When I was looking at trying a turbo honda build, this was what I was going to use since hondata units offered no support for tuning with an automatic on my platform ('04 1.7 civic). I'm glad to see I was pointed in the right direction with my homework since I've never attempted a build, but have wanted to for ages. And before someone roasts me for a slushbox, I have a t-6 spinalcord injury so I literally can't use a clutch 🤷‍♂️

I hope this is a HUGE eye opener for all these “on a budget” Honda builders. Your paying WAY to much for a 26+ year old ecu that is in used condition and can fail on you at any given time and has horrible safety features. Spending a few more extra hundred dollars on a UP TO DATE standalone will be a way better purchase that’ll have more features, have a faster data-logger/safety perimeters, and can be used on on multiple projects that aren’t just Honda’s.

Aftermarket ECU's are so much better than anything that still uses the stock ECU. I like how this guy explains how the old ECU is truly outdated

As much as I agree with the stuff he said. If you plan on doing your own tuning the software of the s300 and compatible Neptune is a lot more simple. Not to mention if you look around you can definitely find p06s and p28s for sale for $150. $150+$450 for Neptune (or $499 for hondata) is $600. Definitely a better option in my opinion for more simple builds. He does talk about install, and not everyone is capable of that. But if you are capable it's very easy to get one of these to run yourself and do some moderate street tuning on your own. This only applies to more simple builds though.

To be clear and accurate on this. Materials used and technology on hardware has not changed since the early 90s. What has changed in regards to hardware is the methods , processes and tooling used for manufacturing computer components, and the eradication of premature failing and or partial malfunction of components, through the substitution of certain materials with others on these. Through these changes ecu board and components have become less prone to failure, minimization of signal leak, of reduction of component properties and loss of interaction between them while at the same time, interaction speed has been enhanced. So in other words the technological basis of ecu board design and manufacture is the same, but it has been refined and corrected at good degree. So if one takes a late 90s early '00 ecu and replaces the right components, such as capacitors, diodes, chipsets, mosfet, resistors, transistors inj and ign drivers, relays, e-prom etc , with contemporary versions of them, then one will have built a new and pretty capable ecu unit, as far as hardware is concerned, where in combination with modern coding reader/writer such as the hondata, one will get the job done on their setup. To sum this up, it is not hardware technology that has changed, as this has only been refined and corrected, as capacitor is still a capacitor, and a diode is still a diode, so is an injector driver i.e, with the difference that nowadays these components are much more compact, and more resilient than two decades back. What has actually changed is the coding, as it has advanced greatly since the 90s, and it has also been spread around. Through the evolution of coding, we can demand more features from the hardware components, and coding has also become a lot easier with todays coding tools than it used to be the previous decades. In the '90s almost all the features if not all that are offered today to the end user, who could be anyone of us, through a standalone ECU unit, were only available to rally teams, or to anyone who wanted to have a very high end standalone product that had 3-4 times the value of a piggy back ecu i.e. One of these companies was Motec. A group N standalone ecu from Motec in 1998 with all its ancillaries, had a cost of around 4K usd, but the specific ECU offered back then every feature a today's standalone ECU unit does. The above suggestion of getting a Haltech Elite , is correct, and the most reasonable and beneficial route of action.

I'm not the first person to have the idea to use a gen 3 LS ECU on a 4 cylinder. Millions of those ECUs out there going for $60 on ebay, plenty of cheap harnesses, MAP sensors all send the same shit (some are powered by 5 volts instead of 12). Does coil on plug, just use the LS coils. Make or buy a trigger wheel for the crank sensor, mount it to crank pulley, then mount the crank sensor; everything else is easy. And there's custom firmware for boost control and wideband O2. AAAND, the software to tune them is free, Universal Patcher; $50 OBDLink SX works with that (VATS/VTD delete is first thing to do). You disable misfire and circuit open error reporting for the 4 unused cylinders. You can choose MAF or speed density only. My video from 12 days ago shows an example of a crank sensor adapter, and I show the sensor working with the ECU at the end. Sensor is from a 4.3 Ecotec. Make a video for that if you're really not a shill.

Microsquirt is perfect for B series and its cheaper and has 2x analog inputs, even the MS3 Pro evo which has massive amounts of IO is about the same price as the 550... as for losing IO on coil on plug setups, what you can do is configure the coils to run in wasted spark mode instead of sequential, so you only use two outputs instead of all four, this is fine for 95% of setups, as is running batch injection ( all 4 injectors on one output) as long as your injector resistance does not draw more than 8A (if so use resistors) so you pick up 3 more outputs that way.... but I totally agree the s300 is a POS by todays standards, the old Honda ECUs are not worth anything more than a good Chrome chip.

A fully build, ready to go, with wiring harness (you do still need to terminate it, just comes with an 8 foot wiring harness and plug for the ecu) setup costs 350. You can buy the kit MS style though and build it yourself for under 100. Works with Tuner Studio as well. Pretty good kit especially for the price.

Then you gotta think about the tuners... Every Honda tuner is hella familiar with s300 whereas haltech might still be unchartered territory to some of these guys

    • @yamahaSHO

Exactly. Currently I am moving a customer to move to an Elite 1000 as a minimum, after some shop put in this 550 and it didn't have enough functionality for his build.

It looks like the unit does not use a knock sensor. So how does anyone tune without being able to reference engine knock? Im I missing something here?

I have an Australian 1995 EG4 GLi 3D Civic with a D15B2 engine, ecu is P06 Q00 - will this work for any honda? I'm literally just trying to replace the stock ECU with another one from a wrecker or something, as mine's fried, just need stock replacement to run the car reliably - but of course, there are none, and if there are they're almost impossible to find. Would hugely appreciate tips on this, I've only just walked in the Honda door.
    Cheers!

Building a crx 3/8 asphalt circle track race car.. need to make it as fast as possible If I run single cam engine I only have to weigh 1500# the Bseries cars have to weigh 2300#.. that’s huge weight difference.. what should I do for non vtec single cam horsepower and good tranny that will work for 3/8 circle track. Any Honda guys with this info would be great.
