Voodoo PC had 3 technicians who were in charge of cable management. They folded ribbon cables into origami art and hid every wire with zip ties and double sided tape. Made Alienware child's play.

I remember folding and slitting the ide cables and then the round ones came out. I also remember cutting a window in the side of the pc and taping glass to the inside of it to create a window. Painting the case different colors and wishing companies would do the same.. this was the early 90s for me. I even cut windows on the sides of desktop 386s machines for a cool side view.

I’m from New York, I remember back in the day playing with voodoo pc’s, falcon northwest computers, in J&R music world and compusa stores, they were so cool, they looked like luxury sports cars especially voodoo pc’s with there glossy paint jobs. It always cool play with high performance hardware playing games like interplay’s sacrifice or giants kabuto. You knew you was playing with quality. (Sigh) Good o days 🙂

Man, I recall my first real computer as a kid coming from Voodoo Calgary in around the year 2000 or 1999. They had an office made from a house in a totally weird barren part of town (if memory serves).
It was a beautiful machine with a bespoke case, and even though it was probably entry level, it had a real solidity to it.
Fapped to that thing for years. Thanks Voodoo.

That Maximum PC Asus Thunderbird board reminded me of my old ABIT KT7A-RAID with the 133MHZ front side bus, those were fun times ugly hardware and all. The Socket A boards were so legendary, processors were evolving by leaps and bounds then incl 64-bit computing and multi-core soon after.

I believe I had the MSI KT266A PRO with a K6-2 CPU, a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, and a Voodoo 3. From there, I upgraded to a Duron 800 on an ECS K7S5A, and after that, an ABIT NF7-S with a mobile Athlon 2600 overclocked to 3200. Good times back then. Lot of memories. Lots of busted RAID arrays. Lots of fun! 😊

Well, Alienware isn't what it was for those who were there in 90s, but it was built into a global brand that is still largely synonymous with PC gaming in mainstream eyes. You can hate on that all you want, but the brand value--which is how it's looked at that size and scale--is actually very big still. With the Voodoo PC buyout, it certainly wasn't a success compared to Alienware I'm sure you'd agree--especially initially. I do think the global situation did play a large role in that though.

I love it when the show has on guests who talk about older hardware. I'm just going to touch on a few things. First, AI self Driving. I'd guess that a company will nail it within 10 years. I don't think we are 1-3 years away. If we were 97% of the way there, sure. But 83% of the way like he said? Nah, it'll take more than 3 years to get that last 16.99%. They are better than regular people in huge rain/wind storms already though. They are *WORSE,* and by a good margin, at driving in the snow. Oh my gosh are they terrible. Like someone from Arizona in a rear wheel dive 83 Trans Am in a New England Blizzard terrible.
    New form Factors:
My gosh, just do it. People will buy new cases as long as their are affordable ones. I am so, so tired of the ATX form factor, and as cool as ITX can be, it just isn't appealing enough for me to spend an extra 10 hours squeezing everything into a case that takes up 10% less real estate on my desk than a mini ATX. Whatever form factor they come up with, it would be great to have full access to the mother board. The way chassis are built (currently), making any type of cable re-routing, or even plugging something in somewhere else, well frankly, it is a pain in the ass, even with a decent size mATX, and quite often regular ATX as well simply bc so much is squeezed right against the metal and the sides are 6"+ bloody high. Yes, I know we can use cases that are far less deep, but if you want a decent GPU (say 3070/6700 or better) then you kinda need that depth. If you want to use air cooling, which a *LOT* of people prefer, and not just for the cost, then you definitely need that height. The option? Allow an easy slide off when the case is laying down.
Now what form factor would I like to see? Lol, that I'm not quite sure about, but I have to believe that ATX isn't the most optimized way to use space with our current hardware as it has barely changed since I started building Windows PC's way back when we still had to manually FDISK ou hard drives and _"Red, white, green black"_ led to a lot of people plugging in their USB ports incorrectly (lol, 4 wires per USB port was a bit of a pain too ;^). Car chassis certainly aren't the same as they were in the 1930's. House frames are definitely not the same as they were back in Roman times, though not much has changed save a downgrade in quality since the 1800's...Still, I find it hard to believe we have reached that point with PC's. It would be cool to have a reason to use Watercooling besides _"I want to use a tiny case that looks just like any other mATX case I could build except 30% smaller"_ though. I did love those cube PC's and "Trash Can" models though. Of course you essentially need a 3 piece board for the trash can to work. Or you could have hinges, which I would certainly be fine with, and would allow for a ton of different style configurations. Darn, a foldout motherboard would be cool as heck. That's it Gordon, make it happen! Willis and Adam, call your contacts at EVGA and get this done. We're all counting on you now.
Seriously though, people that wanted an ATX case could just lay the board flat. People that wanted an ITX build could flip a couple of hinges and their good to go. small mATX, maybe 1 hinge and they're set. I like it. Just hit me up and I'll send you the info on where to send the royalty checks. You're welcome.
