This Is The BEST Budget ECU For Your Honda (Cheaper than S300)

- The Hondata S300 has been the go-to budget ECU for a long time for Honda racers. Haltech has released the Elite 550 ECU, a great budget ecu for the entry level racer. Eliminate the woes of a 90s ecu and upgrade to a modern setup. This ECU includes boost control, coil on plug support, flex fuel, CAN functionality, self learning O2 feedback control all for a lower pricepoint than an S300.
ECU Available Here! shop.humbleper...
With every purchase of this ecu, we will include a pinout for your car and a basemap to get it started using the pinout.
In the next video, I'll walk you through wiring your own custom jumper.
I hope this is a HUGE eye opener for all these “on a budget” Honda builders. Your paying WAY to much for a 26+ year old ecu that is in used condition and can fail on you at any given time and has horrible safety features. Spending a few more extra hundred dollars on a UP TO DATE standalone will be a way better purchase that’ll have more features, have a faster data-logger/safety perimeters, and can be used on on multiple projects that aren’t just Honda’s.
Too bad it's total bs and an advert.
@@nobodynoone2500 what ecu/ standalone are you running on your build?
What part of saying a modern stand-alone is better than a modified computer from 1992 is bs?
@@humbleperformance I think nobody no one is referring to the cost of a standalone vs the cost of a obd1 ecu with hondata being bs.
We are one of the biggest Hondata dealers in the country. Nothing to gain undercutting ourselves in this regard. Anyone who claims it’s BS is just ignorant.
Bullshit. Its not the same price. Once everything else you need is factored in, the haltech is at least $1200. The hondata is basically plug and play at ~$800.
Thats quite a big difference on a car youre trying to build _on a budget._
Im sure the haltech is superior. But lots of things are superior and we dont buy them becuse they dont fit our budget. Id love a set of $5000 ohlins coilovers. But that isnt in my budget. Hell, id take a set of teins. But that isnt either. So i compromise with a quality set of lowering springs and shocks. Because that is the budget.
And dont say that people should just budget more or bot do it. I could make the same argument against the 550. You shouldnt get that becuse it isnt at good as the 1500. _"If you can't nafford to do it right, dont do it at all."_ bullshit. Yeah, whatever.
When I was looking at trying a turbo honda build, this was what I was going to use since hondata units offered no support for tuning with an automatic on my platform ('04 1.7 civic). I'm glad to see I was pointed in the right direction with my homework since I've never attempted a build, but have wanted to for ages. And before someone roasts me for a slushbox, I have a t-6 spinalcord injury so I literally can't use a clutch 🤷♂️
Can we get a comparison between this and an entry level fueltech?
nah
SPEEDUNIO BOYS $200 for a standalone
Cherr hoo
Would love to see setting up a base map for start up and or how you would add fuel and change injector size, dont theese halttech ecu pretty much tune there self once base lined?😀 on the Next vid mabye🤙
No.
Hahahahahaha
I’m starting my build and I couldn’t be happier that I found your channel!
Glad I got my S300 done years ago, these prices are insane. You would think in the era of cheap electronics like RaspberryPi someone could come up with a super cheap chip.

So i was going for a p06 or p27 box from my stock box. So haltech 550 is the way to go? Hopefully its available here in the philippines. Im just going for a daily race car build.
Definitely a great option, Haltech makes a jumper harness for B/K series i believe.
not yet they do for elite 1500 and 1000 boomslang does make one tho
For those needing more inputs and outputs, the next model up, the elite 750 is the way to go. It has more inputs and can reassign unused injection and ignition channels as general outputs. I run Haltech’s in both my cars and love em
K swaps need a cheaper ecu option badly.if someone comes out eith a reasonable new ecu theyd make bank.. Paying $1000 us for a kpro which is old as hell is highway robbery ..
We are payin hondata ps5 money and they are giving us nes ....

This is good info to have. I'm going to be swapping in a B20V (GSR head type R cams) into my EF hatch. It came with a Rywire engine harness but i don't have an ecu yet. Looking forward to watching the rest of these videos on this ecu.
Thanks for the input I'm currently building a k24 bb2 from 1993 this will help so much looking forward to the next few videos
Would this work for something like a rsx type s with the k20a2 or a kseries in general?

I luckily found a p28 and chipped it myself. Upgrading to a link monsoon soon though
I got a p28 with s300 for $400
$850 for one of the s300s installed by you guys, but a Haltech is $1084 with an universal unfinished harness...eh im not sure this is worth it for most budget guys. Thats a lot of work and issues to sort through versus a hondata. Especially when theres other much cheaper tuning for the obd1 stuff
$847 for ecu with pins we’ll show you how to wire your own harness for less than $50
We know what happens when they give us a non plug and play system, not everyone is willing to do wiring work, plug and play is the way to go in my opinion, save you time and stress from everything else you have to deal with a build. That’s just my opinion based in facts that I seen over the years.
@@theimportschannel86 La Lenta said "Don't be scared, Mijo"
I think when you learn how simple it actually is you’ll be less intimidated.
Then you gotta think about the tuners... Every Honda tuner is hella familiar with s300 whereas haltech might still be unchartered territory to some of these guys
Wouldn't a megasquirt ot speeduino be more of a budget option?
Speeduino is garbage. MS3Pro is more expensive than 850$
Ms2 v3.0 board.
I'm not the first person to have the idea to use a gen 3 LS ECU on a 4 cylinder. Millions of those ECUs out there going for $60 on ebay, plenty of cheap harnesses, MAP sensors all send the same shit (some are powered by 5 volts instead of 12). Does coil on plug, just use the LS coils. Make or buy a trigger wheel for the crank sensor, mount it to crank pulley, then mount the crank sensor; everything else is easy. And there's custom firmware for boost control and wideband O2. AAAND, the software to tune them is free, Universal Patcher; $50 OBDLink SX works with that (VATS/VTD delete is first thing to do). You disable misfire and circuit open error reporting for the 4 unused cylinders. You can choose MAF or speed density only. My video from 12 days ago shows an example of a crank sensor adapter, and I show the sensor working with the ECU at the end. Sensor is from a 4.3 Ecotec. Make a video for that if you're really not a shill.
Will this work to get a few desperately needed horses out of a D17a2 in a 05 Civic ??
I have a question does the p28 work with a b20 non vtec until im ready to start my build??? I am new to this thanks
Another budget is a Moates ostrich, cobra, etc. and HTS (Honda Tuning Suite) which is free software prolly get a board for 200-250 then whatever your using for ecu
I got a chipped p28 for 150$ lmk
Microsquirt is perfect for B series and its cheaper and has 2x analog inputs, even the MS3 Pro evo which has massive amounts of IO is about the same price as the 550... as for losing IO on coil on plug setups, what you can do is configure the coils to run in wasted spark mode instead of sequential, so you only use two outputs instead of all four, this is fine for 95% of setups, as is running batch injection ( all 4 injectors on one output) as long as your injector resistance does not draw more than 8A (if so use resistors) so you pick up 3 more outputs that way.... but I totally agree the s300 is a POS by todays standards, the old Honda ECUs are not worth anything more than a good Chrome chip.
I paid 160 for a SPEEDOUINO and another 185 for blue tooth and wideband controller and it has everything the haltech has no lift shift, 2 step ,rolling 2 step ,ac control and all and is easy as hell to set up and tune
Haltech has 2 step, 3 step, and traction control, as well as rolling 2 step, ac control with custom parameters, speeduino does not have boost by gear, speed, 3 step, traction control, and a whole slew of things.
Speeduinos are great! Got one in my truck.
@@humbleperformance Yes it does, you are confused or lying.
speeduino is good but it's still very home-brew tech nerdy. The haltech works out of the box and the interface is very intuitive. It comes down to your application and your familiarity with tuning.
U said if we buy from u we get a free base tune i just called and u told me it would be $250 i bought the ecu from u a month ago
Well ok then
Dude please slow down when you talk. Just a little. Please you are giving me anxiety. And i really want to watch your videos. On a side note i bought a moates demon2 ($499) and a junkyard p28 for $100 from a friend of mine. After spending 30 dollars on a chip kit. To put in a base map. (Before the demon) had i known i could get a haltech for an obd1 honda i would have spent the exta Grand and got the 1500 made for obd1 hondas. Wish i would have seen this sooner.
Now that the elite series can be controlled with the NSP software, tuning will be quicker and easier! #HaltechSentMe
Hey is there an updated version of the website for 1999 D series honda civics ecu?
It sucks that haltech discontinued the 550 was gonna use this now my only option is fueltech. So dissapointed.
Edit: they are back
Nobody has used s300 for a long time. It was never the 'budget' option.
You can buy a whole kit for under 300 if you already have the obd1 ecu.
This is unquestionably an advert.
I use it, I suspect most obd1 hondas and integras are using it, but the more serious guys are probably getting nicer things like haltechs.
Man this guy sounds and looks like Nolan (Ughh the black version of the white dude)from Donut media 😀
To be clear and accurate on this. Materials used and technology on hardware has not changed since the early 90s. What has changed in regards to hardware is the methods , processes and tooling used for manufacturing computer components, and the eradication of premature failing and or partial malfunction of components, through the substitution of certain materials with others on these. Through these changes ecu board and components have become less prone to failure, minimization of signal leak, of reduction of component properties and loss of interaction between them while at the same time, interaction speed has been enhanced. So in other words the technological basis of ecu board design and manufacture is the same, but it has been refined and corrected at good degree. So if one takes a late 90s early '00 ecu and replaces the right components, such as capacitors, diodes, chipsets, mosfet, resistors, transistors inj and ign drivers, relays, e-prom etc , with contemporary versions of them, then one will have built a new and pretty capable ecu unit, as far as hardware is concerned, where in combination with modern coding reader/writer such as the hondata, one will get the job done on their setup. To sum this up, it is not hardware technology that has changed, as this has only been refined and corrected, as capacitor is still a capacitor, and a diode is still a diode, so is an injector driver i.e, with the difference that nowadays these components are much more compact, and more resilient than two decades back. What has actually changed is the coding, as it has advanced greatly since the 90s, and it has also been spread around. Through the evolution of coding, we can demand more features from the hardware components, and coding has also become a lot easier with todays coding tools than it used to be the previous decades. In the '90s almost all the features if not all that are offered today to the end user, who could be anyone of us, through a standalone ECU unit, were only available to rally teams, or to anyone who wanted to have a very high end standalone product that had 3-4 times the value of a piggy back ecu i.e. One of these companies was Motec. A group N standalone ecu from Motec in 1998 with all its ancillaries, had a cost of around 4K usd, but the specific ECU offered back then every feature a today's standalone ECU unit does. The above suggestion of getting a Haltech Elite , is correct, and the most reasonable and beneficial route of action.
There are absolutely hardware differences. Processors and on board memory nowadays are fundamentally different
I can use this for my d16? I just want to put a turbo a run like 230-250 hp reliable
This vs Fueltech Ft450 or Aem V2?
Me driving my tubo d16 with no turn on n my car bc that shit is way to much and I'm not wanting another 3 to 4 months to get a fucking ecu to turn it 🙃
Second comment. Im guessing you dont offer these anymore as the page on your website no longer exists.
How dod u put a standalone ecu on an obd0 crx

I have an Australian 1995 EG4 GLi 3D Civic with a D15B2 engine, ecu is P06 Q00 - will this work for any honda? I'm literally just trying to replace the stock ECU with another one from a wrecker or something, as mine's fried, just need stock replacement to run the car reliably - but of course, there are none, and if there are they're almost impossible to find. Would hugely appreciate tips on this, I've only just walked in the Honda door.
Cheers!
would this require making your own custom harness though?
Flex fuel sensor capability?

I did a lot of Honda chrome tuning a few years ago, I have a bunch of stock ECU's in a box somewhere Ha Ha I Like how Lnk G4X have a plugin for most honda's I've ordered a Link G4X plugin for my 2002 Honda CRV so no wire in, just plug it in and start it up and tune.Link also do a many wire in's as well and cheaper and better in my view. Aftermarket ECU's are so much better than anything that still uses the stock ECU. I like how this guy explains how the old ECU is truly outdated
Building a crx 3/8 asphalt circle track race car.. need to make it as fast as possible If I run single cam engine I only have to weigh 1500# the Bseries cars have to weigh 2300#.. that’s huge weight difference.. what should I do for non vtec single cam horsepower and good tranny that will work for 3/8 circle track. I just wish the 550 had knock sensor input 😕
Exactly. Currently I am moving a customer to move to an Elite 1000 as a minimum, after some shop put in this 550 and it didn't have enough functionality for his build.
According to Haltech’s video Elite 550 vs 750 the 550 doesn’t come with long term fuel trim.
Love this info! I was THIS close to buying an S300 combo a couple nights ago. Waiting to see the rest of the series now before I buy the Haltech+WB02 from you guys! Love the content and education!
As much as I agree with the stuff he said. If you plan on doing your own tuning the software of the s300 and compatible Neptune is a lot more simple. Not to mention if you look around you can definitely find p06s and p28s for sale for $150. $150+$450 for Neptune (or $499 for hondata) is $600. Definitely a better option in my opinion for more simple builds. He does talk about install, and not everyone is capable of that. But if you are capable it's very easy to get one of these to run yourself and do some moderate street tuning on your own. This only applies to more simple builds though.
Any recommendations to tune an h22a4? Looking to get my prelude built up properly before I go boosted
Quick question if anyone knows, whats the ecu that came on the Civic Ef si? just asking because iv still got a spoon chipped one from 13 years ago sat in the attic?

I have a couple p28 chipped ecu’s sitting around., hell I need to sell them and get one of those for my ef build
It looks like the unit does not use a knock sensor. So how does anyone tune without being able to reference engine knock? Im I missing something here?
No reason in buying this at all , it’s not a budget , it’s the same price as a hondata . So u buy a hondata
Same price as Hondata but significantly more advanced. If you’re offered a Lamborghini and a Ford Pinto for $800, you’d opt for the pinto?
A prelude huh i like that
how does this compare with Fueltech? For someone new to the standalone systems.
