don't know it. They just do it on purpose.

      @TheVelomobileChannel  Год назад

      There are few blind spots around a velomobile. But with 2 rear view mirrors, it's not too bad. You can't see the ground directly on front of the velomobile. That's not an issue if you are riding on a road. But when manovering in cities and on parking spots it might sometimes be a problem. Also the turning radius of a velomobile is quite large. That's just something you need to learn to live with.
      There's no easy way to lock the access inside the velomobile. You can close the manhole with a manhole cover, so that people can't see inside and it might stop them climbing in. But you should not leave any valuable stuff inside. Yo can easily lock the velomobile with a chain lock through one of the wheels. For example Quatrevelo needs a workshop and tools to remove any of the wheels, so no one is going to remove the wheel on a street and steal the velomobile.

      @The Velomobile Channel Thanks for the info.
      I saw your Alleweder A4 test as well now. I realise that was a while ago.
      That might be a good choice too, if they can still be found. Sad that the windscreen isn't standard. I loved that. Your friend got it right.
      Looks like the seating position in that one is a bit better to see out, and the rear seems to be built more above the wheel than around it.
      And you already mentioned the better turning radius of that one.
      It also seemed to have at least good ground clearance for gravel roads. That one might get a bit further, if the traction holds up.
      The shell reminds me somewhat of a w
      World War 2 fighter plane. So it would be fun to paint that up as one, maybe even create a tribute to a famous pilot.
      And than if the police stop you and ask why you are speeding, go:
      "Speeding?! What do you mean, officer? You just interrupted my take-off." 🤣

    What velomobile do you recommend for touring in hilly areas. Can you climb 10% hils with a quatrovello or a quest?

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  Год назад

      Yes you can. Just make sure you have small enough gears. For Quatrevelo get the Mountain Drive.
      Quest might not feel as good when climbing, because it doesn’t have stiff enough drivetrain. Newer models have better drivetrain for climbing. Something like Alpha7 might be better for climbing than Quest. It’s lighter and it has stiff drivetrain.

      I used to have a Mango Sport and found it nice for climbing but I did have a middrive in it and so it had a very large gear range.
